Snyman: Blitzboks' true colours glittered in LA

The SA Sevens team went unbeaten in the series finale, winning all five matches in Los Angeles. Blitzboks coach Philip Snyman said his 'team delivered an amazing performance' in winning the Sevens World Championship in Los Angeles on Sunday. After an up-and-down season in which the SA Sevens team won only one tournament — their home event in Cape Town in December — they put it all together in the season finale to bag the biggest trophy of the season. Snyman's men went unbeaten in LA, winning all three pool games and then also defeated New Zealand and Spain in the semi-finals and final respectively to win the title. 'Players deserve so much credit' 'This team delivered an amazing performance over the weekend,' said Snyman. 'The players deserve so much credit for the way they played here in Los Angeles. We had some good parts and some bad parts to our season, but this weekend we got it all together and that is a very satisfying feeling. 'Any coach will tell you that your plan can only be as good as the buy-in from the players and then their execution thereof. This weekend it all came together. 'They really stuck to our plan, but also importantly, played the moments when it was there to exploit. They did some exceptional things on the field during this tournament and all the credit must go to them. 'Some of those moments of brilliance by the players in the final made this a special win.' Potential of squad Snyman said the weekend proved that the Blitzboks are back to where they should be: 'This performance was proof of the potential of this squad. The players executed their roles so well, there was a common belief in what is possible and how to achieve that and the result is there for them to enjoy now. 'This performance finally completes the puzzle for us, and what a beautiful picture we got. This was the true colours of Springbok Sevens and I cannot be prouder of what it represented and displayed this weekend.' The Blitzbok coach also reflected on the big moments of the weekend and said they 'were up for it'. 'Our defence was great, the attack worked so well, while there was this hunger in each player to use this tournament to make up for the disappointing ones we had along the way,' he said. Consistency Blitzbok captain Selvyn Davids said the effort during the weekend made him very proud. 'The guys left everything out there on the field, we gave it our all,' he said. 'That is just an amazing feeling. We fought for each other, and we fought for the badge and knowing that we achieved that was already a win for me.' The one lesson learned from this season is that consistency is key to everything, according to Davids: 'The consistency we lacked during the year prevented us from reaching our full potential as a team. This tournament we managed to maintain the same level of excellence and that proved gold for us.' The squad will arrive back in South Africa on Tuesday.

Rugby Sevens: Black Ferns Sevens win Sevens World Championship in style

The Black Ferns Sevens have capped off a near-perfect season by winning the Sevens World Championship in Los Angeles. For the fifth time in 2025, New Zealand and Australia clashed in a final, with the Black Ferns Sevens winning their fifth title of the season and in style with a 31-7 victory. The Black Ferns Sevens had already claimed the World Sevens Series title after winning four of the six series events. Jorja Miller opened the scoring in LA with an 80m effort, her 29th try of the season. New Zealand then turned defence into attack after keeping Australia inside their own 22 before a Sarah Hirini steal set up Michaela Brake for a 12-0 lead 90 seconds before the break. Australia answered back after halftime with Mackenzie Davis sprinting clear off the back of a ruck to close it to 12-7 but that's as close as they got.

In the men's competition, the Fijians were a major disappointment, losing all their three matches on the day. They were beaten 17-12 by New Zealand in their opening game on Sunday morning. The Fijians also lost their second game, pipped at the final whistle by Australia 15-14 before they then slumped to their third defeat, going down 24-12 to Spain. That meant the Singapore 7s champions have not made the Cup semifinals, where New Zealand will now feature against South Africa. The semifinals are scheduled for Monday morning. The other semifinal in the men's competition will see Argentina take on Spain. Meanwhile, the Fijiana women's sevens team had one win to their name but they also lost out of a spot in the final four following two losses. Fijiana were dumped 26-5 by Australia in their first game, but defeated France 26-22 in their second game, with a chance to get into the top four if they won their last game against the US. However, the Americans had too much power in the end to claim victory and shut Fiji out, running to a 31-19 win in the deciding pool match. The women's semifinal will feature Australia against Canada while New Zealand will battle the US. In the Play-off Championship, Samoa needs to win their last pool match on Monday morning to secure their semifinal spot. The side defeated Kenya 19-12 in their opening pool game but lost to the US 25-19. They will meet Portugal in their decider on Monday morning, a win could see them into the last four. If the Samoans win a top-four spot they will return to the core World Sevens series in the 2025/2026 series, which will kick off in Dubai at the end of the year.
