From the Mughals' successors to dancing skills, ruling Shiv Sena and NCP lock horns
The rivalry between the ruling coalition allies in Maharashtra, the Nationalist Congress Party led by Ajit Pawar and Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena, seems to be intensifying in the Raigad district after Sena MLAs openly warned NCP state president Sunil Tatkare Sunday that his reverse countdown has begun. A day after, the NCP Monday likened them to the successors of the Mughals in Kaliyuga. Referring to Lok Sabha MP Tatkare's mimicry of Sena minister Bharat Gogawale from Raigad's Mahad Assembly seat, who always carries a handkerchief in his hand, Sena's Karjat MLA Mahendra Thorave said, 'The day you mimicked Bharat Gogawale, your reverse countdown had begun. Just wait and watch how we force you to take the handkerchief on your head'. Thorave, who was speaking at the birthday celebration of Gogawale, even warned that Tatkare's file on the irrigation scam has not yet been closed. Alibaug Sena MLA Mahendra Dalvi, too, targeted Tatkare, saying the upcoming Maharashtra civic body polls will be fought as Mahayuti, but Tatkare will not be a part of it. 'He (Tatkare) has a habit of claiming everything for himself. Those who have no sense of ownership should not even think about guardianship (of Raigad district),' Dalvi said. The Sena and NCP are at loggerheads over the guardian ministership of the Raigad district. While Tatkare's daughter and the state's Women and Child Development Department Minister, Aditi Tatkare. has claimed it, Sena's Gogawale wants the post. Apart from the local political rivalry, this issue is one of the bones of contention between the two parties. Dalvi further claimed, 'We worked for Tatkare in Lok Sabha polls, but he showed his level in the Assembly elections'. On Monday, NCP chief spokesperson Anand Paranjpe hit back with a jibe, especially at Thorave 'There is no doubt that Sunil Tatkare will retain his Raigad Lok Sabha constituency, which has the blessing of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, even in 2029. But let me assure these successors of the Mughals in Kaliyuga that they will soon have to hide their faces with a handkerchief, and avoid the people of Maharashtra,' Paranjpe. 'The Sena minister and two MLAs always act aggressively like the Mughals. Before attacking Tatkare, an MLA like Thorave should realise that the entire world has seen his dance bar skills when he was dancing at the top of the table after his trip to Guwahati,' Paranjape added.

Tej Pratap vows to expose those who conspired to separate him from Tejashwi
Patna, June 1 (UNI) Tej Pratap Yadav, elder son of RJD chief Lalu Prasad, who was recently expelled from the party following a controversial video posted by him with a girl on his Facebook account, vowed on Sunday to expose those who conspired to separate him from his younger brother Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, whom he described as his " Arjun " while he proclaimed himself to be Lord Krishna. Tej Pratap , who earlier in his post on X, expressed his love, affection, and respect for his parents and blamed "Jaychand-like elements for hatching a conspiracy to create a rift in the family, posted a fresh comment, this time for his younger brother Tejashwi Prasad Yadav. In his fresh post, Tej Pratap vowed to expose those who had conspired to separate him from his brother. " My brother is like my Arjun while I am his Krishna and my blessings will always remain with him ", Tej Pratap said adding that those conspired might take his Sena (Army) from him but he would always remain with him, a reference to Tejashwi. Tej Pratap cautioned Tejashwi that Jaychand like elements were present both inside home and outside. He advised Tejashwi to remain always alert from them and take care of parents. Earlier during the day, the elder son of Lalu had made a post on his social media account X, wishing good health and happiness for his parents. He had also cautioned them that "Jaychand " like elements were active to create a rift in the family. He had no desire but only to get blessings from his parents. Tej Pratap had posted a video on his Facebook account on May 25, with a girl Anushka Yadav, and claimed that he had been in a relationship with her for the last twelve years. It had triggered a major controversy in the family and also in the political circle as Tej Pratap was married to Aishwarya Rai, granddaughter of