Tailor killed daughter over ‘affair', died by suicide: Greater Noida Police

When Sharda, a helper at a private company in Greater Noida, prepared dinner on Sunday — a hearty meal of chicken curry and rice — for her husband and three children, she did not know this was the last time the family of five would be eating together. After dinner, all of them retreated to the terrace of their one-storey house in Sirsa village to sleep. When she woke up on Monday, around 6 am, she saw two bodies in one of the rooms on the ground floor — her husband, Ashok Kumar (45), was hanging from an iron rod and her 18-year-old daughter was lying dead on the floor. Police said Ashok, a tailor at a private firm, allegedly killed his daughter after he suspected her of having an affair and later hanged himself. Around 6.30 am on Monday, Sudhir Kumar, Additional DCP, Greater Noida, said police received a call on the 112 helpline that a man had died by suicide. 'A police team reached the spot and found a person hanging and the body of a woman nearby,' he said. 'When we spoke to the family members, we found that Ashok had killed his daughter over an affair and then died by suicide… The bodies have been sent for post-mortem and all aspects are being investigated,' said the Additional DCP. Dharmendra Shukla, SHO, Kasna Police Station, where the call was received, told The Indian Express that it was Ashok's brother, Hublal, who informed the police of the two deaths. 'We are still trying to figure out the exact cause of their deaths,' Shukla said. On Monday, Ashok's house wore a deserted look with a lock outside. With her two sons, aged 11 and 12, Sharda has shifted to her sister-in-law's house, a few metres away. 'Everything was going well for us. I do not know what happened between them late at night,' she told The Indian Express. 'We knew she had been talking to a man. My husband had, time and again, asked her to stop, but she did not listen. Last night, when we went to sleep, he had taken her phone,' she recalled. 'We had already found a match for her. It was a good family and they were placed well financially. We had planned her wedding after the monsoon…,' Sharda said, adding, 'She had told us she would only marry the man she liked and no one else…' Police said they have not received any complaint from the family members. Chinar Book Fair from August 2 to 10 in Srinagar

Book and culture lovers in Jammu and Kashmir are in for a treat as the Chinar Book Fair will return to Srinagar from August 2 with organisers promising additional features like a national exhibition on the ancient Sharda script, Gojri translation workshop and Tamil-Kashmiri Samvad. The organisers say that the nine-day festival will see the participation of more than 200 publishers and book stalls from across India, offering books in English, Hindi, Urdu, Kashmiri, and other Indian languages. (HT representative) After its inaugural edition in 2024 drew a good response, the festival promises to return this year with an expanded range of books, events, and voices, with an objective to give impetus to the culture of reading in Jammu and Kashmir. Organised by the National Book Trust, India in collaboration with National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language (NCPUL) and Srinagar district administration, the 2025 edition will take place at the scenic back lawns of Sheri Kashmir International Convention Centre, from August 2 to 10, a statement by the chief convener Dr Amit Wanchoo said. 'This festival is much more than a literary gathering. It reflects the spirit of learning and cultural pride in Kashmir. In a world that often feels lonely, this book festival unites us all, inspiring writers, readers and thinkers from across the country to engage with our rich literary heritage, sowing seeds of hope and understanding for future generations,' he said. The organisers say that the nine-day festival will see the participation of more than 200 publishers and book stalls from across India, offering books in English, Hindi, Urdu, Kashmiri, and other Indian languages. From bilingual children's books and academic titles to digital content and regional classics, there is something for everyone. 'But this year's festival is more than just a book exhibition. It is a space for ideas, learning, and cultural exchange. Special sessions include the Rajtarangini Samvad, with workshops and panel discussions, exploring various aspects of the historical text,' said Wanchoo. The book festival will also feature a national exhibition on the ancient Sharda script, and a first-ever Gojri translation workshop, aimed to produce bilingual books in Hindi, Urdu, Dogri, Kashmiri, and English. These efforts aim to bring lesser-represented languages and stories into the mainstream. 'A major highlight of the festival is the Tamil-Kashmiri Samvad under the Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat initiative, focusing on shared cultural and spiritual traditions across the regions,' the statement said. There will be participation of prominent scholars, educators, writers, poets, and other distinguished personalities. Other key attractions include creative writing and illustration workshops, calligraphy sessions, author talks, storytelling, laughter therapy and a wide range of activities for children. Visitors will also be able to explore the Rashtriya e-Pustakalaya, a digital platform providing free access to thousands of e-books. Evenings will feature live cultural performances like folk songs, mushaira, Kashmiri chhakri, Bhand Pather, and theatre, offering a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere for all age groups. The statement quoted professor Milind Sudhakar Marathe, chairman of NBT-India saying: 'The Chinar Book Festival is not just a showcase of books. It is about bringing people together through language, literature, and shared experiences. From ancient scripts to modern publishing, we are creating a space where heritage and innovation go hand in hand.' Yuvraj Malik, director of National Book Trust, India, said: 'After the success of the first edition, we wanted to expand the Chinar Book Festival. With new ideas and broader participation, this year's edition is designed to reach more people, especially young readers. We aim to help build a strong reading culture across Jammu & Kashmir.'

