Island rowing crews clinch championships at Itchen regatta
Isle of Wight rowing crews took to the water at the Itchen Imperial RC regatta last weekend (Saturday, August 2). Shanklin Sandown Rowing Club's star pair Esme Walters and Anna Scott secured the ladies junior pairs championship as they beat Christchurch in the final by five lengths, the only crew who could take the title from them. Newport Rowing Club's women's novice B crew of Becca Beaney, Cara White, Helen Hopper, Damien Cranham (Ryde) and Mariana Hare (cox) finished second in their semi final, while the women's A crew of Flora Lockey, Julia Coulson, Hannah White, Grace Garner and Fiona Brookes (cox), finished third in their final. Junior four A crew Boris Hare, Connor Garner, Nathaniel Hamilton, Eric Williams and Mariana Hare (cox) won their heat, but were beaten by rivals Southampton in the semi-final by a canvas. Read more: Wind halts racing but Cowes Week spirit shines on day three Big waves and exciting racing on day two of Cowes Week Ryde Rowing Club's coastal coxed fours A crew of Emily Kellerman, Alexis Owen, Eva Gordon, Abi Locke and Ruby Reed (cox) won their final convincingly, earning the club the Hampshire and Dorset Amateur Rowing Association women's coastal junior fours championship and selection at the South Coast Rowing Championships in Plymouth on September 5 and 6. Meanwhile, Ryde's open junior senior fours A crew of Paddy Kearney, Will Hall, Joe Roberts, Charlie Watts and Mai Read (cox) won their final, with the club's B crew of Isaac Gibson, Yogi Ashworth, Ben Robotham, Joe Bird and Harry Watts coxing following to finish second. The club's win will likely lead to the selection of the men's fours crew at the South Coast Rowing Championships. Sculler Charlie Watts finished second place in the final of the men's open sculls.

Island rower wins gold medal at World University Games
An Isle of Wight rower won a gold medal at a prestigious international event, competing as part of Team GB. Daisy Faithfull, of Shanklin Sandown Rowing Club, came first in the Women's Eight race at the World University Games in Germany. The race, based in the Rhine-Ruhr valley in Germany, saw GB leading from the beginning but being run to the end by the crew from the Netherlands. Daisy, one of 10,000 students taking part in the event from over 150 countries, faced a difficult set of trials over several months to secure her place in the squad. Sandown Shanklin Rowing Club's captain, Garry Walters, said: "Daisy joined the club when she was 13 and it has been great to track her progress and success for the club and beyond. "Daisy gained an England vest at 18. "To have further international representation is truly inspiring for us all at Shanklin, encouraging everyone to aim high."

Isle of Wight rower secures two silver medals at British Championships
Isle of Wight rowing crews made finals and impressed at the British Rowing Championships in July - with one rower securing two silver medals. The prestigious event, taking place at the Watersports Centre in Nottingham between Friday, July 18 and Monday, July 21 , saw many making their debut appearance against top athletes. But it was Islander Louis Sheasby who secured two podium finishes, coming second place in his A final in the Open J18 1x among over 100 competitors. Louis also finished second in the Open J18 2x with crewmate Daniel Page, winning two silver medals in two categories. Read more: Princess Anne watches Fastnet Race and Red Arrows in Cowes PHOTOS Isle of Wight tricking event sees young talent shine on global stage A record thirteen crews from Shanklin Sandown Rowing Club attend, made three A finals, with Mel Cockayne finishing sixth in the Beginner 1x, Connie Batley Smith claiming fifth in the JW14 1x and Josh Batchelor and Digby Ridgewell narrowly missing out on a medal finish in the J14 2x, coming fourth. New combinations in the Girls Doubles were successful, as Evie Selway and Lottie Pettitt place fourth in their E final, while Martha Eggleton and Olivia Mumberson placed fifth. Esme Walters, in her first year as a senior, beat her personal best by over 40 seconds to come fourth in her E final, while Arlo Adds, also in the early stages of their senior career, came third in their F final. Despite securing her place in the F final, Rose Collier's race was cancelled due to thunderstorm warnings. Rowers who also achieved personal bests were Theodora Travers and Evie Crew of JW18 2x, Isaac King and Fin Diffey of J16 2x, Tobin Green and Isaac King of J18 2x and Annabelle Steward of JW15 1x.
