Adam Selwood: Football community gathers to remember West Coast Eagles favourite at memorial service

The devastated family of Adam Selwood have gathered to mourn the death of one of their four famous football brothers for the second time this year. And Selwood's West Coast premiership teammates have come together for another unwanted reunion. Selwood, an Eagles champion, husband and father-of-two, was farewelled in a private ceremony at the club's Lathlain base on Wednesday afternoon. Some of the biggest names in Australian football gathered for the memorial service — held in the function rooms at Mineral Resources Park — and to support the family, who lost Adam's identical twin brother Troy just three months ago. Selwood, who died suddenly on May 17 aged 41, was an understated but never undervalued member of West Coast's legendary 2006 premiership team. Members of that team attended the service, including captain Chris Judd, Ben Cousins, Daniel Kerr, David Wirrpanda, Beau Waters and Sam Butler. Other long-time teammates, including Josh Kennedy, Matt Priddis, Andrew Gaff and Mark LeCras were also there. Nic Naitanui attended with his wife Brittany Bown. Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir — who was a development coach alongside Selwood at the Eagles — attended alongside current players Jordan Clark and Quinton Narkle. The young Dockers pair were joined by Geelong champion and Joel Selwood's close friend Tom Hawkins to support their former captain. A funeral pamphlet for the event featured a photo of a smiling Selwood in a suit and bow tie, with the words 'in loving memory of Adam Murray Selwood'. Staff members and students from SEDA — where Selwood had worked recently — also attended. One mourner arrived wearing a West Coast scarf. LeCras posted a touching tribute to Instagram on Wednesday morning, featuring a selfie image with Selwood and fellow former teammates Naitanui, Xavier Ellis and Eric Mackenzie. 'If you ever went into battle Sellers would be the first person you would choose to be by your side,' he wrote. 'One of the best blokes I've ever met. Will miss you mate.' Naitanui shared the post to his own account and wrote 'the best human' along with a broken heart emoji. Premiership teammate Michael Braun was also at the memorial and posted a picture of him and Selwood, also with a broken heart emoji. Wednesday's service was a more low-key commemoration than Troy Selwood's funeral, which was held at Geelong's GMHBA Stadium in March. Many of Selwood's 2006 premiership teammates had already gathered in Bunbury in February to farewell Adam Hunter, who kicked the winning goal in that victory over Sydney.

Adam Selwood: Close mates of former AFL player complete HBF Run for a Reason in his honour

A group of Adam Selwood's close friends – including a pair of his West Coast premiership teammates – have finished what he started, running the HBF Run for a Reason. Selwood died suddenly last Saturday, aged 41, just over a week before he was supposed to complete a monster fundraising effort by completing the event's half marathon. Instead his friends shed sweat and tears, running in honour of the Eagles champion through the rain and Perth's CBD streets on Sunday. The group included 2006 premiership stars Drew Banfield and Quinten Lynch, as well as Eagles stars Brad Dalziell, Matt Rosa, Travis Gasper and Sharrod Wellingham. Selwood's close friend Mike Conneely, who was set to run the half-marathon alongside his great mate, shed tears and looked towards the heavens in moving scenes after crossing the finish line. The campaign — which had reached $21,000 before Selwood died — climbed to more than $76,000 late on Sunday, with donations flooding in after the race. Selwood was raising funds for Zero2Hero, a Perth-based youth mental health organisation. The charity's chief executive Ashlee Harrison also ran the 12-kilometre event.

Adam Selwood: Waalitj Marawar (West Coast) Eagles reveal funeral details after sudden death

Waalitj Marawar (West Coast) has revealed premiership player Adam Selwood will be remembered at a private funeral service next week. The service will be hosted at Mineral Resources Park on Wednesday with family, friends and those close to Adam Selwood and the family set to attend. A brief statement from the club read: 'The Selwood Family wish to advise that a private funeral service for Adam will be held with close family and friends. The family ask for privacy and respect as they navigate this difficult time.' 'Following the funeral service, those who knew Adam and the family closely are warmly welcomed to attend a memorial at the West Coast Eagles Football Club to celebrate Adam's life. The relaxed service will include a tribute to Adam from family and friends.' The AFL and WA football worlds were left rocked by the 41-year-old's sudden death last weekend, barely three months after the tragic loss of his twin brother Troy. Selwood was honoured ahead of Waalitj Marawar's clash with the Saints on Sunday, given a moment of silence and a video tribute during the halftime break. Many of the Eagles' players wore black armbands for the former midfielder, who was remembered by teammates as the ultimate team man. Jamie Cripps, the only Eagle to have played with Selwood who took the field on Sunday, saluted his fallen friend after kicking a brilliant goal in the first quarter. Selwood played 187 matches in the blue and gold, including winning the 2006 premiership in a classic over Sydney. The much-loved former player's death has also sparked cries for the AFL to implement a mental health round into the calendar as well as for people to check in on their friends and family.
