‘Lost the battle, not the war': Shreyas confident of comeback after 8-wicket thrashing in Qualifier 1

'We have lost the battle, but not the war' — these were straightforward words which came out from Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer after his team was bashed by eight wickets in the Indian Premier League 2025 Qualifier 1 match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, Chandigarh, on Thursday night. Batting first, PBKS, which finished first on the points table first time since 2014, imploded against a potent RCB attack led by Yash Dayal and Josh Hazlewood in the Powerplay. Opener Priyansh Arya fell in just the second over before Bhuvneshwar Kumar dismissed the other opener, Prabhsimran Singh. Hazlewood picked two big scalps of skipper Iyer and in-form Josh Inglis. Eventually, PBKS were bundled out for just 101 in 14.1 overs before RCB romped home chasing the target with 10 overs to remain. Even though PBKS lost the match vs RCB, the Iyer-led PBKS are still not out of the tournament. They will play the winner of the Gujarat Titans vs Mumbai Indians match in the second Qualifier. 'Not a day to forget, but got to go back to the drawing board. We lost a lot of wickets (in the first innings). There's a lot to go back to and study,' said Iyer after the loss. Iyer said he is not going to bother about his decision-making and PBKS failed to execute the planning, which seemed to be spot-on ahead of the game. 'I am not doubting my decisions to be honest. Whatever we did in terms of planning, outside of the ground whatever (planning) we did, I think it was on point. Just that we couldn't execute it on the field,' he said. 'Can't even blame the bowlers, as it was a low total to defend. We've got to work on our batting, especially on this wicket. In all the games we have played here, there has been some variable bounce,' he added. 'We can't give such reasons because we are professionals at the end of the day, and we have to bat according to the situation and we have to live up to it,' said Iyer.

'One rewarded, other punished...': Mohammad Kaif slams BCCI for...

In these collection of pictures, we find out why former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif has slammed BCCI in the middle of the IPL 2025 season. Shreyas Iyer guided Punjab Kings to IPL 2025 Playoffs. PBKS lost to RCB in Qualifier 1 but have chance to reach final by winning Qualifier 2. Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif has slammed BCCI for ignoring Shreyas Iyer for India's five-Test tour of England starting next month. Image credit: X (Formerly Twitter) Mohammad Kaif has criticised dual treatment between Shreyas Iyer and Sai Sudharsan. "Sai Sudharsan is a brilliant player, no doubt. But he was picked in the Test squad after a good IPL season (679 runs and counting)," said Kaif on his YouTube channel. "Iyer, meanwhile, has been doing well for so long. He scored some 550 runs in the 2023 ODI World Cup and in the Champions Trophy as well. He is still doing a terrific job with the bat for Punjab Kings – 514 runs and counting. He is captaining too. So on one hand, you are considering white-ball criteria for one player and not for the other." Shreyas Iyer has scored 516 runs in 15 matches in IPL 2025 season with a strike-rate of 170 with 5 fifties. Shreyas Iyer is 1st captain to lead 3 teams into IPL Playoffs. Apart from PBKS, other two teams are DC and KKR. Gujarat Titans opener Sai Sudharsan has scored 679 runs in IPL 2025 season with 1 hundred and 5 fifties. Sai Sudharsan was retained for Rs 8.5 crore ahead of IPL 2025 mega auction last year. He has earned his maiden call-up to Indian Test side after retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

Shreyas Iyer didn't read the situation, needed to put ego in pocket: Tom Moody

Former Australia cricketer turned commentator Tom Moody feels Shreyas Iyer failed to read the situation well during Punjab Kings' (PBKS) hammering against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in Qualifier 1 of the Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025). PBKS lost the match by eight wickets as RCB bundled them out for the lowest score in IPL playoffs (101) and chased down the target in just 10 being put in to bat first, PBKS were 27/2 in 3 overs when Shreyas Iyer walked in to bat. However, the PBKS skipper got dismissed for just 2 (3), edging Josh Hazlewood to wicketkeeper Jitesh Sharma. Tom Moody analysed Iyer's dismissal and said that the PBKS captain failed to read the situation as he only had to see Hazlewood off.'At times, you need to put your ego in your pocket and just move forward. To me that was the perfect example of not reading the situation. You only had to see Hazlewood out. It was a simple thing – see him out and look to dissect the rest of their attack. The first ball he played and missed – the perfect line that you'd expect Hazlewood to bowl,' said Moody on ESPNCricinfo 'Timeout'.advertisement 'To me, he totally misread the game situation and his own situation. Yes, he would be aware that Hazlewood has had him a few times in the past. He would know the exact numbers. He sort of played at it, but didn't really want to play at it. And then, that third ball he got out,' he has dismissed Iyer four out of six matches as the PBKS batter averages just 3 against him. Despite his poor show in the Qualifier 1, Shreyas Iyer has been in rich form in the ongoing season, having scored 516 runs from 15 innings at an average of 46.90 and a strike rate of 170.86 with five will be eager to bounce back in Qualifier 2 on June 1, where Punjab will face the winner of the Eliminator fixture between Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans, set to be played on June 30 in updated on IPL 2025 with India Today!
