Ghaziabad cops open DME for morning rush, close Delhi lanes by noon again

Noida: In a day marked by traffic flip-flops, the Delhi-Meerut Expressway's (DME) carriageway to the capital witnessed an unusual pattern of closures on Tuesday, as cops juggled between managing the kanwar pilgrim rush and addressing commuter woes during peak hours. Traffic police initially shut the carriageway early on Tuesday morning, blocking entry points at Khoda, ABES College, Crossings Republik, Dasna, and Bhojpur. However, facing pressure from office-goers during rush hour, the cops temporarily reopened the expressway between 10am and noon, only to close it again as pilgrim numbers swelled. The closure forced Delhi-bound traffic onto NH-9 — running parallel to DME — resulting in significant congestion. The situation affected regular commuters to Delhi who depend on the expressway for their travel. While we initially restricted light vehicle movement from Tuesday morning, we had to temporarily relax the curbs when numerous office-goers pleaded access citing work commitments," said Ziauddin Ahmad, ACP (traffic) in Ghaziabad. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Dubai villas | search ads Get Deals Undo The restrictions, reimposed from noon, are expected to continue through Wednesday, with authorities monitoring pilgrim numbers for possible relaxation. While light showers provided some relief by keeping traffic volumes low, congestion persisted at DME exit points in Noida and Ghaziabad, where pilgrims merging onto city roads created bottlenecks. At Model Town crossing, groups of pilgrims, many dancing to DJ music, added to the traffic slowdown as they entered Noida. Among the pilgrims was Arjun Singh from New Ashok Nagar in Delhi, who made the journey to Haridwar on motorcycle. "The journey is long, but the spirit of devotion keeps us going. The chants of 'Har Har Mahadev' echo throughout, making the journey easy," he said. Kanwar pilgrims typically use three major routes in Ghaziabad — a 25km stretch along Pipeline Road from Loni Border to Niwari, a 42.5km route from Kadrabad to UP Gate via GT Road, and the DME, which remains popular among 'Dak Kanwariyas' — pilgrims using vehicles from western Uttar Pradesh to Haridwar and back. On Monday too, all expressway entry points were closed around 11.30am but were opened after an hour due to limited pilgrim presence and mounting traffic snarls.

Sawan Shivratri 2025: Check Date, Puja Timings, Vrat Vidhi, History, Significance, Rituals, And More

