TNPL 2025 kicks off tomorrow, Shahrukh's Kings to take on Ashwin's Dragons in opener

Coimbatore, June 4 (UNI) IPL GT star Shahrukh Khan-led Lyca Kovai Kings will lock horns with R Ashwin's Dindigul Dragons in a rematch of last year's final to kickstart the 9th edition of the Shriram Capital-Tamil Nadu Premier League at the Sri Ramakrishna College of Arts and Science Cricket Ground here on Thursday night. Dindigul denied Kovai Kings a hat-trick of crowns (joint-winners in 2022), as Ashwin turned in a splendid all-round performance in a low-scoring contest to help his side secure their maiden title. Meanwhile, Chepauk Super Gillies, the most-decorated franchise with four trophies, will begin their campaign on Friday against iDream Tiruppur Tamizhans in what is India's longest-running regional T20 league. Adding excitement to Season 9 are the new-look squads following February's mega auction after the eight franchises were allowed to retain a maximum of five players each. Among the prominent movements were pacer M Mohammed to SKM Salem Spartans, left-arm spinner Swapnil Singh to Chepauk Super Gillies and toporder batters U Mukilesh and J Suresh Kumar to Trichy Grand Cholas, while all-rounder Vijay Shankar returns to Chepauk Super Gillies. With Sai Sudharsan picked for India's Test tour of England, exciting teenager Andre Siddharth will be expected to play a key role for his new franchise, Kovai Kings. At a press conference on Wednesay, Kovai Kings' head coach J Hariesh said his side will also miss the services of all-rounder RS Ambrish, away with the India U-19 team, who 'would have taken the No 6 slot.' Among other franchise news, all-rounder Washington Sundar, also picked for the England Test tour, will not be available for Trichy Grand Cholas, while former UAE wrist-spinner Karthik Meiyappan, who has now moved to his birth place Chennai, will don Siechem Madurai Panthers colours. All eight franchises appear balanced, given the reshaping of squads at the mega auction, and this promises exciting and close matches this season. 'Teams can look strong on paper, but what happens during the match decides everything,' Dindigul spinner Varun Chakravarthy said. It took Dindigul eight seasons to secure their maiden crown after runner-up finishes in 2018 and 2019, and the side is looking to extend their supremacy. 'We have a trophy to defend and make a statement this year by winning it two times in a row,' India spinner Chakravarthy added. Kovai Kings' skipper Shahrukh felt a good season boils down to the 'process that we put in place and the brand of cricket that we play.' 'It's a fresh start, really, because barring the five players that were retained, most of the others are new to the side,' Shahrukh, last edition's Player of the Tournament, said at the press meet. After a week in Coimbatore (until June 11), the action will shift to the Salem Cricket Foundation ground (June 13-19), followed by CSK ground in Tirunelveli (June 21-26) before moving to the NPR College ground in Dindigul for the business end, with the final on July 6. The 32-match season will also feature six double headers, with the afternoon game commencing at 3.15 p.m. N Jagadeesan (Chepauk Super Gillies, 2260) and Sai Kishore (IDream Tiruppur Tamizhans, 78 wickets) are the tournament's leading run-getter and wicket-taker respectively, while Shivam Singh (Dindigul Dragons, 364) and M Poiyamozhi (SKM Salem Spartans,16 wickets) topped the charts last year. Matches will be broadcast live on Star Sports 1 Tamil and Star Sports 2 and live- streamed on FanCode. UNI GV 2135

Two peddlers held with drugs worth Rs1.5L

Indore: Khajrana police have arrested two individuals involved in trade of illegal drugs and recovered 12.8 grams of brown sugar worth approximately Rs 1.5 lakh and a motorcycle used in the crime from them. The action is part of a focused drive directed by senior city police officials to control the rising menace of narcotics in Indore. During one such operation, police teams were patrolling and monitoring various spots in Khajrana locality when they spotted two suspicious individuals near RE-2 Road. Upon seeing the police, the duo attempted to flee, but were quickly surrounded and apprehended by the team. Upon questioning, they identified themselves as Saddam (33), a resident of Tanjeem Nagar, and Shahrukh (31), a resident of Roshan Nagar, both from the Khajrana area. A search led to the recovery of 12.8 grams of brown sugar and a motorcycle from them. Both individuals admitted to limited education and working as tile setters. They also confessed that they were addicted to drugs and purchased narcotics at lower prices to resell at higher rates to other addicts to sustain their own habits. A case was registered against them under Section 8/21 of the NDPS Act. Police obtained a remand to interrogate the accused further about their sources and possible accomplices.

A bull named ‘JF-17 Thunder' sold for Rs5m

HYDERABAD: A big bull named 'JF-17 Thunder', weighing 1,600 kilograms, was sold for Rs5 million here. The impressive sacrificial animal has attracted crowds eager for selfies and a closer look. Shahrukh, the bull's previous owner, organised a grand farewell featuring a festive procession filled with decorations and entertainment for the buyer and their guests. In a display of cultural exchange, hosts and visitors exchanged garlands, along with traditional Ajraks, celebrating the significance of this momentous occasion. The name of the bull seems to be inspired by JF-17 Thunder, a combat aircraft used by the Pakistan Air Force to successfully down Indian Air Force aircraft during the recent Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos. The sale of the massive bull for such a significant sum highlights the immense value placed on prime sacrificial animals ahead of Eid ul Adha. While the impressive size and price of JF-17 Thunder have captured the public imagination, the true essence of sacrifice, as emphasised by religious scholars, lies in piety and seeking the pleasure of Allah, the Almighty.

