Woman injured after PMD collision in Pasir Ris, lodges police report, Singapore News

A woman was left with cuts and bruises after she was allegedly knocked over by a Personal Mobility Device (PMD) rider on an overhead bridge in Pasir Ris. In a post to the Complaint Singapore Facebook page on July 13, user Mel Yap stated that the incident occurred that morning at around 7.15am near Block 124, Pasir Street 11. Calling it a "hit and run", she wrote that she had been walking downslope on the bridge when the PMD collided into her. She also called for the rider to apologise. "If [the] rider comes forward and apologises and compensates my bills (with receipt), I won't pursue further," she wrote on Facebook, with accompanying photos showing the injuries she sustained to her right palm, left elbow and right knee. She made a police report later. In an interview with Shin Min Daily News, the 49-year-old woman accountant described how she and her friends had been walking on the overhead bridge when she heard a sound from behind. She turned and saw a man who looked to be in his 20s on his PMD. Although Yap and her friends were walking in a single file, the path was narrow. The man did not pass immediately and appeared to be waiting for them to give way to him, said Yap. Yap said she told the rider to dismount from the PMD and push his device, as she believed PMDs should not be ridden on overhead bridges. Fell backwards, then forwards Yap claimed that not only did the rider ignore her advice to dismount, he also tried to squeeze past the group. In the process, a part of the PMD allegedly hit Yap, causing her to fall. "I fell backwards, but as he didn't stop, I tried to grab him and fell forwards," said Yap. "I shouted at him but he ignored me and left." Yap told Shin Min that as the path was strewn with small rocks, she ended up scraping her elbows, palms and knees, which bled. After cleaning her wounds with water, she went to a clinic before making a police report. Yap said that her medical bill cost $150 and the wound on her right knee continued to bleed after 12 hours. Although her injuries were not serious, she was issued two days of medical leave and she said her body was still aching. She reiterated that she is willing to drop the case if the rider comes forward to apologise, stating that he "should have a sense of responsibility". "There are often cases of errant riding in the area. The rider should have gotten down to push his device. I'm lucky, but the situation would be more serious if it were an elderly person who fell." In a statement to AsiaOne, police confirmed that a report has been lodged and investigations are ongoing. A photo taken by Shin Min Daily News at the site showed a "no riding" sign at the bridge. In spite of this, the reporter observed at least one cyclist or personal mobility device user crossing the overpass every two to three minutes. According to the Land Transport Authority guidelines, PMDs such as e-scooters are only allowed on cycling paths while e-bikes can only be used on cycling paths and on the road. Toddler gets 12 stitches on tongue after fall at preschool; mother claims school downplayed injury

A one-year-old girl had to undergo surgery and receive 12 stitches on her tongue after a fall at her preschool - an incident her mother claims was downplayed by the school. The child, Lisa, was enrolled at Little Footprints Preschool's branch in Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5. According to Shin Min Daily News, the incident occurred on July 3. Her mother, Ms Renny Izzatie, a 35-year-old tutor, said she was notified by a teacher around 12.43pm that Lisa had fallen while playing alone and had bitten her tongue. "The teacher said the bleeding had stopped, and my daughter had stopped crying, so I assumed the injury was minor," Ms Renny said. No further details were given, and Lisa was even allowed to continue napping. When Ms Renny arrived to pick her up around 2pm, the teacher apologised, and Lisa appeared calm. It was only during the car ride home that she inspected her daughter's mouth and discovered a deep gash on her tongue. When she asked the school for more details, she was told Lisa had fallen on her bottom, reported Shin Min. She requested to view CCTV footage, but the school said it would review the footage internally and update her on its findings. "The so-called 'minor injury' turned out to be very serious," said Ms Renny, adding that Lisa had been crying intermittently. "She would point to her tongue and say: 'Mama, pain'. She would drool, and there was blood in her saliva." Lisa was taken to KK Women's and Children's Hospital later that day, where she underwent a minor operation under general anaesthesia and received 12 stitches. "Seeing her small body on the table just broke me," said Ms Renny in her Instagram stories. Lisa was discharged the next day and is recovering at home. However, Ms Renny said she remains unsure if there will be any long-term effects on her daughter's speech, or the movement and sensation of her tongue. She stressed in her stories that she does not blame the school for the fall itself, acknowledging that accidents can happen. But she was upset about how the incident was handled and has since filed a police report. "They're not medical professionals, so it's not up to them (to decide) what's serious and what's not," she added. What made her more angry was "the fact that they downplayed the whole situation about the fall. They didn't even mention how big or deep the cut was," she said in her story. Ms Renny later said the school had submitted the CCTV footage to the Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA), but she was not allowed to view it. In response to queries from Shin Min, the police confirmed that a report was filed and investigations are ongoing. Preschool operator cooperating with ECDA ECDA has launched an investigation into the incident. A spokesman said: "The safety of our children is paramount, and if the investigation reveals any irregularities, appropriate action will be taken against the school or staff." The preschool's parent company, Babilou Family Singapore, said it is cooperating with ECDA but declined to provide further comment. A spokesperson said the school had reached out to the family to offer assistance, and expressed relief that the child was recovering. Mother transfers child to another school Still shaken by the incident, Shin Min said Ms Renny decided to withdraw Lisa from the preschool and enrol her elsewhere. "The school neither informed me of the full extent of her injury nor sent her to the hospital. They clearly did not take it seriously," she said. She added that she had already notified the school of her decision via email.