former Bihar Chief Minister Daroga Prasad Rai, in 2018. Their divorce petition is still pending in the court. Aishwarya had alleged that Lalu and all his family members were responsible for the gross injustice meted out to her. She was beaten, starved, and humiliated by family members of Lalu after her marriage, she had alleged. Leaders of all political parties had also criticised Lalu, saying his family members had no respect for dignity and sanctity of women. The slogan of social justice of Lalu was hollow, they had alleged. Lalu had expelled Tej Pratap for six years and also disowned him from the family after he posted the controversial video on his Facebook account. UNI KKS BD

Sena (UBT), MNS workers in joint protest in Dombivali
Saurabha Kulshreshtha MUMBAI: A protest over an incomplete bridge in Dombivali has assumed importance well beyond the inconvenience it's been causing – it's being seen as a possible bridge between two political rivals, whose possible rapprochement could trigger a political realignment ahead of upcoming local elections. The agitation over the bridge at Palava township on the Shil-Kalyan Road comes amid speculation of a reunion of the Thackeray cousins – and an alliance of the Shiv Sena (UBT) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) led by them. Local leaders of the two parties joined forces on Saturday, taking on a common political foe – the Shiv Sena. The development, although local in scope, left political parties and observers wondering whether the Sena (UBT) and MNS might reconcile, at least at the grassroots, given that party workers are keen on a thaw in relations. The bridge has been under construction for seven years, leading to traffic congestion in the area. Local leaders of the Sena led by deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde had promised to make sure that the work would be completed by May 31 but failed to keep their promise. Saturday's protest, at around 11 am on site, was led by Deepesh Mhatre, Dombivali chief of the Sena (UBT). Not long after, Raju Patil, local MNS leader and former MLA from the Kalyan rural constituency, turned up with party workers. Patil had lost the assembly election in November 2024 to Rajesh More of the Sena. The agitation turned into a joint protest by the Sena (UBT) and MNS, which have been at loggerheads till recently. Speaking at the protest, both Mhatre and Patil slammed Sena leaders for offering hollow assurances regarding the bridge. Vaishali Darekar, chief of the Sena (UBT)'s women's wing, was also present during the protest. The battle for dominance in the region assumes significance in view of the civic elections due later this year. Mhatre and Patil are both struggling to make an impact in the Kalyan-Dombivali region even as the Sena led by Eknath Shinde, particularly party MP Shrikant Shinde, have adopted an aggressive approach against these two leaders. The united front by the Sena (UBT) and MNS on Saturday is seen as a possible alliance of these two parties, at least in the Kalyan-Dombivali Municipal Corporation elections. Mhatre said every 'Marathi monoos' wants to see the Thackeray cousins working together but they were not at liberty to take a decision on this. 'Both parties, and their leaders and party workers, are united on the issues of the common man. We have come out on the street to raise our voice on the suffering of the common man. This bridge has remained incomplete for seven years. People and vehicle owners daily suffer due to the traffic jams,' said Mhatre. Patil said: 'There is speculation about an alliance between the two parties but a decision will be taken at the party leadership level. But here, in Kalyan-Dombivali, we came together to raise our voices on a people's issue. This bridge at Palava is a long-pending issue and people are suffering as it is still incomplete.' Last month, in a podcast with filmmaker Mahesh Manjrekar, MNS chief Raj Thackeray had said he was willing to set aside differences with his cousin and Sena ((UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray in the interests of the 'Marathi manoos'. Within hours, Uddhav responded, saying he too would set aside petty fights for Marathi pride but insisted that his cousin stop hobnobbing with Mahayuti leaders. While senior Sena (UBT) leaders have been speaking in favour of a reunion of the estranged cousins, there has been no further word on the issue from the Thackeray cousins themselves.

