Colts' Anthony Richardson suffers shoulder injury with quarterback battle looming

Anthony Richardson heads into his third season with a real quarterback battle, but his pursuit to win the starting job for the 2025 season will be harder after suffering an injury. Richardson is dealing with a shoulder injury in his throwing arm, and he won't be participating in the Colts' minicamp next week, per head coach Shane Steichen. Steichen added that Richardson suffered the injury last week during organized team activities. "Doctors, trainers checked it out," Steichen said, per "He's got some aggravation in his AC joint. So, we're going to sit him out this week. Obviously, he'll sit out for minicamp. We'll see when he comes back. Not going to put a timetable for training camp on it, but when he does come back, we'll ease him into throwing, and then we'll go from there. The good thing is he's not going to need a procedure right now." While Steichen noted the injury not being serious enough for surgery, a procedure wasn't ruled out down the line. Richardson has dealt with numerous injuries in his first two NFL seasons, which included a season-ending shoulder injury after four games in his rookie year. An oblique injury in 2024 kept him out two games. Richardson, the team's fourth overall pick in 2023 out of Florida, struggled in his return to the Colts last year, throwing for just 1,814 yards in 11 games with a 47.7% completion rate. Steichen made the move to bench Richardson last season as he struggled, with backup Joe Flacco replacing him under center. This year, the Colts brought in Daniel Jones, who the New York Giants cut ties with midway through the 2024 campaign due to his own struggles, to compete with Richardson in training camp. While Jones didn't pan out under his four-year extension in New York, he does have years of starting in the NFL under his belt. His addition to the quarterbacks room led many to believe Richardson's job wasn't safe. Richardson now has to battle another injury before battling Jones. "It's frustrating, but he is in good spirits," Steichen said of Richardson. "So we're working through it right now." With Richardson sidelined, Jones will be getting the lion's share of minicamp reps. Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

BREAKING NEWS Anthony Richardson aggravates long-standing injury, putting doubt on his 2025 season

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson has again hurt the right shoulder joint - his throwing arm - in an agonizing repeat of the issue that ruined his 2023 season. As it stands he is sidelined indefinitely, coach Shane Steichen said Thursday. Richardson will miss next week's mandatory minicamp for the Colts and it is unclear what his status will be when training camp starts on June 22. 'Not going to put a timetable for training camp on it, but when he does come back, we'll ease him into throwing and then we'll go from there,' Steichen said. The news paves the way for Daniel Jones to make the starting spot on his own, with the former New York Giants man signing a one-year deal with the team in March. 'Daniel will get a lot of reps and then we'll see how it plays out,' Steichen added.

Colts QB Anthony Richardson is sidelined indefinitely with a right shoulder injury

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson has a shoulder injury that will sideline him indefinitely, coach Shane Steichen said Thursday. Richardson aggravated a joint in his throwing shoulder, which he had season-ending surgery on in October 2023, his rookie season. The third-year quarterback reported soreness in his right shoulder during last week's organized team activities and hasn't practiced since. He will miss next week's three-day mandatory minicamp. Steichen did not clarify if Richardson will be available for training camp later this summer. 'Doctors, trainers checked it out,' Steichen said Thursday. 'He's got some aggravation in his AC joint. So we're gonna sit him out this week. Obviously, he'll sit out for minicamp. We'll see when he comes back. Not gonna put a timetable for training camp on it, but when he does come back, we'll ease him into throwing, and then we'll go from there. The good thing is he's not gonna need a procedure right now.' Steichen said the injury occurred because of 'stress over time.' Asked whether this kind of injury is normal for players who previously had AC joint injuries, Steichen said he was not sure. It's the latest roadblock for the young quarterback, whose career has been marred by injuries, inconsistency and a failure to live up to expectations. Richardson has missed 17 games in two seasons because of injuries; he was sidelined 12 games in 2023 because of the initial AC joint sprain; he missed two games last season with back spasms, another pair because of an oblique/hip injury and one with a concussion. Indianapolis also benched Richardson in a pair of games for veteran Joe Flacco last season. The injury also comes as Richardson competes with Daniel Jones — who signed as a free agent in March — for the starting job in Indianapolis. ___ AP NFL:

