Nagaland records steep rise in GST revenue
Dimapur: Nagaland recorded a sharp rise in GST revenue, with 104% jump in June alone. The state tax department celebrated this milestone at the commissioner of taxes office in Dimapur, reporting a sharp rise in GST revenue owing to sweeping internal reforms and intensified enforcement measures, an official release said on Monday. In a remarkable year-on-year comparison, the department has posted a 43% increase in April, 44% in May, and an astounding 104% in June 2025. Petroleum revenue also saw a substantial 31% rise in the first quarter of FY 2025-26. The department credits these gains to structural improvements, skill development initiatives, adoption of best practices, and a revamp of enforcement mechanisms. To further support enforcement efforts, additional chief secretary and finance commissioner Sentiyanger Imchen flagged off four new vehicles. These will aid field mobility and enhance outreach across the state. Abhinav Shivam, commissioner Of state taxes, expressed appreciation to the state govt for supporting the department's operational needs. "The addition of these vehicles is a much-needed boost. It will help us plan and execute field operations more effectively," he said. Shivam also lauded the tireless efforts of tax officers and the business community's growing compliance. "The surge in tax collection is proof that Nagaland is adapting swiftly to the changing GST landscape," Shivam said. "Our officials are second to none in the country."

Sonu Sood Sends ₹1.5 Lakh To South Actor's Family After His Death
Sonu Sood extended financial help to late actor Fish Venkat's family after his death due to kidney failure. Tollywood actor and comedian Venkat Raj, aka Fish Venkat, passed away on July 18 in Hyderabad due to kidney-related issues. He was 53 and undergoing dialysis while admitted to the ICU. His family had been seeking financial help for his kidney transplant, needing around Rs 50 lakh. Sadly, Venkat died before they could secure the funds. Venkat had worked in several Telugu films like Adhurs, Gabbar Singh, Shivam, and Khaidi No 150. His last appearance was in the 2024 film Coffee with a Killer. Sonu Sood Steps In to Support the Family After hearing about the tragic news, actor Sonu Sood came forward to help Venkat's grieving family. He immediately transferred Rs 1.50 lakh to them as a token of support and also spoke to Venkat's wife and relatives on a phone call. According to Sonu's team, he initially hoped Venkat was still in the hospital and could recover. However, he was 'shocked to know" that the actor had already passed away. Sonu also personally spoke to Venkat's wife and other family members over a phone call, and assured them that he would support them whenever needed, as per Hindustan Times. Venkat's wife, who was deeply moved by the gesture, felt relieved as her husband had always admired Sonu, Hindustan Times also states. Confusion Over Prabhas' Alleged Donation There were earlier reports that actor Prabhas had offered Rs 50 lakh for Venkat's kidney transplant. The family later clarified that they never received the amount. 'Some unknown person called us pretending to be Prabhas Anna's assistant. We found out after that it was a fake call. He doesn't even know something like this is happening. We have not received any financial help yet," a family member shared as quoted by The Free Press Journal. Before Venkat's passing, actors like Vishwak Sen and Pawan Kalyan had also reportedly stepped up to help. Pawan had reportedly donated a sum upon hearing about Venkat's condition. Despite the delay in aid, the support shown by the film community, especially Sonu Sood, brought some comfort to the family during this difficult time. Husband held for killing pregnant wife in Bengaluru
BENGALURU: A 20-year-old painter from Uttar Pradesh has been arrested for killing his pregnant wife at their rented house in Thanisandra under Hennur police station limits. The accused reportedly spent two days with his wife's body, during which he cooked egg bhurji and consumed alcohol beside it. The house owner alerted police on Thursday after noticing a foul smell due to the decomposing body. Hennur police registered a murder case and arrested the accused shortly after receiving the complaint. The deceased has been identified as Sumana. Her husband, Shivam Sahane, who was absconding, was arrested later. Shivam hails from Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh. The couple had been married for six months and often quarrelled due to Shivam's alcohol addiction. According to police, during a fight on Monday, Shivam slapped Sumana, after which they slept separately. Sumana, who slept in the bedroom, reportedly died that night. Shivam, unaware of her death, left for work on Tuesday morning and discovered her body upon returning home. Instead of informing authorities, he prepared egg bhurji and ate beside the body while drinking alcohol. He later considered disposing of the body but abandoned the idea for fear of getting caught. On Wednesday morning, he fled the house. N Mahesh, 32, the house owner, informed the police on Thursday after detecting the foul smell. 'The woman is suspected to have died three days ago. There were no external injuries on the body. However, bleeding from the nose could be due to a hard slap,' an officer said. A case of murder under BNS 103(1) has been registered against Shivam. Further investigations are underway.