Two from MP held with mephedrone worth Rs 52L

Ahmedabad: The City Crime Branch on Sunday arrested two persons with 525 g of mephedrone (MD drug) near the AMTS bus stop under the foot overbridge at the Ahmedabad-Vadodara Expressway. This action was part of a special drive against narcotics by the crime branch. Based on a tip-off, the crime branch team conducted a raid and detained two persons. The seized quantity of mephedrone is valued at Rs 52.5 lakh in the illegal market. Along with the drugs, police also seized two mobile phones worth Rs 10,000, cash, one PAN card, and one Aadhaar card, stated a crime branch release. The arrested accused are identified as Ajay Prajapati (41) and Anandi Damor (41), both residents of Ratlam district in Madhya Pradesh. According to preliminary investigation, a person named Shahrukh, residing in the Vatva area of the city, is believed to be the main operator behind the drug supply. He allegedly sourced the mephedrone from a man named Kalu in Mandsaur, Madhya Pradesh. Kalu sent the drug consignments via different couriers using trains from Mandsaur to Vadodara and then through private vehicles to Ahmedabad. The delivery was usually made near the Ahmedabad-Vadodara Expressway. DCB police registered a case under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act against Prajapati and Damor and have launched an investigation to trace Shahrukh and other individuals involved in the drug trafficking network.

Shahrukh delivers but GT's middle order concerns remain

Kolkata: Lucknow Super Giants' parting shot to Gujarat Titans in this IPL was to push them into the unknown territory of what happens if Shubman Gill or Sai Sudharsan doesn't hold the fort at one end. A glimpse of that concern made itself visible at Ahmedabad when Gill, Sudharsan and Jos Buttler were back in the dugout with the team on 96, still needing 140 to win in 63 balls. This is where the middle order should have weighed in but barring Shahrukh Khan, who scored 57 off 29 balls, and some support from Sherfane Rutherford (38 off 22), GT showed little resistance. Too much of anything skews the balance and that is exactly what Titans are facing in a campaign where their top-three has scored nearly 77% of all their runs, with the No. 5 never being summoned within the first 10 overs in 12 matches. Even the high-scoring chases haven't made them sweat. Only thrice before Thursday were Gujarat Titans stretched beyond 180 while chasing, the top three accounting for 161 out of a 232-run chase against Punjab Kings, 140 out of 204 against Delhi Capitals before Sai Sudharsan (108 no) and Shubman Gill (93 no) chased down 205 against DC with an unbroken opening stand. For the first time were GT in a situation where the middle order had to fire together and they couldn't. The defeat, apart from denying Titans two points that would have pushed them closer to a guaranteed top spot, also served as a timely reality check. Gill and Sudharsan won't always click, and with Buttler set to be leaving before the playoffs, Titans need to sort their batting in such a way that it isn't found wanting again. Which might feel daunting since only Shahrukh seems to have got a hang of his job description, making the most of the limited opportunities he has got so far with a strike rate of 188.46, the highest among all specialist Titans batters. For an uncapped player who has crossed 30 five times in 46 innings, that strike rate speaks volumes about the clarity of mind needed to approach scenarios where the asking rate is close to 15. So on paper, Titans shouldn't have had anything to worry about. But they did. 'After the first three wickets, our middle order batted really well and brought the game on course,' Sudharsan said at the post-match press conference after the defeat. 'From there, having four overs, 54 runs on the board, I think any other day we would have got those runs for the team.' Chasing 235 is never easy, and also not a one-man job in such pressing scenarios. Rutherford has been impressive with his range, but considering he has been consistently sent ahead of Shahrukh, the strike rate should have been better but it (160) isn't. Still, Rutherford persisting through meant Shahrukh could keep the chase alive till the 17th over. 'In the first six, seven, eight games, Sherfane stepped up and got so many runs in the middle order and changed games for us, ' said Sudharsan. 'Even in Mumbai he changed the course of the game for us. Even Shahrukh bhai got an opportunity today to showcase his talent. So, I feel the middle order is on course as well. I don't think there is some gap or something in the middle order. I feel, touch wood, things went well for all the three batters at the top so they didn't get more opportunities to play in the first half of the tournament.' A big missing link here is Rahul Tewatia, pulling down the middle-order returns even though he has a strike rate (181.57) similar to Shahrukh's but less than half his season aggregate (69 as opposed to Shahrukh's 147). Coming into the chase at the start of the 17th over is something Tewatia is used to by now, but his inability to score quick runs—his highest in a chase so far is 11—should be concerning now. That, and Rashid Khan's middling form with the bat—he aggregates 28, his lowest ever in the IPL—means the Titans are moving into the playoffs with a middle order yet to deliver a consolidated performance.