'Be my boyfriend tonight': Sex workers allegedly soliciting customers near Orchard Road, Singapore News

A group of up to 30 women dressed in revealing clothes have reportedly been hanging out near Orchard Road at night allegedly soliciting business from male passers-by. They have been gathering outside Forum The Shopping Mall about three months ago, according to a tip-off sent to Shin Min Daily News. The anonymous informant claimed that the number of women loitering along the walkway would reach its peak at about 11pm. Most of them would stay till around 1am, with some supposedly staying until 4am. "At the most, there were between 20 to 30 of them, and it is a serious issue," he said. A reporter from the Chinese evening daily who visited the scene spotted about 10 sexily dressed women, believed to be between the ages of 20 and 40, sitting on benches or stairs along the street. The women would approach male passers-by and allegedly flirt with them, initiating physical contact and saying: "Be my boyfriend tonight." According to the reporter, both parties will agree on a price before walking to a nearby bus stop or taxi stand and leaving. The women mainly target foreign tourists. Some migrant workers who walk past also return, but leave after being unable to agree on a price, the report said. When the Shin Min reporter approached one of the women, she reportedly asked for the minimum amount he was willing to pay. She reportedly said that the "base price" starts from $200, and some even charge $350. She also asked where the reporter stayed and said they could go to a nearby hotel when he replied that it was inconvenient. The informant believes the open soliciting may affect Singapore's image, especially since Orchard Road is frequented by tourists. [[nid:687618]]

Man lodges police report after $400 of printed SG60 vouchers used by stranger, Singapore News

When making payments using their SG60 vouchers, an elderly couple was befuddled when told that some of it had already been spent. One of them then approached the police for help and discovered that over half of their $800 in vouchers had allegedly been redeemed by a stranger. Retiree Li, 64, told Shin Min Daily News that he had claimed his SG60 vouchers at a community club in Chinatown on July 2, where staff had printed out the QR codes for his convenience. On July 5, his wife tried using $12 in merchant vouchers to pay but was purportedly told that one $10 voucher had been used. The same thing happened again the next day, when Li tried to make payment with two $10 in supermarket vouchers but was informed that one voucher had been spent. The retiree immediately reported the matter to staff at the community club, who asked if his family members had used the vouchers. "I called my two sons to check again, and they both said they never used it. The staff then suggested that I file a police report," he recalled. [[nid:719561]] With the assistance of an officer at a police station on July 7, Li logged into his Singpass to check the transaction history of the vouchers and reportedly found that his SG60 vouchers had been spent starting July 3. According to Shin Min, $459 in vouchers had been used as of July 12. Of this amount, Li and his wife say they have spent only $42. The Chinatown resident noted that many of his merchant vouchers had been spent at shops far from where he lives, including at Redhill Food Centre, Old Airport Food Centre and a Chinese medical hall in Jalan Kukoh. Li added that he had attempted to track down the unknown person who once used the vouchers at a Chinatown shop, but the staff had said only the authorities could view their CCTV footage. The man stressed that the printed vouchers are safekept by him and his wife, and that they had never claimed them online or shared the voucher links. "We don't know how someone obtained and used (our) vouchers," he said. The police confirmed that a report has been lodged and investigations are ongoing. [[nid:719869]]

'He was jealous': Woman allegedly slashed with knife for chatting with 2 men below Jurong West block, Singapore News

A woman suffered facial wounds after a man allegedly attacked her with a knife at the void deck of a Jurong West block. The incident occurred at Block 965 Jurong West Street 93 at about 6.40pm on Thursday (July 10), reported Shin Min Daily News. A reporter from the Chinese evening daily at the scene saw police officers identifying evidence, which included a fruit knife. It was reported that the woman's face was covered in blood and sported two forehead wounds, with one cut about four centimetres long. A male victim also suffered minor head injuries. Responding to AsiaOne's queries, the police confirmed they had received a call for assistance, and that a 64-year-old man and a 43-year-old woman sustained minor injuries but refused to be taken to hospital. A 66-year-old man sustained minor injuries and was conscious when taken to the hospital. He was subsequently arrested for voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapon and suspected drug-related offences. Police seized two knives as case exhibits, and the suspected drug-related offences have been referred to the Central Narcotics Bureau. Investigations are ongoing. Attacker was jealous: Female victim In an interview with Shin Min, the 43-year-old woman said she was talking to two men at the void deck when they were allegedly attacked. "He was jealous of me chatting with other men, so he took a knife and hurt me and one of the men I was talking to," she claimed. The other man in the trio, who escaped unhurt, said the elderly alleged attacker became angry after seeing them together and had tried to pull the woman away. "The uncle went home, hid the knife under his shirt, and returned to attack the (first) man chatting with us before slashing (the woman)," alleged the 62-year-old, who is wheelchair-bound. He added that it was fortunate the two victims suffered only superficial injuries and were not stabbed. The police apprehended the attacker at his home, according to the report. Residents told Shin Min they had seen the woman and the alleged attacker entering and leaving the same residential unit but were uncertain of their relationship. The uninjured man said he thought the two were a couple. But the woman denied they were in a relationship, saying that they were "neighbours". [[nid:709871]]