Sawan Shivratri, one of the most spiritually significant festivals for Lord Shiva devotees, will be observed on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, during the sacred month of Shravan (Sawan). This divine occasion falls on the 14th day of the Krishna Paksha (waning phase of the moon) in the month of Shravan according to the Hindu lunar calendar. Celebrated with unwavering devotion, this sacred night is marked by fasting, night-long vigils, chanting, and the ceremonial worship of Lord Shiva's lingam. Unlike Maha Shivratri, which falls in February or March and celebrates the union of Shiva and Shakti, Sawan Shivratri is observed within the highly auspicious Shravan month, a time believed to be especially sacred to Shiva. Sawan Shivratri 2025: Key Dates & Timings As per Drik Panchang, here are the exact timings for the rituals: ► Sawan Shivratri Date: Wednesday, July 23, 2025 ► Nishita Kaal Puja Time: 12:07 AM to 12:48 AM, July 24 ► Duration: 41 minutes ► Shivratri Parana Time (Breaking Fast): 5:38 AM, July 24 ► Ratri First Prahar Puja: 07:17 PM – 09:53 PM ► Second Prahar: 09:53 PM – 12:28 AM ► Third Prahar: 12:28 AM – 03:03 AM ► Fourth Prahar: 03:03 AM – 05:38 AM ► Chaturdashi Tithi Begins: 4:39 AM, July 23 ► Chaturdashi Tithi Ends: 2:28 AM, July 24 For devotees observing the vrat (fast), the Parana (fast-breaking) is scheduled for 5:38 AM on July 24, 2025. Why Is Sawan Shivratri So Important? In Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva is known as the destroyer of evil and the supreme yogi who lives in deep meditation. The month of Shravan is considered extremely sacred to him. It is believed that the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean) took place during this month, during which Shiva consumed the deadly poison Halahala to save the universe. In return, the gods and devotees started observing rituals to honor and pacify Shiva, thus giving rise to Shravan celebrations. Sawan Shivratri is one such observance, revered especially in North Indian states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Punjab. Shiva temples across India, including Kashi Vishwanath and Badrinath Dham, see a massive influx of devotees performing Gangajal Abhishekam, night-long vigils, and Vedic rituals during this time. Sawan Shivratri Vrat Vidhi (Fasting Rules) 1. Preparation: On the day before Shivratri, i.e., Trayodashi, devotees usually consume a single meal. 2. Morning Rituals: On Shivratri day, they wake early, take a bath, and perform Sankalp (resolution) to fast for the day and night in honor of Shiva. 3. Evening Bath: A second bath is taken in the evening before visiting a temple or beginning the Shiv Puja at home. 4. Night-long Worship: Shiva is worshipped in four prahars of the night with Abhishekam (offering of holy substances like milk, honey, ghee, Gangajal) and the chanting of 'Om Namah Shivaya.' 5. Breaking the Fast: The fast is broken the next morning between sunrise and the end of Chaturdashi Tithi, usually after taking a bath. Some devotees observe a Nirjala Vrat, where they refrain from both food and water, and spend the night chanting and meditating on Shiva's divine energy. Rituals That Define the Night of Shiva 1. Abhishekam: Bathing the Shiva Linga with water, milk, yogurt, honey, ghee, and Gangajal. 2. Bilva Leaves Offering: Offering bilva leaves, considered sacred to Lord Shiva. 3. Lighting Diyas: Lighting lamps and incense to please Lord Shiva. 4. Reciting Shiva Mantras: Chanting 'Om Namah Shivaya' and other Vedic mantras. 5. Jagran & Bhajans: Staying up all night singing bhajans and meditating on Shiva. 6. Charity and Dakshina: Donating food, clothes, or money to Brahmins or the needy. Sawan Shivratri Vs Maha Shivratri While both festivals honour Lord Shiva, they occur in different lunar months and have unique historical significance. Many confuse Sawan Shivratri with Maha Shivratri, but they are distinct. Sawan Shivratri falls in the month of Shravan (July–August) and is one of the monthly Shivratris, revered especially during the monsoon for its spiritual intensity. Maha Shivratri, however, is the most important of all Shivratris and is celebrated in February–March during the Phalguna month. Both festivals honour Lord Shiva, but Sawan Shivratri is believed to be especially potent for fulfilling wishes, inner purification, and divine blessings. Regional Celebrations and Temple Rituals ► Most Celebrated In: Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Uttarakhand. Famous Temples with Grand Celebrations: ► Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Varanasi ► Mahakaleshwar, Ujjain ► Badrinath Dham, Uttarakhand ► Kedarnath Temple In these regions, devotees pour Gangajal over the Shiva Lingam, believing it purifies the soul and grants moksha. School Holiday: Several UP, MP Schools To Remain Closed On July 23 Due To Sawan Shivratri

Last Updated: School Holiday: The decision to close schools on Sawan Shivratri and Mondays is based on expected crowding, traffic jams, and security concerns during the Kanwar Yatra. The month of Sawan is considered a sacred period dedicated to Lord Shiva. In 2025, Sawan commenced on July 11 and will continue until August 9. During this time, Mondays are significant, and Sawan Shivratri holds particular importance. Due to anticipated traffic disruptions caused by crowds at temples and the Kanwar Yatra, many schools in UP and MP have declared holidays. This year, Sawan Shivratri will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 23, 2025. This day holds great religious significance. To manage the heavy crowd and traffic on Kanwar Yatra and Shivratri, schools and colleges in many North Indian states will remain closed. — In Meerut and Muzaffarnagar, all schools and colleges will be closed till tomorrow, July 23, with strict penalties for violations of the order. — In Bareilly, schools and colleges within a 5 km radius of the Delhi-Badaun road will be closed on every Monday of Sawan (July 14, 21, 28 and August 4). — In Badaun, schools from class 1 to 8 will be on holiday on Saturdays and Mondays (July 19-21, July 26-28, August 2-4), with mandatory attendance for teachers. — In Varanasi, schools will close every Monday of Sawan, with classes held on Sundays. — In Jabalpur, a school holiday is declared on July 21. — In Ujjain, schools will close every Monday from July 14 to August 11, with compensatory classes held on Sundays, due to the crowds at Mahakaleshwar temple. — In Noida, most schools in Noida and Ghaziabad of Delhi-NCR will be closed for Sawan Shivratri on July 23, 2025. Sawan Shivratri is a day for worshipping Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati in Hinduism. Devotees offer water, Belpatra, milk, and other items to the Shivling. During the Kanwar Yatra, millions of devotees bring Gangajal from Haridwar, Gangotri, and other pilgrimage sites to offer in Shiva temples. This Yatra leads to congestion and traffic jams, making it difficult for children to commute to schools, hence the closures in sensitive areas. The decision to close schools on Sawan Shivratri and Mondays is based on expected crowding, traffic jams, and security concerns during the Kanwar Yatra. With no-vehicle zones in place in many areas, school buses and children's movement might be affected. Some schools may conduct online classes, and parents are advised to check the school's official notice for updates. view comments First Published: July 22, 2025, 14:10 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
