Shivakumar's early exit casts shadowon Karnataka chief minister's show of strength in Mysuru

Mysuru: A high-profile Congress convention meant to showcase chief minister Siddaramaiah 's political might in Mysuru was marred by the conspicuous early departure of deputy CM DK Shivakumar , adding fuel to ongoing speculation about growing rifts within the party's state leadership. Held at the historic Maharaja's College Grounds Saturday, the Sadhana Samavesha was intended to be a grand celebration of the Congress govt's two and a half years of performance. However, Shivakumar's abrupt exit—soon after delivering a brief speech and before Siddaramaiah's address—drew attention away from the event's message and onto the internal dynamics of the governing party. His exit came while Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge was addressing the crowd, and before Siddaramaiah took the centrestage. The move left many party workers and attendees surprised and disappointed. Siddaramaiah made no effort to conceal his displeasure. When the audience shouted for Shivakumar to be named during his speech, the chief minister responded curtly: "I will only take the names of people who are on the dais, not those who have left. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Dementia Has Been Linked To a Common Habit. Do You Do It? Memory Health Learn More Undo I have referred to the names of the dignitaries who are on the dais. Since Shivakumar has left for Bengaluru, I have left out his name," Siddaramaiah said in a pointed remark that underlined the simmering tensions within the state's Congress leadership. Adding to the intrigue, Shivakumar was also scheduled to attend a dinner hosted by Chamarajanagar MP Sunil Bose. However, he cancelled that plan too. "Shivakumar planned to visit our home for lunch. He informed me that he needed to return to Bengaluru early," Bose told TOI. According to sources close to the deputy chief minister, Shivakumar was suffering from a mild fever. Still, his sudden departure and failure to inform the crowd about it did not go unnoticed. Despite the distraction, Siddaramaiah appeared in full command of the stage. In a dramatic entry, he walked down a specially erected ramp at the centre of the venue—departing from the usual protocol of entering from the left side of the dais. He was showered with flower petals as he moved through cheering supporters holding up his portraits. Though Shivakumar and Kharge, were also present earlier, Siddaramaiah hogged all the limelight as he led the walk alone, soaking in the crowd's enthusiasm. BJP, JD(S) spreading lies: Siddaramaiah Addressing a massive gathering that consisted largely of minority supporters, Siddaramaiah launched a scathing attack on BJP and JD(S), accusing them of spreading misinformation about his govt. Highlighting the Congress' five guarantee schemes, he alleged that all BJP-governed states are copying them. He also threw the gauntlet to the opposition BJP-JD(S), challenging them to a public debate on the Congress govt's achievements. "Let them come and debate openly. The development under our govt is the ultimate rebuttal to their web of lies," Siddaramaiah said. The CM's rally echoed a similar event held on Aug 9 last year at the same venue. The 2024 event was intended to counter the BJP-JDS padayatra over the Muda scam and to reassert Siddaramaiah's political clout in his home turf of Mysuru.

Karnataka's guarantee schemes now a national model: Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Saturday said that the five guarantee schemes of the State government have become a model for the entire country, and accused the BJP of copying the same in other states. 'Our popular guarantee schemes are now a model. The BJP called our schemes a big lie, and even the Prime Minister said that Karnataka would go bankrupt if they were implemented. But today, the same party has copied our schemes in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, and now in Bihar,' said Mr. Shivakumar, addressing the gathering at the 'Sadhana Samavesha' in Mysuru. Taking a dig at the BJP and the JD(S) for their constant criticism of the Congress government, he said, 'Our work will speak. So, we don't give a heed to their criticism and continue to work for the people and the State, fulfilling promises we have made.' 'Congress has silenced critics' Stating that the Congress has silenced the Opposition parties with its works, Mr. Shivakumar said the 'hasta' (party's hand symbol) has given strength to women through guarantees. 'The government has given a befitting reply to its critics with its works. Each family gets around ₹5,000 a month through guarantees, ensuring financial stability,' he noted. 'Prosperity to State' The Deputy Chief Minister said that besides bringing development, the Congress party has brought prosperity to the State. 'Thanks to good rains, 'bagina' was offered to Krishnaraja Sagar in June, which is historic since it happened after a gap of 90 years. Tomorrow, we are offering 'bagina' to Kabini, which is also full,' he added. Continuing his tirade against the opposition, Mr. Shivakumar said that the BJP and the JD(S) could not organise 'Sadhana Samaveshas' as they could not fulfil promises like the Congress. 'Along with guarantees, we are implementing development works, and the 'samaveshas' speak of our resolve,' he argued. 'The 'samaveshas' are nothing but a way of repaying our debt to the people for electing this government. We are indebted to them,' he added. Development works Clarifying that the government has money for development works, Mr. Shivakumar dismissed accusations of the Opposition regarding the same. 'We launched works worth ₹5,000 crore in Kalyana Karnataka, and also in Indi this week. We announced works worth ₹3,000 crore during the Cabinet meeting in M.M. Hills, and today, in Mysuru, we are launching works worth ₹2,578 crore. Is this not development?' he said. The Deputy Cheif Minister that said government schools are being developed with CSR funds of nearly ₹2,000 crore. 'Elect us in 2028' Mr. Shivakumar concluded his speech by urging the people to bring Congress back to power in 2028 so that the party continues to work for them and fulfil their aspirations. 'Please elect us with a massive majority in 2028. The by-election results last year showed the people's faith in the party,' he said.

Siddaramaiah Rejects CM Change Buzz, Shivakumar Backs Him In Karnataka Govt's 'All's Well' Pitch

Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah hit back at BJP for saying there will be change in leadership, said, "I will be the Chief Minister for five years." Pushing aside the speculations of leadership change in Karnataka, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday made it clear that he intends to serve the full five-year term in office. 'Yes, I will continue as Chief Minister. Why do you have doubts?" Siddaramaiah said amid claims that a possible change in the leadership might occur in Karnataka. 'Are they the Congress high command?" he asked, attacking the BJP and JD(S) for claiming that there is an internal rift in the Congress in the state. Siddaramaiah's reaction came amid questions over the future of the Congress-led administration in Karnataka. It was claimed that the Chief Minister's deputy, DK Shivakumar, might replace him as the party is facing internal rift. The Chief Minister had earlier as well trashed the buzz, stating that the Congress government will remain 'as solid as a rock" for the five-year term. 'This government will be as solid as a 'bande' (rock) for five years," the Chief Minister said, with Shivakumar on his side. When the media had asked him about his ties with Shivakumar, Siddaramaiah held his deputy's hand to show unity and said, 'We are on good terms." Further responding to the speculations, he added, 'We don't listen to what others say." Shivakumar, who is also the state Congress president, cleared the air over the ongoing guesswork and said that party discipline is of utmost importance and said that he has not asked anyone to make him the Chief Minister. He further warned that notices will be issued to leaders who make public statements on the leadership change in Karnataka. Shivakumar distanced himself from speculation that he is seeking to replace Siddaramaiah, saying, 'What option do I have? I have to stand by him and support him. I don't have any objection to it. Whatever the party high command tells and whatever they decide, it will be fulfilled." 'When there is a Chief Minister, there is no question of such statements. Many have worked for the party; it's not just me. Lakhs of party workers have toiled for the party, let's first think of them," the Deputy Chief Minister said. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
