Tripura Cong urges rights panel to protect its minority leader

Agartala: The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee sought protection from the Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) for its leader, Md Shahjahan Islam, who is on the run to evade arrest following controversy over his alleged derogatory remarks against the chief minister earlier this week. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Congress president Asish Kumar Saha said a party delegation met chairman THRC, Justice Arindam Lodh, on Thursday and alleged serious human rights violations against Shahjahan's family and other minority families living in the Shantipara area of the city. Congress urged the commission to ensure the safety and security of the residents. They complained that instead of apprehending the main accused, East Agartala Police arrested Shahjahan's elderly father and brother, who were unaware of the controversial episode, and were sent to judicial custody until June 23. Saha alleged that some BJP workers were hatching a conspiracy to evict Shahjahan and other minority families. He added that local leaders had also issued an ultimatum to the entire minority community in the area to leave Shantipara as soon as possible if they wanted to save their lives. Tripura Police on Monday arrested the father and brother of Shahjahan Islam for his comments against CM Manik Saha, the state govt, and other BJP leaders in connection with the alleged obstruction of the celebration of Eid-al-Adha on June 7. Shahjahan, in a Facebook live, protested an incident that occurred on the day of the Eid celebration, where some miscreants pulled the beard of a 70-year-old man for celebrating Eid in Amarpur under Tripura's Gomati district. Congress leaders, however, alleged that a group of miscreants backed by BJP attacked the residence of Shahjahan Islam at Shantipara with firearms and assaulted his parents and wife, and vandalised the house. BJP's state minority morcha president and former minister Billal Mia filed a complaint against Md Sahajan Islam at West Agartala police station for his statement against the chief minister on social media.

Tripura Congress leader's father, brother arrested after he makes ‘derogatory' comments about CM

The Tripura Police on Monday arrested the father and brother of Congress leader Shahjahan Islam after he allegedly made derogatory remarks about Chief Minister Manik Saha and Bharatiya Janata Party minority wing leader Jashim Uddin, reported The Indian Express. The arrests came hours after Islam's home in Agartala was allegedly attacked by a mob. His father and brother, Khairul Islam and Najrul Miah, have been remanded to judicial custody till June 23, according to Maktoob Media. The BJP has alleged that Khairul Islam and Najrul Miah assaulted party workers who had gone to their home to protest against Shahjahan Islam's allegedly derogatory remarks. The Hindutva party also filed a police complaint against the Congress leader. In a video posted on social media, Shahjahan Islam was said to have criticised the police and state government for failing to act against miscreants who allegedly disrupted livestock slaughter during the Muslim festival of Bakri Eid on Saturday, reported Maktoob Media. He also allegedly called Saha and the BJP minority leaders 'cheats' and asked members of the Muslim community to boycott them. Bakri Eid, also known as Eid-al-Adha, commemorates the spirit of sacrifice and entails the slaughtering of livestock. The Congress leader was referring to the incident when a cow was allegedly slaughtered in public in the Chhanban area of Gomati district's Udaipur on Saturday, reported The Indian Express. Two persons were detained in connection with the slaughter. There are no restrictions on cattle slaughter in Tripura. However, the Agartala Municipal Corporation has asked meat vendors to get registered as part of its plan to stop uncontrolled public slaughtering of animals, according to The Indian Express. This is in line with the Tripura High Court's judgement from February 2022. The court had directed the state government to prohibit the sale of meat in public places and streets. Billal Miah, the BJP minority wing president in Tripura and the complainant against Shahjahan Islam, alleged that the Congress leader had made 'obscene comments' about the chief minister. 'On one hand, there has been an attempt to malign the state government and on the other hand, there is a conspiracy to create unrest among communities,' Billal Miah was quoted as saying by The Indian Express. Meanwhile, in his statement to the police, Islam claimed that he was attacked by a mob upon returning home on Sunday night. He alleged that some persons were brandishing firearms and wanted to murder him, but failed.

Tripura Congress leader Shahjahan Islam's father and brother arrested hours after his ‘derogatory' remarks on CM Saha

The Tripura police arrested Congress youth leader Shahjahan Islam's father and brother on Monday, hours after Islam's home in Agartala came under attack following his criticism of the government and police over incidents related to animal sacrifice for Eid al-Azha. The BJP filed a police complaint against the Congress leader over his comments about Chief Minister Manik Saha and BJP minority wing leader and state minority board chairman Jashim Uddin, among others, on social media. In a social media video, Shahjahan Islam was seen lashing out at the police and the state government for purportedly failing to stand up to miscreants who allegedly interrupted the customary animal slaughter on Bakrid and was seen spitting, expressing disgust for the police. The Congress leader also allegedly used derogatory language for Saha and called BJP minority leaders cheats, urging Muslims to 'socially boycott' community members who are leaders in the saffron party. 'He made obscene comments about the chief minister and the state government on social media. He also made comments on minority morcha leaders and myself. On one hand, there has been an attempt to malign the state government and on the other hand, there is a conspiracy to create unrest among communities. All these are found in his Facebook post,' said BJP minority wing state president Billal Miah, the complainant in the case. Islam's comments sparked a controversy online. Meanwhile, the Congress protested in Unakoti district against the attack on Islam's house in Agartala's Shantipara area, while the BJP held a protest rally in the capital condemning his remarks. In his statement to the police, Islam said he was attacked by a band of goons as soon as he returned home from the state Congress office on Sunday night. He also alleged that the goons, who were brandishing firearms, wanted to murder him but failed since he had locked himself inside a room and later assaulted his parents and wife. There were clashes related to animal sacrifice in different places in Gomati district's Udaipur area. Four people were arrested for allegedly slaughtering a cow in public near a waterbody in the Chhanban area on Saturday. Opposition political parties condemned the attack on Islam's home and demanded action. Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury said, 'This incident is deeply worrisome and condemnable. The youth who made a video, if he said such things about the CM, I don't support it. It should not be done. But the incident that happened as a reaction was even more wrong.' The CPM leader said Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman and state president Ashish Kumar Saha, who visited the site of the violence, might also have come under attack if the police were not present there. He further alleged that some locals were threatened that their houses would be ransacked if they did not leave the locality by Monday evening. Chaudhary added that he called up the DGP over the issue. 'The state government should take steps so that law and order does not deteriorate. Or else, they won't be able to contain the outrage,' he said. Congress leader Birajit Sinha also condemned the attack and said the culture of attacking houses started after the BJP came to power.
