New LRT route designs offers latest street-level details of Hamilton mega project
New conceptual designs for Hamilton's planned LRT route are now available for the public to view online. Provincial agency Metrolinx recently posted updated maps of various segments of the planned light rail transit route along the Main, King and Queenston corridor. The last time neighbourhood-level route maps were made available to the public was more than seven years ago — for the original version of a project that was later cancelled amid budget concerns in 2019. The new maps reflect the latest proposals for track alignment, signalized intersections, vehicle-turning options, pedestrian crossings and platform locations along the 17-stop route. Worth noting: Metrolinx warns the route maps are 'subject to change and will continue to be refined' as project planning moves ahead. The LRT route map. Potential changes could also come as a result of 'ongoing discussions' with the city about pedestrian realm improvements and other corridor features, noted city LRT director Abdul Shaikh. For example, he said the city is discussing the 'potential reinstatement' of more pedestrian crossings of the LRT tracks than what is currently reflected in the newly posted maps. He also noted a final design will not be settled until after Metrolinx partners with a contractor to build the transit line. In the meantime, Shaikh said he is preparing a short update on the design concept for councillors on the city's LRT subcommittee, which next meets in June. An artist rendering of a Queen Street LRT stop. The new maps also reflects major changes to the plan publicized over the last few years — including the axing of a planned LRT-only bridge over the Highway 403 valley in favour of rerouting the tracks up and down Dundurn Street to use the existing Main Street West road bridge. The maps also depict another change that will send trains down Frid Street to reach a maintenance and operations facility in west Hamilton. The first phase of construction for the off-and-on-again project finally went to tender this month — almost exactly 10 years after the first iteration of the project received government funding. The cancelled project was resurrected in 2021 through a $3.4-billion capital funding agreement between the province and federal government. Error! Sorry, there was an error processing your request.
