They also have a passionate wider fanbase scattered across the country, who display their famous striped shirts as a proud symbol of identity. But their big-club status has rarely been matched by on-field success, with several stints in the second tier testing the patience of long-suffering supporters. However, Betis are the better supported of the two clubs, as Seville native Javier Gancedo explained: 'Within the city, there's an even split between Betis and Sevilla fans. 'But across the rest of Andalusia, nobody else supports Sevilla because they are the traditional team of the city's ruling class who controlled everything. 'On the other hand, Betis have always been for the working class. And their green and white colours are the same as the Andalusia flag, showing how they represent people from all over the region.' Andalusia is culturally unique — tapas and flamenco, hot sun and hotter emotions, fed by strong traces of Muslim and Gypsy cultures. That mix comes together — expressive and creative football is a given, best embodied in the club's greatest ever player, Joaquin. When he retired two years ago after making 528 appearances, the winger said: 'We Beticos are different. It's a way of life united by passion and love... a completely different way of seeing football.' Swap the fog on the Tyne for scorching sunshine, and exchange Geordie grit for Spanish flair. But the intensity of support — and the long wait for silverware — is the same. And if the comparison between Newcastle and Betis continues with a trophy, the celebrations will be just as memorable. 5 Ex-Real Madrid man Isco is their key player Credit: Getty Advertisement

Antony scores ANOTHER scorcher to give Real Betis a dramatic last-gasp win - after club legend joked he would KIDNAP £86m Man United flop

Manchester United loanee Antony scored a stunning last minute winner for Real Betis as they beat Espanyol 2-1 in La Liga. The Brazilian cut in from the right wing before curling the ball into the top left corner from the edge of the box, sending Betis's away fans into raptures. The 25-year-old, who endured a miserable spell at Old Trafford after joining for £86million in 2022, has been rejuventated since his loan spell in Spain. He has now scored seven times and claimed four assists since joining the Seville-based outfit in January. His performances have earned rave reviews and Betis fans are desperate for him to extend his stay at the club. Club legend Joaquin even joked that he would kidnap Antony to keep him at the club, after the former Ajax star scored a sensational half-volley to give Betis victory over Fiorentina in the first leg of their Europa Conference League semi-final. Speaking after Betis' victory, Joaquin said: 'I'll provide the car if he has to be kidnapped, but let him stay no matter what. 'This is the moment to enjoy. I think important moments will come, and we'll see later.' Real Betis's win means they are now just one point behind Villareal, who sit in La Liga's fifth and final Champions League qualification spot, with just four fixtures remaining this campaign. Manuel Pellegrini's side travel to Fiorentina for their Europa Conference League second leg on Thursday. Meanwhile, Manchester United remain in 15th, two points above 17th placed West Ham, after their 4-3 loss to Brentford on Sunday. Betis are interested in another loan move for Antony, while Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid may attempt to sign him permanently, according to El Chiringuito, who report that United are demanding between £34m and £42m for his services. Although he has two years remaining on his contract at United it remains to be seen if there is any chance of Antony having a future at the club. The winger struggled for consistency in Manchester and scored just 12 goals in 96 games. Real Betis legend Joaquin joked he would kidnap Antony to keep him at the Spanish club In an interview with ESPN Brasil, the winger said his 'personal life' affected his displays for the Red Devils. He admitted his performances were far below the standard that had seen him secure the Manchester move and be selected as part of the Brazil squad for the 2022 World Cup. 'I think that, apart from my football life, my personal life got in the way a lot, because of the things I went through, the moments I lived there,' said Antony. 'Like it or not, it's affected me a lot. So, of course, I know the potential I have. 'It's not for nothing that I went to a World Cup, it's not for nothing that I was sold to United for a lot of money, and I know my worth. 'People look at the moment, but they don't look at the bigger picture, what happens to bring things about.

‘Advanced negotiations': INEOS now haggling to recuperate as high a fee as possible for £200k-a-week Man Utd star

'Advanced negotiations': INEOS now haggling to recuperate as high a fee as possible for £200k-a-week Man Utd star 'Advanced negotiations': INEOS now haggling to recuperate as high a fee as possible for £200k-a-week Man Utd star INEOS have to be ruthless when it comes to sanctioning player exits this summer – or else risk keeping hold of deadwood players who are stealing a living. Antony is one Manchester United star likely to be offloaded when the window opens due to the interest he's receiving from his current club, Real Betis. Advertisement There is an off-chance Ruben Amorim would look to bring the winger back to Old Trafford and see if he can replicate such revived form in a red shirt. However, after two failed seasons in M16, it's improbable United would give him another season to prove himself. Since making the move to Spain in January, Antony has become something of a player reborn. He left United without making a single Premier League start whilst scoring only one goal – from the penalty spot no less – in a 7-0 Carabao Cup win over Barnsley in the third round. He made nine appearances under Amorim (two as a starter) before the boss signed off on his temporary departure, although no buy clause was included in the terms. Betis kickstart attempts to sign Antony Antony has revived his stagnant form over in Spain. (Photo by) Now 15 matches into his Betis tenure, Antony has notched four goals and four assists in all competitions. Advertisement The Seville-based outfit ended a seven-game unbeaten streak in La Liga when falling to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Villarreal over the weekend, but do have the chance to book their spot in the semi-finals of the Europa Conference League if they can defend their 2-0 advantage in the second leg vs Jagiellonia Bialystok this Thursday. They're also sixth-placed in the league and therefore well in the mix to claim a European place come the end of the season, which will coincide with the Brazilian's loan coming to an end. Two weeks ago, Isco joked that Betis' fans and players should consider crowdfunding to sign Antony permanently upon the culmination of 2024/2025, seemingly acknowledging the fact that any transfer fee United set is likely to be outside of the Betis' price range. That hasn't stopped them from giving it ago, though. Journalist Urial Lugt claims the two sides are in 'advanced negotiations' to try and hash out a deal that sees Antony join Los Verderones long-term. Advertisement Presumably, the 25-year-old would also have to reduce his £200,000-a-week wages that he's been earning since putting pen to paper on a five-year United deal in 2022.