Colts QB Anthony Richardson out indefinitely with injury to throwing shoulder

INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson injured his throwing shoulder and will be out indefinitely, coach Shane Steichen said Thursday, creating a fresh concern for a player whose first two seasons in the NFL were plagued by health issues. The injury is to Richardson's AC joint, which he previously had season-ending surgery on in October of 2023, his rookie season. Richardson reported pain in his AC joint after an OTA practice last Thursday. He has not practiced since. Advertisement 'Doctors, trainers checked it out. He's got some aggravation in his AC joint,' Steichen said. 'So, we're gonna sit him out this week. Obviously, he'll sit out for minicamp. We'll see when he comes back. Not gonna put a timetable for training camp on it, but when he does come back, we'll ease him into throwing and then we'll go from there.' Thursday is the last day of voluntary OTAs. Veteran minicamp is scheduled for June 10-12. The report day for training camp is July 22, per Steichen. Per Shane Steichen – QB Anthony Richardson is dealing with a shoulder injury and will not participate in mini-camp next week. — Indianapolis Colts (@Colts) June 5, 2025 The injury is a result of throwing and the 'stress over time' of the motion on Richardson's AC joint, Steichen said. The coach added Richardson will not need surgery right now. Asked if the aggravation in Richardson's AC joint is a normal occurrence for someone who has had surgery on that area, Steichen said he wasn't a doctor and could not get into specifics. Steichen said the team has not considered signing another QB. The Colts added to their QB room this offseason by signing ex-New York Giants starter Daniel Jones in free agency and drafting former Notre Dame star Riley Leonard in the sixth round. Jones and Richardson are competing for the starting job. Richardson has yet to stay healthy for a sustained stretch in his NFL career. He has missed 17 games because of injuries in two seasons. Twelve of those absences were because of a severe AC joint sprain that required surgery, two were for back spasms, another two were due to an oblique injury and one was because of a concussion. He was also benched for two games last year due to what Steichen cited as a lack of game preparation. Colts GM Chris Ballard declared an open competition this offseason, in part because of Richardson's durability issues. 'We've got to have competition at the position,' Ballard said during his season-ending news conference in January. 'For one, for the fact that competition makes everybody better. And then two, he's not proven he can play 17 games.' Steichen said Jones will now take all of the first-team reps. The 2018 No. 6 pick has the upper hand in the QB competition as Richardson remains sidelined. Richardson, the No. 4 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, is the Colts' highest-drafted player since the team selected Andrew Luck No. 1 in 2012. The franchise hasn't had a mainstay at QB since Luck's surprising retirement before the 2019 season, and Richardson was supposed to be the franchise's long-term answer at the position. But beyond the injuries, Richardson's play has done little to convince the team he is the QB of the future. Advertisement Last year, Richardson threw eight TDs and 12 interceptions. His 47.7 completion percentage was the lowest mark in the NFL. He's 8-7 as a starter through two seasons. 'Obviously, it's frustrating, but he is in good spirits,' Steichen said of Richardson's latest injury. 'So, we're working through it right now.'

Colts QB Anthony Richardson (shoulder) to miss minicamp

June 5 - Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson aggravated the AC joint in his right shoulder and will not participate in next week's minicamp, head coach Shane Steichen announced Thursday. Richardson reported soreness and will rest his ailing shoulder, the same one that required AC joint surgery in 2023. Surgery is not anticipated this time around, per Steichen, who said the plan is for Richardson to return "at some point" in training camp. "Doctors, trainers checked it out," Steichen explained. "He's got some aggravation in his AC joint. So we're gonna sit him out this week. Obviously, he'll sit out for minicamp. We'll see when he comes back. Not gonna put a timetable for training camp on it, but when he does come back, we'll ease him into throwing, and then we'll go from there. The good thing is he's not gonna need a procedure right now." Richardson, the fourth overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft, is expected to battle Daniel Jones for the Colts' starting quarterback job this season. "Obviously, it's frustrating, but he is in good spirits," Steichen said. "So we're working through it right now." Richardson, 23, enters his third season with 15 starts under his belt (8-7 record), a 50.6 completion percentage, 11 touchdown passes, 10 rushing touchdowns, 13 interceptions and 12 fumbles (four lost). He completed 47.7 percent of his passes in 2024, historically bad from an accuracy perspective and easily the worst among NFL starters. He had 10 or fewer completions in six of the 11 games he appeared in last season. --Field Level Media
