Salah claims new record with latest Premier League award

Mohamed Salah has been named as the Premier League Player of the Month for a record-equalling seventh time. Salah has moved level with Harry Kane and Sergio Aguero as a seven-time winner of the monthly award, following a brilliant February for Liverpool. The Egyptian international scored six goals and provided four assists in the month, to extend his lead as the Premier Leagues's leading scorer and assist provider this season. Advertisement Salah saw off competition from Everton forward Beto, Crystal Palace's Jean-Philippe Mateta, Brighton winger Yankuba Minteh, Tottenham full-back Djed Spence and Liverpool teammate Dominik Szoboszlai to take the prize. The 32-year-old's award is his second of the campaign, having also picked up November's accolade. He previously won the Premier League Player of the Month award in November 2017, February 2018, March 2018, October 2021, and October 2023. His record-equalling seventh award continues a season of milestones for Salah. His 44 goal involvements in the Premier League this season are a joint-record in a 38-game season, with nine games still to go. Last week, he netted his 183rd and 184th goals in the Premier League to move up to joint-fifth in the all-time scorers list. Level with Sergio Aguero, the duo are the highest-scoring overseas players in the league's history. Sergio seeks power surge in new ride with Iron Horses

Spring to his feet up north: Sergio Aguero jogging during a training session in Thailand. — Kanchanaburi Power PETALING JAYA: Sergio Aguero is set to embrace a new challenge with gusto after signing for the newly-promoted Thai League One side, Kanchanaburi Power. Known affectionately as the Iron Horses, the Western province club have secured the services of Aguero, the seasoned national player from Pahang to strengthen their attack for the upcoming season. Taking advantage of the league's rule allowing teams to sign an unlimited number of South-East Asian players this season, Kanchanaburi have assembled a diverse squad. Alongside Aguero, the team feature Singaporeans Anumanthan Kumar (midfielder) and Ryhan Stewart (defender), as well as Filipino midfielder John Lucero. The 31-year-old playmaker, who can also operate as a striker, drew interest from Brunei, Kelantan, and several Indonesian teams. However, when he was approached by Kanchanaburi, he recognised an opportunity too compelling to pass up. 'It was not an easy decision because I was seeking a new challenge and had several offers during the off-season,' Aguero stated. The naturalised Argentinian, who hails from La Rioja, added: 'I have been with Pahang for a while, and when they decided not to compete in the Super League, I knew it was time for a change. ''The Thai League is highly competitive, filled with quality clubs, and I can't wait to test myself against the best.' Having trained with the club for a week, Aguero is now laser-focused on reaching peak fitness. He emphasises the importance of conditioning, especially given the club's strategic signings to bolster their squad. 'I have seen the new signings – there's a nice mix of local and foreign players. We are working hard to build chemistry, and I know we must perform at our very best consistently to succeed in this league. ''The competition is tough, but we're committed to giving it our all.' Looking ahead to the season, Aguero shared his personal and team goals. 'My primary aim is to give my all for the team and help us secure a strong position in the league. On a personal level, I want to elevate my game. Age is just a number - at 31, I believe there's always room for growth and improvement. 'I also want to do this for Harimau Malaya. I aspire to be part of the national team again soon. The midfield is full of talented players, but I believe in my ability. I will continue to work hard, stay determined, and keep pushing forward.'

