Body of 77-year-old woman found in Bedok flat after neighbour living downstairs notices blood dripping from ceiling, Singapore News

A 77-year-old woman living alone in Bedok was found dead in her flat after a family living in the unit below discovered blood seeping through their ceiling. The incident occurred at Block 163 Bedok South Road on Sunday (May 25) afternoon, reported Shin Min Daily News, who had received a reader tip-off on the multiple police vehicles below the block. A Shin Min reporter, who arrived at the scene at about 4pm, noticed a foul smell lingering in the corridor. A 70-year-old woman surnamed Zeng, who lives in the flat below, told the Chinese evening daily that her son had seen blood dripping from the ceiling of their master bedroom. 'I smelt a foul odour. We realised something was not right and went upstairs,' the neighbour recalled. They found the dead woman's sister outside the flat and asked her to call the police. Zeng's husband, surnamed Ou, added that they will temporarily sleep in their guest room as they cannot bear the stench. A neighbour living on the same floor as the woman told Shin Min she knew the latter as Nancy. According to her, the woman's elder sister had visited the flat at 10am on Sunday to find Nancy, but nobody came to the door. The sister then returned home to search for keys to the flat but could not find them. The sister then asked a locksmith for help, but the latter reportedly told her he could not help after he smelt the foul odour. Zeng subsequently arrived to inform them of the dripping fluid, and the police was called. Another male neighbour living on the same floor as Nancy said his wife had seen a pack of food hanging on the door on Friday. The packet was still there when he passed by on Saturday. In response to media queries, the police said a 77-year-old woman was found lying motionless in the residential unit at Block 163 Bedok South Road and pronounced dead at scene by a paramedic from the Singapore Civil Defence Force. Based on preliminary investigations, no foul play is suspected. Police investigations are ongoing. [[nid:718150]]

Man seeks apology from cyclist who slapped son after collision at Tampines junction, Singapore News

After his son was slapped in a road rage incident, this father isn't too keen on turning the other cheek. The father is now seeking an apology from a man who struck his 13-year-old son after the two — on bicycles — collided with each other at a traffic junction in Tampines, Shin Min Daily News reported on Thursday (May 8). The teenager was attempting to cross a traffic junction along Tampines Ave 7 and 12 last Friday (May 2) around 5.45pm, according to a video post of the incident uploaded to SG Road Vigilante's Facebook page the following day. Mid-crossing, the teen appeared to struggle with the bicycle and didn't seem to notice the oncoming adult cyclist approaching from the opposite end of the junction. While the adult cyclist managed to stop in time, the teenager did not and jerkily moved forward, colliding with the man. In response, the man abruptly slapped the teen, causing both of them to stumble briefly before they continued on their paths. Speaking with Shin Min, the teenager's father, surnamed Qiu (transliteration), shared on Wednesday that his son had cycled away because the crossing light was turning red. "My son was out riding a bicycle with his friends at the time," he recalled. "They were all scared afterwards, and my son's friends called me immediately to inform me of the situation." Having just gotten off work, Qiu took a taxi to the junction and saw that his son's left ear was red and swollen, he told the Chinese paper. "I immediately called the police and took my son to the hospital for a check-up. Fortunately, the doctor said that there was only bruising and it's nothing serious." Qiu stressed that the collision was an accident on his son's part, adding that the man didn't just slap his son, but also swore at him. He hopes to receive an apology from the cyclist. Qiu further revealed that his son had been left traumatised from the encounter and has been having nightmares, affecting his sleep. The teen had also fallen ill with fever as a result, requiring two days of medical leave from school, Qiu claimed. "I've found a psychologist and want him to receive counselling, but it's very expensive," said Qiu, who has advised his son not to go out alone if he's still fearful. Hoping to get a clearer picture of the man's face, Qiu told the Chinese evening daily that he'd tried to obtain CCTV footage of the incident from the management of a nearby condominium but was turned down. Responding to queries from AsiaOne, the police confirmed that a report has been lodged and that investigations are ongoing. [[nid:717607]] khooyihang@

Bed bugs crawl out of AMK flat; residents stock up on insecticide

Residents were plagued by bed bugs constantly coming from a neighbour's unit whose occupant has been hospitalised for weeks. The incident happened at Block 420 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10, a block of rental flats. Mr Zhang, 40, told Shin Min Daily News that the infestation of bed bugs crawled along the corridor on April 13. Many of them entered his flat and crawled on the walls, sofa and bed. "I checked and found that the bed bugs were pouring out of a neighbour's unit on the same floor," he said. "The bed bugs even entered the next-door units and the facing flat." The man living in the unit was reportedly hospitalised after a fall and hasn't been home since then. When a Shin Min reporter visited the block, there were many dead bed bugs in front of the door of the unit, and water stains on the corridor. At least seven neighbouring units were affected by the infestation. The bed bugs entered the homes of neighbours through door seams and windows. PHOTO: SHIN MIN DAILY NEWS Madam Jie Ya, 58, who lives opposite the unit, told the Chinese daily that the largest number of bed bugs she had seen at home on one occasion was about 50 of them, and some were laying eggs on her furniture. "The bed bugs crawled onto the bed and bit me. I couldn't sleep for a few days and I had to take days off." She admitted that she poured water on the corridor to prevent bed bugs from crawling into her house, and she also stuffed towels in the door seams to block their passage, but her efforts were in vain. Madam Artie, 50, who lives below the unit, revealed that her skin felt itchy some time ago, and she later found many bed bugs in her home. She believed that they crawled into the house through the window. Mr Zhang shared that bed bugs require a specific insecticide: "The usual ones don't work on them. After my family discovered that, we bought our neighbours insecticide for bed bugs." Madam Jiang Huiqing, 78, who lives next to the unit, said she spent a few hundred dollars on insecticides. Another neighbour, Madam Zhou Yufeng, 69, bought five cans and finished four cans in three days: "We sprayed all the areas, including the corridor and lift." Madam Jiang said that the authorities fumigated the affected areas two weeks ago and cleaned the man's unit last week after obtaining his permission. She noted that the situation improved after the fumigation and many rounds of cleaning.
