In Malaysia, LGBTQ sexual health workshop probe sparks free speech row
Civil society groups are challenging a police investigation into an LGBTQ sexual-health workshop in Malaysia , rejecting claims that it could offend Islam or threaten public order. Advertisement While Malaysia is secular and multicultural, Islam is the state religion, with Islamic authorities empowered to regulate Muslim affairs and enforce religious mores through the sharia court system. Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan on Saturday said the closed-door workshop, which was slated for mid-June but has since been indefinitely postponed, was being investigated under the Penal Code for causing 'disharmony or ill will' on religious grounds – as well as under the Communications and Multimedia Act, a law often used to restrict online expression. Critics called the police action another example of overreach by authorities and warned against the criminalisation of public-health efforts for a marginalised community. Drug hub shut down in Sungai Buloh as police net 50 in sweeping raid
KUALA LUMPUR, June 2 — A targeted police operation in Sungai Buloh has dismantled a local drug distribution point and led to 50 arrests, including a suspected supplier. The Selangor Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (JSJN) conducted 'Ops Sarang' on May 31 after identifying the area as a drug hotspot. According to police, addicts would loiter at the site and wait for drug dealers to arrive with supplies. During the operation, JSJN officers arrested one local man believed to be a supplier who sold drugs directly to users at the scene. Among the 50 arrested were 47 Malaysian men, one Malaysian woman and two foreign men, all aged between 20 and 60. Police seized over 273 grams of heroin, 184 grams of syabu and 20 grams of Erimin 5, with a combined street value estimated at RM15,771. Investigations are ongoing under Section 39B and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, depending on the role of each suspect.

Cops to wrap up probe into gas pipeline blaze
Police said whether heavy machinery was the cause of the gas pipeline blaze could be determined only after the end of the investigation. PETALING JAYA : The police expect to wrap up an investigation into the cause of the April 1 Putra Heights gas pipeline blaze within this month, says Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan. Hussein confirmed that an excavator was near the site of the blast and fire but said whether the heavy machinery was the cause of the incident could only be determined after this investigation is completed. 'We can confirm that one excavator was used for digging works for the laying of sewage pipes right in front of the shoplots that have yet to be completed,' he said, according to Berita Harian. 'We believe that the excavator was buried in the crater after the explosion. Towards the end of the recovery process, we will dig up the area to extract the excavator.' Hussein added that this would only take place after repairs on the Petronas gas pipeline is completed. The massive blaze on April 1 saw flames soaring over 30 metres high with temperatures reaching up to 1,000 degree Celsius. No one died in the incident but 150 victims had to seek treatment at hospitals. The fire destroyed 81 houses, with structural damage exceeding 40%. Another 81 houses were partially damaged and 57 homes were affected but not burned.

New rules coming after 2 tonnes of African catfish released into lake
The fisheries department said about 1,300 African catfish, weighing about 1.5kg each, were released into the Serdang agro exposition lake. (Facebook pic) KUALA LUMPUR : New regulations are to be drafted to control the release of fish, especially invasive species, into public waters. The fisheries department announced the move today following complaints about the release of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) into the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang lake in conjunction with a fishing competition organised by the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi). The fisheries department said several mitigation measures were agreed upon after a site visit and discussions with relevant officials. 'The fishing competition's secretariat will install additional hapa nets, provide bins to collect African catfish caught during the competition, and disseminate awareness material while carrying out fishing activities throughout the programme. 'Mardi will ensure compliance with the installation of nets, open the lake to controlled fishing activities, and coordinate the inventory and disposal of alien fish after the programme concludes,' the fisheries department said. It said about 1,300 African catfish, weighing about 1.5kg each or a total of two tonnes were released into the lake on May 29, without any notification or request for advisory services from the Selangor fisheries office. The department said the public should seek technical advice from the state fisheries office before carrying out any fish release activities into public waters.

Selangor Pakatan rallies behind MB Amirudin Shari as replacement rumours fly
KUALA LUMPUR, May 31 — Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari secured the full support of the Selangor Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders to remain the state menteri besar for the full term. The show of unity comes amid swirling rumours that Investment Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz's entry into PKR could shake up the Selangor government line-up. 'We, representing the component parties of Pakatan Harapan in the state of Selangor, express our full and unwavering support for YAB Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari to remain as the Selangor Menteri Besar until the end of the current term of administration,' DAP's Ng Sze Han, Amanah's Izham Hashim, and PKR's Borhan Aman Shah said in a joint statement this evening. The trio stressed that Selangor's stability depends on continuity in leadership and highlighted projects like the Second Selangor Plan and the state's third port in Pulau Carey. 'Continuity in the state's top leadership will send a positive signal to investors and the business community in Selangor,' they added. The trio further praised Amirudin's role in steering Selangor's economy and supporting Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's Malaysia Madani agenda. 'His experience and leadership have been key to the unity that led to victory and the formation of the Unity Government in Selangor during the recent State Election,' Ng, Izham, and Borhan said. Amirudin had earlier played down the speculation, describing it as 'a long shot' as a by-election would have to be held for a leadership change mid-term. He also said that he had light-heartedly asked Tengku Zafrul to pray for his job security during the latter's pilgrimage. 'We only have about two and a half years left in the term, so there isn't much room to manoeuvre,' Amirudin said. Recommended reading: Tengku Zafrul replacing me? Please pray that I stay as Selangor MB while you're on Haj, Amirudin tells minister
