Belfast Giants strengthen roster with signing of Great Britain defenceman

The GB star, a dual national having been born in Walsall but grown up in Canada, makes the switch from fellow Elite League side Guildford Flames for the new season, joining Brandon Whistle in moving to the SSE Arena during the off-season. A reliable blue-liner, Jones was part of the Grand Slam-winning Sheffield Steelers in the 2023/24 season and has been a mainstay in the Elite League since joining Fife Flyers in 2019, putting up four goals and nine points in 30 games in Kirkcaldy. That preceded a four-season stay in Sheffield, culminating in the Grand Slam two seasons ago, and his performances at the Utilita Arena saw him called up to the GB squad for the first time in 2021, going on to make 33 appearances at international level, 10 of which have come in the World Championships. In the 2024/25 season, the 28-year-old started off in Romania with CSM Corona Brasov, however Jones later moved back to the Flames in mid-season to anchor their defence, scoring three goals and six points in 16 games for Paul Dixon's men. Now the right-shot defenceman brings his talents to Belfast, joining Bo Hanson and Josh Roach in the line-up and providing head coach Adam Keefe with another excellent option on the back end for their Elite League and Challenge Cup title defences.

Former GB international Mosey extends Devils stay

Evan Mosey will return for a third successive campaign with Cardiff Devils in 2025-26, his fifth season in all with the Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL) 36-year-old American first played for the Devils between 2018 and 2020 and was part of the 2019 play-off championship winning the Covid-19 shutdown he played in Germany and France and then spent two seasons with Sheffield Steelers, before returning to the Welsh capital in a defenceman, Mosey also plays as a forward and was Devils' top defensive points scorer last season with eight goals and 31 assists in 66 games. "Evan is one of the most valuable players in the league because of his ability to play both forward and defence at the level he can in either position," said Cardiff managing director Todd Kelman."If we have an injury up front, he can slide into a top six role quite easily because he skates so well." Mosey also played for Nottingham Panthers and in Denmark before his first spell with the Devils, and won 42 caps for Great Britain before retiring from international hockey earlier this year."He is a leader for us, on and off the ice and brings a great work ethic every day, whether it is a game or training," said Kelman. "He is a huge part of this team, and I am pleased to get him back for another season."Mosey is the fifth player from last season's Devils roster to commit themselves to another year in year's play-off runners-up - now coached by Paul Thompson after the departure of Pete Russell - have also added a new signing in American defenceman Brandon Estes from Danish League side Odense Bulldogs.

No criminal charges over death of ice hockey player Adam Johnson during game

No criminal charges will be brought against a professional ice hockey player arrested on suspicion of manslaughter following the death of fellow player Adam Johnson. Mr Johnson was playing for Nottingham Panthers against Sheffield Steelers when he was hit in the neck by Steelers player Matthew Petgrave's skate in October 2023. The 29-year-old American died in hospital and a post-mortem examination confirmed his cause of death as a neck injury. On Tuesday, the Crown Prosecution Service decided it would not bring criminal charges against Mr Petgrave, who is Canadian. He spent 17 months on bail after he was arrested in November 2023. Mr Petgrave was rebailed seven times by South Yorkshire Police as the investigation continued. Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor Michael Quinn described the incident as 'shocking and deeply upsetting'. 'The CPS and South Yorkshire Police have worked closely together to determine whether any criminal charges should be brought against the other ice hockey player involved. 'Following a thorough police investigation and a comprehensive review of all the evidence by the CPS, we have concluded that there is not a realistic prospect of conviction for any criminal offence and so there will not be a prosecution. 'Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Adam Johnson.' Mr Johnson's death shocked the ice hockey world after being witnessed by thousands of fans at the arena in Sheffield. In January last year, Sheffield's senior coroner, Tanyka Rawden, suspended her investigation while the police inquiry took its course. It emerged later that Ms Rawden had issued a Prevention of Future Deaths Report to Ice Hockey UK and the English Ice Hockey Association (EIHA) about the use of neck guards in the sport. In the report, the coroner said she was 'sufficiently concerned that deaths may occur in the future if neck guards or protectors are not worn', with the bodies given 56 days to say what action had been taken, or why action had not been taken. Neck guards have been mandatory in the Elite League (EIHL), in which the Nottingham Panthers and Sheffield Steelers compete, since 2024. This followed the International Ice Hockey Federation's decision in December to mandate the use of neck laceration protectors for its competitions.

No Charges, No Closure? Adam Johnson's death leaves fans demanding justice

Adam Johnson lost his life on the ice, but no one is being charged (Image via: Getty Images) It was supposed to be just another night of ice hockey. But on October 28, 2023, something went horribly wrong. Adam Johnson , a 29-year-old American player for the Nottingham Panthers , suffered a fatal neck injury during a game against the Sheffield Steelers . A skate blade caught his throat during a collision and within moments, he was gone. The arena fell silent, fans were in shock, and the video of the incident quickly spread across the world. For many, this wasn't just a freak accident, it was a moment that demanded answers. Now, after months of waiting, British prosecutors have announced: no charges will be filed. Adam Johnson's death: Where do we draw the line between accident and action? Adam Johnson: Ice hockey player's family describe fatal moment Matt Petgrave, the Sheffield player involved in the collision, was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter two weeks after the game. Though his name wasn't released by police, Petgrave confirmed he was under investigation in a fundraiser for his legal costs. After a long review, the Crown Prosecution Service said this week there's not enough evidence for a conviction. 'No realistic prospect,' they said. So that's it, case closed. But for many fans and Johnson's loved ones, it doesn't feel right. The video shows Petgrave's skate lifting unusually high before it struck Johnson. Some call it bad luck. Others believe it was reckless, maybe even avoidable. Even some of Johnson's teammates have spoken out. Victor Björkung, who passed the puck to Johnson moments before the accident, defended Petgrave, saying it wasn't intentional. Still, he was so shaken by what he saw that he left the team. And what about Johnson's fiancée, Ryan Wolfe? They were building a life together. He was studying at Loughborough Business School while chasing his hockey dreams in the UK. Now she's left without answers, just grief and memories. A loss that changed the game In response to Johnson's death, neck guards are now required in English ice hockey. It's a step forward, but it came too late. It often takes tragedy to push change but should it?
