Knicks fire coach despite stunning playoff upset over Celtics
The Knicks just pulled off their best playoff run in 25 years but it was not enough to save the job of their head coach. Shams Charania of reports that the Knicks are firing Tom Thibodeau after five seasons with the Knicks. New York bowed out to the Indiana Pacers in six games in the East Finals after a historic Game 1 collapse at home. They entered the series as slight favorites but could not overcome the Game 1 collapse on their way to a 4-2 series defeat. Advertisement Thibodeau had his best season at the helm in New York in 2024-25, going 51-31 after the team made several blockbuster offseason moves including acquiring Karl-Anthony Towns and Mikal Bridges. However, the team had an up-and-down season overall before finishing as the No. 3 seed in the East. The Knicks won a hard fought first round series against the Pistons and then pulled off a massive upset against the Celtics after pulling off double-digit comebacks in three games during the 4-2 series win. Thibodeau finishes his tenure in New York with a 226-174 record. His dismissal adds a huge layer of intrigue to the NBA offseason. Teams around the East including the Knicks will be fearing up for a chance to take down the Pacers next season with the Celtics expected to be extremely shorthanded following Jayson Tatum's Achilles injury. It appears the Knicks felt like their best chance to move forward would be without Thibodeau. More Celtics content Read the original article on MassLive.

Who's responsible for Tom Thibodeau's exit from New York Knicks? NBA insider spills beans on front office decision
Tom Thibodeau. Image via: Bill Streicher-Imagn Images The New York Knicks have officially parted ways with head coach Tom Thibodeau, just days after the team's impressive run to the Eastern Conference Finals. Despite overseeing one of the most successful Knicks seasons in recent history, the front office determined a change was necessary, triggering immediate speculation about what led to this abrupt shakeup at Madison Square Garden. NBA insider Shams Charania recently shared details on who was responsible for his exit. Shams Charania reveals why the New York Knicks fired Tom Thibodeau It didn't take long for top NBA insider Shams Charania to reveal who made the final call. Speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, Charania shared that the New York Knicks owner James Dolan and team president Leon Rose were the architects behind Thibodeau's dismissal. 'As soon as the season ended, they started meetings internally,' Charania said. 'James Dolan, the Knicks Owner, and Leon Rose, the President, they believed the best path for this team to take the next step to win a championship was they needed a new voice. ' — PatMcAfeeShow (@PatMcAfeeShow) Charania confirmed the decision wasn't made lightly, but was nonetheless firm. 'So Leon Rose and James Dolan came to the decision this morning that they were going to part ways with Tom Thibodeau. He's fired as their head coach,' he said. The timing of the firing caught many by surprise, especially since Thibodeau had just led the Knicks to their first Eastern Conference Finals appearance in 25 years. Shams himself admitted to being stunned. 'You think about what they've done as an organization—like to lose in the conference finals, that's not a bad feat,' he explained. 'This is a team that has gone from really out of much contention at all, and then when Tom Thibodeau comes in, they've become respectable again… Absolutely shocked, but they've been having meetings for the last 24 hours and this is the decision they came with.' Despite those accomplishments, the team's statement echoed the same message as the front office believed that it was time to move forward. 'Our organization is singularly focused on winning a championship for our fans. This pursuit led us to the difficult decision to inform Tom Thibodeau that we've decided to move in another direction,' Leon Rose said via official press release. 'We can't thank Tom enough for pouring his heart and soul into each and every day of being the New York Knicks head coach… Ultimately, we made the decision we feel is best for our organization moving forward. NBA insider: This offseason has most ‘anticipation' and ‘craziest' outlook ever
The NBA is still in the thick of the conference finals right now, but an offseason full of insanity could be on the horizon. Coming off of a trade deadline in which the NBA saw perhaps the most shocking trade in league history with Luka Doncic shipped to the Lakers, ESPN insider Shams Charania thinks the chaos will continue. 'This is the most, I think, anticipation team executives have had over an offseason,' Charania said on the 'Pat McAfee Show' on Tuesday. 'I think this offseason might be the most craziest ever.' The NBA is perhaps the most balanced it's ever been, as whoever wins the Finals this season among the Thunder, Timberwolves, Knicks and Pacers will be the seventh different champion in seven years. 'The parity of the league, it's so thin right now,' Charania explained. 'You can win a championship or you might be falling into the lottery.' 5 Shams Charania joined The Pat McAfee Show on Tuesday and gave his insight on the upcoming NBA offseason. The Pat McAfee Show 5 The Pacers and Knicks took down the East's top-two teams to reach the Eastern Conference Finals. NBAE via Getty Images The league is seemingly wide open for the taking. Teams like the Pacers and Knicks are proving it, as neither were expected to make it out of the East and into the NBA Finals, yet here we are. With this much parity, many teams can all feel like they are just one piece away from competing for a championship — which is why this offseason could get hectic. The recent Giannis Antetokounmpo trade rumors have been well documented, as the Bucks have failed to put a contending roster around their superstar who led them to a championship just four years ago. The Rockets, Nets and Mavericks appear to be among the few teams who could have the assets to acquire such a superstar. 5 Giannis Antetokounmpo has spent the entirety of his 12-year career with the Bucks but could be on the move this offseason. AP Considering Antetokounmpo's resume, and the players and picks he'd yield in a potential transaction, a trade of this magnitude would surely prove Charania's point. It's not just Antetokounmpo, though. 5 Kevin Durant is more than likely headed out of Phoenix this offseason. NBAE via Getty Images Kevin Durant seems to be a shoo-in for a trade this summer with the Suns' trainwreck of a season. Charania reported that Durant and the Spurs had mutual interest at the trade deadline and could revisit trade talks soon. 5 The Celtics are expected to shake up their roster this offseason as they've exceeded the NBA's second apron. NBAE via Getty Images The reigning NBA champs will also be shaking up their roster. The Celtics are over the NBA's second apron salary cap threshold, meaning their championship core must be broken up otherwise the team could face limitations on trades, free agency and draft picks. Joel Embiid, James Harden, Zion Williamson, Devin Booker and Trae Young are some other superstars who could be inquired about by other teams — considering their current teams' outlooks. If Charania's insider reports and the Doncic trade from the deadline have taught NBA fans anything, it's that nothing and no one is off limits.

'They're turning into a destination': Shams Charania is talking about the Indiana Pacers?!
Pro athletes often dream of playing in Los Angeles, New York and Miami. How about Indiana? ESPN NBA reporter Shams Charania believes the tide is turning toward the Pacers, who are in the Eastern Conference Finals for the second straight year. Advertisement Charania joined the "Pat McAfee Show" just outside Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Tuesday to discuss all things NBA. The Pacers lead the New York Knicks 2-1 with Game 4 coming Tuesday night. "They're turning into a destination," Charania said. "That's a big statement. Players look at Tyrese Haliburton, look at Pascal Siakam, look at what the front office has done. They've been so good at identifying 'dogs' — identifying players they know want to win and want to compete." Pacers seek a bounce back: Pacers 'have to be a lot better in a lot of areas' Siakam made the NBA All-Star Game this season, and Haliburton earned third-team All-NBA honors. Advertisement Indiana trusts its bench as much as any NBA team, and Charania believes that will appeal to players seeking a fresh start.