Efforts underway to form popular govt in Manipur: Ex-CM N Biren Singh

Former Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh on Saturday said efforts are underway for setting up a popular government in the state, which is now under the President's rule. Speaking at the sidelines of a programme at the BJP state headquarters here, Singh expressed hope that a new government will be formed in Manipur soon. "We are working to form a government at the earliest. We are a national party. I have faith that a government will be formed soon after looking into the ground situation. The BJP and its allies want a popular government as well. We are working for the formation of a popular government," he said. Singh said the BJP has not criticised anybody and is concentrating only on the present crisis. "We are approaching the central government and concerned persons to bring an amicable solution and peace in the state. In the meantime, we are also working to form a popular government with frequent gatherings of MLAs. Everybody wants the restoration of peace. Peace is compulsory. In the last seven or eight months, there have been no reports of fighting between communities," the former CM said. More than 260 people have been killed and thousands rendered homeless in ethnic violence between Meiteis and Kuki-Zo groups since May 2023. The Centre had on February 13 imposed President's rule in Manipur after Singh resigned as the chief minister. The state assembly, which has a tenure till 2027, has been put under suspended animation. Singh said the central government is trying to restore peace in the state. To a media query, he mentioned, "I have said earlier that illegal immigrants and drug cartels have affected the entire North East as well as the whole nation. Slowly, everyone has come to understand this issue. This change is a positive sign, and together we can fight these elements." Meanwhile, BJP Manipur unit president Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi, speaking at a book release function, said that it is not the time to discuss elections now, but it is the time to focus on peace initiatives. She told reporters, "The people want a popular government. The BJP is trying to bring a popular government and will work to realise the desire of the people. It is not the time to discuss for election now. We must focus on the process and progress of peace initiatives. I want to appeal to them to understand the pulse of the people and work accordingly." Sharda also said, "The question of whether the BJP is united or not will be known gradually. There is something called slow and steady wins the race." A book on the Emergency was released at the BJP Manipur state headquarters in Imphal on Saturday. Singh, in a post on X, said, "Pleased to release the book, 'The Emergency Diaries-Years that forged a leader" at Thambal Shanglen, Imphal today. The book offers a vivid account of Hon'ble Prime Minister, Shri @narendramodi ji's life during the dark period of Emergency and his resistance against tyrannical rule and oppression." Sharda, in another post, said, "This compelling work explores the untold stories of resistance during one of the darkest chapters in India's democratic history. It vividly captures the courage and conviction of Hon'ble PM, Adarniya Shri Narendra Modi ji, a young RSS pracharak then, his pivotal role in the fight against the Emergency." "A must-read for anyone who values democracy, resilience, and leadership forged in adversity," she said.
