Ishaan Khatter recalls getting fame for simply being Shahid Kapoor's brother: ‘I never tried to shine in his light'

Bollywood actor Shahid Kapoor began his journey as a background dancer and later rose to fame with his film Ishq Vishk. The actor had established himself as a star by the time his brother Ishaan Khatter entered the industry. Now, in an interview with Zoom, Ishaan opened up about being recognised as Shahid's brother. (Also Read: Ishaan Khatter calls Tabu 'naughty', says intimate scenes with her happened seamlessly in A Suitable Boy) He recalled being photographed for the first time during Shahid's wedding to Mira Rajput and said, "When my brother got married was the first time that there was media and paparazzi. That whole thing had started to blow up, along with social media. I was photographed, and after that, I was spotted and recognised at a few places. At least in my case, it wasn't by design. But obviously, you're known as someone's brother." He further explained that although Shahid's parents, Pankaj Kapur and Neelima Azeem, were working professionals and actors, neither of them were stars. However, he had an elder brother who was a star. He added that he is proud of Shahid and said, "I had an elder brother whose act to follow would be… like he's a movie star! But I never tried to shine in his light because everyone wants to be known for their own personality, right? If people photograph me and know me because I'm his brother, that's obvious, because I haven't done anything they know me for. So my focus was just to work. I have to tread my own path and make my own life. I'm totally fine with it being slow and steady. I'm in no rush to show people, 'This is who I am.' I'd much rather show it with my work." For the uninitiated, Ishaan and Shahid are half-brothers. Neelima Azeem married actor Pankaj Kapur in 1979 and welcomed their son, Shahid Kapoor, in 1981. However, their marriage did not last long, and they parted ways. In 1988, Pankaj married Supriya Pathak, and in 1990, Neelima married Rajesh Khattar. She welcomed her son, Ishaan, in 1995. Shahid was last seen in the film Deva, which failed to perform well at the box office. He will next be seen in Vishal Bhardwaj's action thriller Arjun Ustara, which also stars Triptii Dimri, Nana Patekar and Randeep Hooda in key roles. The release date of the film is yet to be announced. Ishaan, on the other hand, has the premiere of his film Homebound at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. Helmed by Neeraj Ghaywan and backed by Karan Johar, the film also stars Janhvi Kapoor and Vishal Jethwa. It received a nine-minute standing ovation at the festival.

Why does Ishaan Khatter feel it's not easy to watch Shahid Kapoor's 'red flag' character in Kabir Singh?

Shahid Kapoor's 2019 film Kabir Singh, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, sparked widespread debate over its portrayal of the lead character and concerns about whether it romanticized aggression towards women. However, Shahid's younger brother, Ishaan Khatter, recently shared that it wasn't easy to watch, let alone empathize with, his brother's intense performance, even with all the character's red flags clearly shown. Ishaan Khatter on Shahid Kapoor's Kabir Singh In an interview with Zoom, Ishaan Khatter reflected on the discourse surrounding Kabir Singh. He remarked that when people express strong opinions, it often stems from a place of passion, especially given how emotionally invested Indian audiences are in cinema. Ishaan acknowledged that the societal conversations sparked by the film were significant and necessary. However, he clarified that he wasn't justifying or excusing the film's content by suggesting it was made with the intention to provoke those discussions. He further noted that, both as a brother and as a fellow actor, he appreciated the complexity Shahid Kapoor brought to the role. According to Ishaan, portraying a character like Kabir Singh, one that's difficult to watch or sympathize with, is no easy task. Despite the character's many red flags, he pointed out that the film clearly resonated with a wide audience, many of whom deeply connected with the performance and the story. Ishaan Khatter also lauded Shahid Kapoor's portrayal in Kabir Singh, saying that his brother truly earned the appreciation for the depth and dedication he brought to the role. The Royals actor remarked that Shahid infused the character with complexity, adding dignity, righteousness, and vulnerability that only a seasoned actor could achieve. Expressing admiration, Ishaan said he is proud of Shahid and looks up to him, emphasizing that his brother consistently pours his heart and soul into his performances. The Homebound actor highlighted that long before Kabir Singh, Shahid Kapoor had consistently upheld a certain quality in his work, regardless of commercial ups and downs over his 20-year career. He noted that Shahid has often challenged the status quo, sometimes making unconventional choices that were either ahead of their time or bold departures from the norm. Citing examples like Haider, Ishaan emphasized how such roles showcased Shahid's artistic range and fearless approach. He also praised films like Kaminey, which further demonstrated Shahid's commitment to complex, experimental characters.

