Two arrested over RM600k worth of unapproved goods from Myanmar

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Authorities have arrested two men, including a foreign national, after uncovering a storage facility containing hundreds of boxes of unapproved food, medicines and cosmetics from Myanmar. The operation was a joint effort involving the intelligence branch of Battalion 2 General Operations Force (GOF), the Seberang Prai Tengah District Health Office, and the Penang Pharmaceutical enforcement cranch. GOF Northern Brigade commander, Senior Assistant Commissioner Shahrum Hashim, said the raid led to the seizure of 868 boxes of food items and 1,567 boxes of medicines and cosmetics, all of which lacked approval certificates from the Health Ministry and the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Division. "The total estimated value of the seized goods is RM559,190. "Preliminary investigations revealed that the storage site had been in use for two years, with the products intended for sale to Myanmar nationals living and working in Bukit Mertajam and surrounding areas," he said in a statement today. Shahrum said the authorities identified the location and thwarted the suspects' efforts to distribute unsafe food, medicines and cosmetics in Malaysia. The foreign suspect is being investigated under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, which carries a fine of up to RM10,000, imprisonment of up to five years, or whipping. The local suspect is being investigated under Section 55B of the same Act, which provides for a fine of between RM10,000 and RM50,000 or imprisonment of up to 12 months. The Penang Pharmaceutical Enforcement Branch is continuing investigations under the Control of Drugs and Cosmetics Regulations 1984. Shahrum added that enforcement efforts would continue across Perak, Penang and Kedah. "We urge the public to assist us by reporting any suspicious activities," he said.

IPOH: The 2nd Battalion General Operations Force (GOF) in Kulim, Kedah, has successfully seized 6,100 cartons of various brands of illicit cigarettes worth more than RM2 million (RM2,014,600). Man nabbed, RM2mil worth of untaxed cigarettes seized

GEORGE TOWN: Authorities have arrested a man and seized 6,100 cartons of untaxed cigarettes worth over RM2 million during an enforcement operation on the North-South Expressway (NSE). The operation, carried out by the General Operations Force (GOF) Kulim, Kedah, took place at Km139.9 northbound, near the Penang Bridge interchange. GOF Northern Brigade commander Senior Assistant Commissioner Shahrum Hashim said the cigarettes were being transported from the southern region for distribution in the northern states. He said investigations revealed that the syndicate had been operating for at least a month, using a specific method to transport the contraband before distributing it to traders. He said the estimated value of the seized cigarettes was RM2,014,600. "We have been monitoring the movement and modus operandi used to transport the cigarettes for distribution to traders over the past month. "We believe this successful operation has disrupted yet another cigarette distribution syndicate profiting from evading government taxes," he said in a statement tonight. The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967. It carries a fine of up to 20 times the value of the goods or RM500,000, or imprisonment of up to five years, or both, upon conviction. Shahrum said the operation is part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal smuggling activities across Perak, Penang, and Kedah. "We urge the public to report any suspicious activity to help curb tax evasion and smuggling crimes," he added. Shahrum reaffirmed the agency's commitment to strict enforcement and zero tolerance toward illegal trade. #kw, NST, Malaysia, News, Malaysia News, GOF, Shahrum Hashim, seize, 6,100 cartons of untaxed cigarettes, RM2 million, NSE, man arrested

Three killed as car crashes into divider on KL-Seremban Expressway

KUALA LUMPUR: Three people have died after a car hit a highway exit divider along the KL–Seremban Expressway. The Fire and Rescue Department said a 10-member team from the Sungai Besi Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) was deployed to the scene, adding that fire personnel took about one hour to remove them from the badly wrecked vehicle. A photo released by the fire department showed several rescue personnel using a heavy metal cutter to cut through the middle section of the severely damaged car, which had slammed into a concrete divider. Operations commander Shahrum Din said that upon arrival at the scene at 6.07am, the team found that the incident involved a Toyota Vios, which had veered off the road and collided with the exit divider on the motorway. "There were three adult male Indian victims trapped in the vehicle, and the fire personnel took approximately one hour to extricate all of them," he said in a statement. The victims were between the ages of 29 and 32. Shahrum said the three victims were confirmed dead at the scene by medical personnel and were removed from the scene by the police.
