UAE: Indian Expat Woman From Kerala Found dead In Sharjah On 30th Birthday, Day Of Joining New Job

An Indian expat woman from Kerala was found dead in in her Sharjah apartment early Saturday, coinciding with her 30th birthday and the first day of a new job, her family has confirmed. The deceased, Athulya Sekhar, was found dead in her flat in Rolla area, according to her sister and brother-in-law living Sharjah. The death of the mother to a 10-year-old girl has sent fresh shockwaves through the expat community from the south Indian state in the UAE. The tragedy comes just weeks after the highly publicised death of another 32-year-old Malayali woman, and her 16-month-old daughter in Sharjah, in what the police said was a murder-suicide. The forensic report had confirmed that the woman had died by hanging herself after suffocating the child to death on July 8. The incident had reportedly stemmed from marital conflicts. Athulya's death has sparked serious allegations of domestic abuse by her husband. Her parents living in Kollam district in Kerala have filed a case against the civil engineer working in Dubai and her family members here are in the process of filing a complaint against her husband in the UAE as well. 'We will be visiting the Sharjah Police for completing the formalities of filing the case tomorrow. We are also approaching the Indian Consulate in Dubai,' her brother-in-law said on Sunday. The Press Wing of the Indian Consulate said in a statement: 'We express our sincere condolences to the family of Ms Athulya Sekhar. Our team is in touch with the family and Sharjah authorities. We are extending all the possible help.' According to the family, Athulya and her daughter used to live in Kerala and used to visit her husband earlier. 'Both Athulya and her daughter have UAE residence visa. But, it was only some months ago that Athulya started staying with her husband here, leaving her daughter with her parents back home,' he added. Meanwhile, speaking to Malayalam media outlets in the UAE, Athulya's husband denied any involvement in her death, though he admitted to having physically abused her in the past. He claimed he was not at home when the incident occurred. 'We have only one key and it was with her. When I returned, I found the door open and her body was already cold,' he told reporters. He alleged that Athulya had been increasingly distant in recent months, adding that she had started sleeping separately and had even undergone an abortion back home in November last year without his consent.

Sharjah Police dismantles int'l drug network operating in Canada, Spain, UAE

Sharjah Police has dismantled a drug trafficking syndicate operating from Canada to Spain and into the UAE, following a major cross-border operation. A total of 131 kilograms of narcotics and psychoactive substances and nearly 9,945 capsules of controlled medication were seized, while seven suspects were arrested in the UAE, according to WAM. Authorities uncovered a drug trafficking route that began at the Port of Toronto in Canada, passed through Malaga in Spain, and ended at a port in the UAE. They began their investigation after noticing an Arab man, among the arrested, frequently entering the UAE with his wife and children. Surveillance and strategic ambushes led to the discovery of the group's operations and the arrest of the main suspect and his local contacts. Police revealed that the primary suspect used his wife and two children as cover for his illegal activities. He admitted to his role in the operation and said he used 'geo-location drops,' a method of hiding drugs in specific areas for pickup, to distribute the narcotics. Five other suspects, all of Asian nationality, were also arrested after evidence showed they were involved in receiving and distributing the drugs. The seized shipment, found hidden in a container filled with car spare parts, was linked to one of the suspects by name. The suspects are now in the custody of judicial authorities in the UAE. The Ministry of Interior, working closely with international partners, is continuing efforts to track down other members of the syndicate overseas and is taking legal action to break up the network completely, WAM said.

Sharjah boy traumatised after car jumps red light, nearly hits him; police step in to help

Sharjah Police helped reassure a 7-year-old boy after a traffic incident left him in a state of extreme fear. Authorities responded quickly to his mother's report, which stated that the child refused to leave the house due to his mental state. The child, who lives in Khor Fakkan, was crossing through a pedestrian crossing, when a speeding vehicle approached. The vehicle, which had overtaken a red light, almost hit the child. Although the incident caused no bodily harm, the psychological impact was severe, prompting intervention from specialised teams. After receiving the report, authorities headed to the child's residence, giving him the psychological support through positive conversation, gifts and a guided tour by police. This was to help rebuild his confidence in his surroundings, feel secure, and boost his mental stability, said Colonel Dr Walid Khamis Al-Yimahi, Director of the Police Department of the Eastern Region. Legal action was taken against the driver; the vehicle was impounded for 30 days. Passing red lights not only leads to serious accidents, but also leaves profound psychological effects, especially for children, police stressed.
