TikTok fined €530m by Ireland's watchdog for sending data to China
Irish data protection authorities have fined TikTok €530million for transferring the European users' personal data to China, following a long investigation. The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) said it examined the lawfulness of TikTok's transfer of personal data of its users in Europe to China. As part of its investigation, it also examined whether the provision of information to users in relation to such transfers met TikTok's transparency requirements as required by the GDPR. The decision also includes an order suspending TikTok's transfers to China if processing is not brought into compliance within this timeframe. Throughout the inquiry, TikTok denied that it stored European users' data on servers located in China. TikTok informed the DPC that this discovery meant it had provided inaccurate information. DPC deputy commissioner Graham Doyle said: 'The GDPR requires that the high level of protection provided within the European Union continues where personal data is transferred to other countries.' Last month TikTok told the DPC of an issue that it had discovered in February 2025 where limited data had been stored on servers in China, contrary to TikTok's evidence to the inquiry. Santiago/Getty Images) 'TikTok's personal data transfers to China infringed the GDPR because TikTok failed to verify, guarantee and demonstrate that the personal data of EEA users, remotely accessed by staff in China, was afforded a level of protection essentially equivalent to that guaranteed within the EU. 'As a result of TikTok's failure to undertake the necessary assessments, TikTok did not address potential access by Chinese authorities to EEA personal data under Chinese anti-terrorism, counter-espionage and other laws identified by TikTok as materially diverging from EU standards.' The DPC submitted a draft decision to the GDPR cooperation mechanism on February 21, as required under Article 60 of the GDPR. Mr Doyle added: 'The DPC is taking these recent developments regarding the storage of EEA User Data on servers in China very seriously. 'Whilst TikTok has informed the DPC that the data has now been deleted, we are considering what further regulatory action may be warranted, in consultation with our peer EU Data Protection Authorities.' U.S. FDA Approves China-Produced Cancer Drug

Akeso said on Thursday it has received approval for treatments with penpulimab-kcqx, which is used in the fight against nasopharyngeal cancer, or NPC. In a separate announcement, the drug co-developer Sino Biopharmaceutical also noted FDA approval of the marketing of penpulimab. NPC, a type of head and neck cancer, starts in the nasopharynx, the upper part of the throat behind the nose and near the base of skull, according to a description by the American Cancer Society. Cancer starts when cells begin to grow out of control, it noted. China, the world's most populous nation, had a reported 3.2 million new cancer cases last year. A large number of cases has made the country one of the world's most important markets for cancer drugs. Rare in most parts of the world, NPC is more common in certain parts of South Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa. In some parts of China there have been as many as 21 cases per 100,000 people, the American Cancer Society has said. A Jeopardy! contestant has gone viral after fans of the show pointed out his resemblance a beloved character from The Big Bang Theory. In two episodes that aired on April 18 and April 21, an undergraduate student caught the attention of viewers for his appearance in addition to his quick wit, which saw him claiming the winner title. After emerging triumphant in Final Jeopardy!, the newly minted champion returned for Monday night's episode — where he, once again, caught the attention of viewers for his striking appearance. Liam Starne, a student at the University of Chicago residing in Illinois, won Final Jeopardy and the two-day champ ended the episode by taking home $52,802. Most notably, however, many fans of the syndicated game show took to social media after the episode aired and pointed out that the student named Liam Starnes looked like their favorite wunderkind physicist from the hit sitcom — Sheldon Cooper.