BJP names Ravindra Chavan as state unit chief, with an eye on MMR
MUMBAI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has named its Dombivli legislator and a Maratha leader Ravindra Chavan as the state president, seeking to hold sway on the crucial Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The party's present state president and revenue minister Chandrashekhar Banwakule made this announcement at a meeting in Ahilyanagar recently, although union home minister Amit Shah had also indicated the move in Nanded last week. 'A formal announcement is expected from the party's leadership in next few days,' Bawankule said at the function in Ahilyanagar. MMR is crucial to BJP's expansion plans for Maharashtra. The area is the state's biggest urban conglomeration with eight municipal corporations. It has about 67 of 288 assembly seats, and 11 of 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra. For years, the area was dominated by Shiv Sena; and now a few years after the split in the party, BJP is looking to establish its control here. In last year's assembly election, BJP won 30 out of 67 seats in MMR while Shiv Sena won 17 and NCP 3, which adds up to 50 seats in the region for the ruling Mahayuti. As part of its expansion plans, BJP is aiming to win most of the municipal corporations, including Mumbai. 'It would mean not just reducing Uddhav Thackeray's political clout further but also keeping Shinde-led Shiv Sena in check,' a senior minister from the party told HT. Chavan, a four-time legislator from Dombivli is expected to play a significant role in propelling the party's agenda. 'Chavan is an urban leader who has a good understanding of ground level politics in the Konkan belt, especially Thane, Raigad and Palghar districts. The party is in direct contest with both factions of Sena in this region. Chavan's aggressive approach will be handy while combating both Sena factions,' said a BJP minister. Shinde, who played a significant role in maintaining an undivided Sena's hold over the MMR, is keen to occupy the erstwhile Shiv Sena's space. He is backed by a strong control over Thane district and is also recruiting aggressively, poaching heavily from Sena (UBT). The next few months in the run up to the civic polls will see an intense political battle not just between the ruling Mahayuti and Opposition parties but also within the ruling alliance. Chavan's major opportunity in his political career so far may also turn out to be a test of his skill as a leader. Chavan was not available for a comment to HT.

‘Ignore Me…': Kunal Kamra Reacts After Devendra Fadnavis Calls His Shinde Remark 'Worthless'
Last Updated: Kunal Kamra was replying to Devendra Fadnavis, who earlier today, called the former "worthless" and suggested that he should be "politically ignored." Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra, who triggered a massive controversy with his recent ' gaddar ' remark directed at Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, has urged Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to 'ignore" him. He further challenged Fadnavis saying that he would be organising his stand-up comedy shows in Maharashtra's Thane, New Mumbai, Mumbai, Pune, Nasik, Nagpur, Aurangabad later in October this year, so if he along with Eknath Shinde could 'ignore" him during the shows. Kamra was replying to Fadnavis, who earlier today, called the former 'worthless" and suggested that he should be 'politically ignored." Speaking at an event organised by The Indian Express, Fadnavis remarked, 'I believe politically ignoring such people would be wiser. Inki Aukat Nahi Hai (They are not worth it), by reacting, you only elevate their stature. There's no need to give them that importance… Sometimes, especially in our party and our ally Shiv Sena, we are emotional people. We are not practical politicians. Our emotions often lead to reactions. Because of these reactions, he (Kunal Kamra) gained more attention. Otherwise, not even four people would listen to him." Later, responded sarcastically to Fadnavis' statement on social media. Sharing a clip of the Chief Minister's remarks, he said, 'Hello Devendra Fadnavis, you're right. Politically, it's better to ignore me. I have no 'aukat' & only 4 people watch my show. Please, can I be ignored? In October, I was planning shows in Thane, Navi Mumbai, Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, Nagpur, and Aurangabad. Please coordinate with Mr Shinde & his Sena if I can be ignored." Kunal Kamra Row Kamra stoked a row after giving a spin-off to a popular Hindi song in which he took a veiled dig at Shinde, calling him a 'gaddar" (traitor). He allegedly referred to the 2022 Maharashtra political crisis in which Shinde led the collapse of Uddhav Thackeray's state government. Recorded in February, the programme called 'Naya Bharat' was uploaded on Kamra's YouTube channel on March 23, drawing strong reactions from the Shiv Sainiks. Shiv Sena leaders condemned his remarks, demanding an unconditional apology from him. The controversy escalated into violence when Yuva Sena, the youth wing of Shinde's Shiv Sena, vandalised the Habitat comedy venue where the show was filmed. Despite having multiple clashes with the BJP-led Centre in the past, the comedian has refused to apologise for his remark but had expressed willingness to cooperate with the police. Three separate cases were filed against the stand-up comedian at Khar police station, with one complaint lodged by the Mayor of Jalgaon city and the other two by a hotelier and a businessman from Nashik, according to the Mumbai Police. For the unversed, Kamra, in 2019 and 2024, contributed to the crowdfunding drive launched by Kanhaiya Kumar, who was then a Congress candidate from northeast Delhi, against the Bharatiya Janata Party's Manoj Tiwari.
