Tracking Kansas wind speeds amid crashes, poor visibility

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The weather is causing problems for drivers on some Kansas roads, blowing a semitrailer over on Interstate 70 and causing poor visibility due to blowing dust. The KSN Storm Track 3 team is tracking the wind speeds. 'If you're driving through Trego County this morning, you're going to encounter blowing dust,' Trooper Tod Hileman, Kansas Highway Patrol, said. 'Slow down and turn your headlights on. KS law requires headlights if the visibility is less than 1,000 ft.' He shared a video of the blowing dust making it difficult to see very far in front of his patrol vehicle. A few minutes later, he announced that the semi had blown over on I-70 near Brewster. There was also a two-vehicle crash on Highway 50 in Kearny County. Officials said blowing dirt there made conditions hazardous. Snow, some rain, and high winds through Tuesday 'Please, if you don't have to be out today, then don't,' Kearny County Fire Rescue said. 'If you do have to be out, remember while driving through the blowing dust to keep going, turn your hazards on and watch your mirrors.' The Lane County Sheriff's Office posted a message saying that travel conditions are hazardous for high-profile vehicles. Morton County law enforcement is asking that people not go out unless absolutely necessary, because the wind 'can be extremely dangerous.' Tax agents seize two Kansas Mexican restaurants for failure to pay $200,000 Depending on where you are in Kansas, you may encounter blowing snow instead of blowing dust.
