Gita lessons in schools: Reading Uttarakhand's Sanskrit, Sanatan push plan

The Uttarakhand government's plan to introduce the Bhagavad Gita in school curricula is the latest in a series of decisions aimed at promoting Sanskrit and Sanatan education in the BJP-ruled state. Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced at a review meeting with the education department on May 6 that teachings from the Gita would be integrated into school learning. 'Children should be made to study the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita as part of the curriculum,' Dhami said, also directing officials to prepare a 10-year plan for innovation in education. He underscored the need to move towards holistic education under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 while calling for buffing up the syllabus with moral and environmental education, knowledge about Uttarakhand's cultural heritage, historical personalities, folklore and local art form, and regional skill development. Dhami asked the department to prepare a 'silver celebration calendar' of educational activities by December 2026. He instructed that all schools be inspected for infrastructure and safety before the oncoming monsoon. The announcement on Bhagavad Gita is seen as part of a wider push to promote Sanskrit and Sanatan values through education. Last month, the state cabinet approved the Adarsh Sanskrit Gram Yojana, under which one village in each district is to be selected to receive structured Sanskrit language instruction. The scheme aims to bolster the status of Sanskrit as the second official language of the state. Depending on the success of the pilot initiative, it will be expanded to the block level. Financial incentives are already being given to students from Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe communities who opt for Sanskrit as a subject in schools. Parallel to this, the Uttarakhand Waqf Board has taken steps to modernise madrasas by blending religious teachings with mainstream curriculum. In 2023, the board had announced that all registered madrasas would adopt the NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) syllabus, introduce Sanskrit alongside Arabic and English, and implement a dress code. Waqf Board chairman and BJP leader Shadab Shams had recently declared that madrasa students would be taught the story and values of Lord Ram. 'The way the entire country is celebrating the consecration of Shri Ram in Ayodhya, we thought we should teach about Shri Ram in madrasas. There is even a quote attributed to [poet and philosopher] Allama Iqbal in which he refers to Lord Ram as 'Imam-e-Hind (Leader of India)'. Indian Muslims should follow Ram because we are not Arabs. We are converted Muslims, who changed our way of worship. But we cannot change our ancestors,' Shams said. Shams claimed such initiatives would help bridge religious divides, and that modernisation efforts could attract even Hindu students to madrasas and foster interfaith harmony. The Waqf Board is now in the process of transforming four of its madrasas into model institutions under this integrated education framework. Meanwhile, the state government's cultural push is also accompanied by a broader revamp of the education system. Dhami has called for studying best practices from other states to improve residential hostel facilities in cluster schools and ensure better transport for students across 559 such schools. The chief minister also emphasised on timely textbook delivery, promotion of NCC (National Cadet Corps) programmes, and greater transparency in teacher transfers. While pushing for the integration of Sanskrit and moral education, Dhami asked officials to explore partnerships with the private sector to enhance school infrastructure. 'There will be no shortage of resources when it comes to improving the quality of education in Uttarakhand,' he asserted. Subscribe to India Today Magazine