Pahang legend Jamal admits decision to withdraw from Super League was inevitable

Bad omen: Pahang's Sergio Aguero is shown the red card during the Malaysia Cup final against Johor Darul Ta'zim on April 26. Pahang went on to lose 2-1. PETALING JAYA: The absence of several once dominant clubs from the Malaysian football scene has raised alarm bells, with the latest blow being the withdrawal of 2004 Super League champions Pahang from the 2025–2026 season. The Malaysian Football League (MFL) yesterday officially confirmed that last season's Malaysian Cup finalists had submitted an official letter dated June 16 to notify the governing body of their decision to withdraw from all competitions for the 2025–26 season. Former Pahang legend Datuk Jamal Nasir admitted the decision was disappointing but believes the management had no choice, especially given the club's past issues with unpaid salaries. He also urged fans not to point fingers at the management, who were forced to make this difficult decision. 'It's certainly a letdown for Pahang football fans. This club used to be among the best in the Super League and even reached the Malaysia Cup final. Now they won't be part of the league next season,' said Jamal. 'I'm saddened too, but I believe there are valid reasons behind the decision. The management may have been left with no alternative. 'I hope the fans will be patient. There may be several matters the club need to resolve first, even though they were granted the national licence. I believe pulling out of the league is the right decision for now. 'So to me, there's nothing wrong with Pahang taking a step back to regroup, make proper preparations and fix what needs to be fixed. ''Hopefully, they'll come back stronger in the future. Whatever it is, I remain positive about the decision,' he added. Speculation over Pahang's withdrawal had been swirling since March and gained further traction when club owner Tengku Abdul Rahman hinted at stepping away from managing the team next season, shortly after the Malaysian Cup final against Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) on April 27. Earlier, Kedah and Perak also had to take the same route, pulling out of the Malaysian League due to worsening financial troubles. Both clubs are still dealing with salary arrears, with many players yet to be paid. With Pahang's withdrawal, only 13 teams have confirmed their participation in the 2025–2026 Malaysian League season. They are Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT), Selangor, Penang, Kuching City, Sabah, Terengganu, Negri Sembilan, Kelantan, Kuala Lumpur, Police and DPMM (Brunei), along with two clubs from the AFL A1, Malacca and Immigration.

Man City players at risk of the chop stood up to be counted in statement win over Juventus... here's who complicated Pep Guardiola's transfer plans, writes JACK GAUGHAN

Sergio Aguero was knocking about in Orlando, watching some of the lads he used to line up alongside and the big man who ultimately replaced his goals and more. Wristband on, VIP treatment from a veranda. As a man of his standing deserves, of course. Aguero met up with some Manchester City staff as they hammered Juventus and will have looked on with envy at the fluidity with which Pep Guardiola 's fresher side are now operating. Chances aplenty for a poacher like him and City appear that bit freer at the Club World Cup. Guardiola could barely contain delight at the improvements in a short space of time. While City did their job in hunting down a Champions League spot at the end of the season, they weren't doing so with this sort of panache and, while Juventus only finished fourth in Serie A, a 5-2 victory was a bit of a statement. 'A statement for ourselves,' Guardiola said. 'I had the feeling the players felt that we can compete in the way we did the last decade and create incredible things. We have to re-find ourselves again. 'That's the most important thing in this period here. Of course we want to win the World Cup but (also) connect ourselves again like we were.' Seeing him excitedly spin to celebrate with new No 2 Pep Lijnders when Erling Haaland clumsily bundled in a slick move was a major indicator of how City's manager is viewing the improvement. He is noticing those old patterns that are being drilled during lengthy sessions in the heat and how Savinho dropped deep, allowing Tijjani Reijnders to power into space, was pure City. Reijnders played in Matheus Nunes, ahead of both of his central midfielder and winger. Ball across, Haaland stumbles over the line. This is manipulation of space that we became so accustomed to with City but that had recently vanished. Nunes and Savinho. Two of those heavily criticised last year. Savinho for his output, or lack thereof, and Nunes for mistakes at right back. Both, you'd say from the outside looking in, who could be under threat were City to offload players to make sure nobody is left out of the 25-man Champions League squad. A bit of competition won't hurt Savinho, with Oscar Bobb returning and the signing of Rayan Cherki. On Thursday, he made sure to answer some questions about his development since joining from Troyes, via a loan at Girona. More direct, good connection with his right back. A nice, simple assist for Phil Foden. A little extra bite. Guardiola made allowances for the Brazilian during his first year, with the adaptation to English football, and had been impressed with his start amid some niggling injuries, before form fell away. Nunes did a job for the team in reverting to right back but has continued there in America. There are reservations about his defensive capabilities, and Guardiola knows the Portuguese's limitations, although he did insist that he'd made a 'step up' in recent weeks. The way he spoke was that Nunes can be coached into a strong right back but not that he is close right now. 'We need him a lot and I desperately want him to be with us,' Guardiola said, suggesting conversations have taken place over his future. 'There is a lot of love and he's an incredibly funny guy.' It does further beg the question of who actually leaves eventually when this tournament has been and gone. City's management team will be buoyed by certain members of this squad sticking their hand up for recognition, although it might make the summer that bit harder.