‘Kabir Singh was not an easy character to watch, but Shahid Kapoor deserved the love': Ishaan Khatter

Sandeep Reddy Vanga's 2019 Hindi film Kabir Singh, led to a debate around the titular character, played by Shahid Kapoor, and whether it was used to glorify violence against women. However, Shahid's younger brother Ishaan Khatter has an interesting take on it. 'If somebody is so attached and opinionated, it's coming from a place of passion. We have a very passionate cinema audience. Certain societal discussions about that film were important and conversations that should've been had. Not giving the film a hall pass and saying it was good because it started that conversation or was intentioned for that, I'm not saying that,' said Ishaan in an interview with Zoom. He added, 'Not only as a brother, but also as an actor, I saw the layers Shahid brought to that part. It's not easy to watch a character like that, let alone empathize with. While seeing all the red flags laid out in front of you, it's undeniable there was a large audience who loved that work and the film.' Ishaan Khatter further praised Shahid Kapoor's performance and said, 'He deserved the love for the work he put in and what he was able to bring to the character. I'd go as far as to say he brought layers, a certain dignity, a righteousness, and at the same time, a brokenness to a character that only an actor of that calibre can. I'm very proud of him and look up to him. He puts his heart and soul into his work.' Ishaan pointed out that even before Kabir Singh, Shahid has maintained a standard of quality despite all the commercial setbacks in his over-two-decade-long acting career. 'We've seen it time and again he's challenged the status quo. He's gone right, he's gone wrong. He's been ahead of the curve. He's done films like Haider, which were highly ahead of their time,' added Ishaan. Shahid Kapoor played a disillusioned Kashmiri student in Vishal Bhardwaj's 2014 political crime thriller Haider, an Indian adaptation of William Shakespeare's seminal play Hamlet. Prior to that, Shahid and Vishal collaborated on the 2009 action film Kaminey, which Ishaan also mentioned while lauding Shahid's choices. 'He's also done things like Kaminey at age 29, which no one expected him to do. He's constantly trying to push the envelope as an actor. I'm all for that cause. Of course, there's a certain responsibility you have as a public figure to talk about things that matter and get behind things you believe in. I don't think it's okay to be irresponsible. But as far as his work is concerned, he's always been top of the line,' said Ishaan. The Royals actor added he's biased towards his brother's Udta Punjab (2016) because he worked on it as an assistant director.

Ishaan Khatter says he never tried to shine in brother Shahid Kapoor's light, calls him a tough act to follow: ‘His parents were actors, but he's a movie star'

Ishaan Khatter was widely known as Shahid Kapoor's brother, before he made his debut with Majid Majidi's 2017 film Beyond the Clouds. Since then, Ishaan has proved his worth with projects like Dhadak, A Suitable Boy, Pippa, The Perfect Couple, and most recently, Homebound, which premiered at the 78th Cannes Film Festival last week. 'When my brother got married is the first time that there was media and paparazzi. That thing had started to get blown up, along with social media. I was clicked, and after that, I was spotted and recognized at a few places. At least in my case, it wasn't by design. But obviously, you're known as someone's brother,' said Ishaan. In the interview with Zoom, Ishaan pointed out how the situation was different in his and Shahid's case. 'His parents were working actors and professionals, but none of them were movie stars, right? I had an elder brother whose act to follow would be… like he's a movie star! But I never tried to shine in his light because everyone wants to be known for their own personality, right?' 'I'm proud I'm his brother. If people click and know me because I'm his brother, that's obvious because I haven't done anything they know me by. So my focus was to just work. I anyway have to tread my own path and make my own life. I'm totally fine with it being slow and steady. I'm in no rush to show people this is who I am. I'd much rather show it with my work,' added Ishaan. Ishaan recalled how despite working with Shahid as a child actor in Mahesh Manjrekar's 2005 fantasy comedy Vaah! Life Ho Toh Aisi! and working as an assistant director on Shahid's 2016 film Udta Punjab, his brother didn't know whether Ishaan was a good actor or not. The first time Shahid realised that was when he watched Beyond the Clouds. At a special screening, Shahid insisted he wants to sit separately, instead of with Ishaan, while watching the film. 'When the film finished, I turned around, and his body language was like this (relaxed). And then I went and sat next to him, he just put his arm around me and said, 'Wow yaar, tu toh actor hai! Ab mujhe jhooth nahi bolna padega! (You're an actor! Now, I won't have to lie that you are one).' It's my favourite memory,' said Ishaan. Neelima and Rajesh also went separate way subsequently, when Ishaan was quite young.
