Baseball: Senga pitches Mets past Rockies for 6th win
NEW YORK (Kyodo) -- New York Mets pitcher Kodai Senga picked up his sixth win of the season after working 6-1/3 solid innings in an 8-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Saturday. Senga (6-3) held the struggling Rockies to two runs and two hits while striking out seven and walking two in a 92-pitch outing at Citi Field. After giving up a solo home run to Ezequiel Tovar with one out in the top of the first inning, the Japanese right-hander, known for his "ghost forkball," settled in to retire 17 straight batters. In the seventh, Senga walked two of the first three batters and allowed an RBI single to Thairo Estrada that trimmed the Mets' lead to 7-2. Senga now leads the National League with a 1.60 ERA. Brett Baty hit a bases-loaded triple in the first and Brandon Nimmo added a two-run homer in the fourth for the Mets. At Dodger Stadium, Shohei Ohtani went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles in the Los Angeles Dodgers' 18-2 rout of the New York Yankees. At Wrigley Field, Chicago Cubs designated hitter Seiya Suzuki extended his hitting streak to a career-high 11 games with an eighth-inning RBI double in a 2-0 win over the Cincinnati Reds.

Kodai Senga shakes off another early homer in latest strong Mets start
Access the Mets beat like never before Join Post Sports+ for exciting subscriber-only features, including real-time texting with Mike Puma about the inside buzz on the Mets. Try it free For the second outing in a row, Kodai Senga had a home run hit off him in the first inning to put the Mets in an early hole. Last Sunday, it was Shohei Ohtani of the reigning champion Dodgers. On Saturday, it was Ezequiel Tovar of the historically bad Rockies and it was the first home run that came off Senga's famous forkball. Still, Senga didn't waver. After the home run, he went on to retire 17 straight batters, striking out seven while allowing two hits and two earned runs across 6 ¹/₃ innings for his sixth win of the season in the Mets' 8-2 victory over Colorado. 3 Kodai Senga reacts during the Mets' 8-2 win over the Rockies on May 31, 2025. Corey Sipkin for the NY Post 'Ideally, I'd like to get through without giving up any runs,' Senga said through an interpreter after the game. 'But I think it's just a result of throwing the pitches where I know that they're going to hit it, and it just happens to be that way. … I think the most important thing was that I was able to throw strikes to get ahead.' It was the first time Senga allowed two or fewer hits in an outing of at least 6 ¹/₃ innings since August 19, 2023. 3 Kodai Senga reacts after allowing a home run during the Mets' win over the Rockies. Robert Sabo for the NY Post CHECK OUT THE LATEST MLB STANDINGS AND METS STATS He also has allowed three earned runs or less in 28 consecutive starts, which is the fourth-longest such streak in Mets' history. 'I thought he was amazing,' Brett Baty said. 'I was saying out there that I just think his resilience this year has been incredible. He gave up a homer in the Dodgers start in the first inning, and then he gave up a homer today in the first inning. After that, came back out and pitched strikes and just mowed everybody down. It was cool.' 3 Kodai Senga walks off the field to a standing ovation after exiting the game in the seventh inning of the Mets' win. Robert Sabo for the NY Post His consistency has earned him the third-best ERA in the league (1.60) behind the Royals' Kris Bubic (1.45) and the Rangers' Nathan Eovaldi (1.56). But the righty isn't concerned with that. He ruled it was likely from fatigue. 'I don't really think about my stats. There's a lot more season. A lot more games left in the season. In terms of my innings pitched, give it a few days and I'm probably no longer on the leaderboard. So, we have a lot more left to do. I want to finish my outings on a strong note, unlike today. So, we have a lot of work to do and a lot of season.'

Baseball: Ohtani homers but Senga gets win as Mets beat Dodgers
KYODO NEWS - 10 hours ago - 15:19 | Sports, All Kodai Senga surrendered a leadoff home run to superstar countryman Shohei Ohtani before steadying the ship and earning his fifth win as the New York Mets saw off the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-1 on Sunday. Ohtani tied for the Major League Baseball lead with his 18th home run when he launched Senga's 1-0 fastball 411 feet to the upper deck beyond right center field in the opening frame at Citi Field. Senga (5-3) was soon able to work with a lead, however, thanks to Pete Alonso's two-run homer with two out in the bottom of the inning. The Japanese right-hander left the game after 5-1/3 innings in which he struck out five while scattering five hits and four walks. "Ohtani is a great player. It wasn't about changing my mindset (after the home run), I just kept thinking about doing my job," said Senga, whose Mets won two of three in their series against the World Series champion Dodgers. In practice before the game, Ohtani made his much-anticipated mound return against hitters for the first time since undergoing his second major elbow surgery in September 2023. The two-way star threw 22 pitches across five simulated plate appearances, striking out two and allowing only one hittable ball. "I knew my speed would go up with a batter in the box," he said. "Since it was my first time, I tried not to throw at 96 or 97 miles per hour, but it was getting up there towards the end. I think I can keep things in check a little more." At Cincinnati's Great American Ball Park, Chicago Cubs designated hitter Seiya Suzuki crushed his 14th home run, a tie-breaking three-run blast, in an 11-8 comeback win over the Cincinnati Reds. Suzuki capped off a 3-for-4 outing when he broke an 8-8 deadlock in the top of the eighth with his big fly to left field off right-hander Luis Mey, taking his RBI total to 49 this season.
