Woman sheds over five stone in six months and runs 10K
A woman who lost more than five stone in six months has completed the ABP Newport 10K. Sian Jones, a social media specialist and mother of two from Blackwood, achieved this feat after transforming her life and shedding five and a half stone. The 45-year-old was part of the Newport Marathon Festival 100 Club, a scheme by Run 4 Wales that provides 100 free spaces for those looking to improve their physical health and wellbeing. Sian was a size 26 at her heaviest (Image: Run4Wales) At her heaviest, Ms Jones weighed 20st 13lb and wore size 26 clothing. She said: "I was at the doctors having my bloods done in September and the results came back quite bad. "I had high cholesterol, and my diabetes risk was high, they wanted to put me on statins but I didn't want to be on even more medication, so I asked the doctor to give me three months to turn things around." She began eating healthier, managing her portion control, and started going to the gym. She also completed the Couch to 5K programme in October, which she had previously struggled with. She lost five and a half stone and is now a size 18 (Image: Run4Wales) She said: "I'd tried the programme before but had never made it past week five or six but this time I completed it on the treadmill at the gym and managed my first 5K. "I then thought that if I could do a 5K, I could do a 10K and applied to join the 100 Club so I'd have a goal to work towards." Ms Jones has since lost five and a half stone and is now a size 18. She said: "I feel great and I'm much more energetic. "I'm sleeping better too. "I went back to the doctors in February to have my bloods taken again and everything's now at a normal level." Ms Jones completed the ABP Newport 10K on April 13 and is considering a half marathon.

Carlisle salon 'humbled' after nomination for Best Hairdresser 2025 award
We're highlighting the shortlisted hairdressers in our competition in the News & Star. Each of the establishments will be featured over ten issues. Salon Vibe has been nominated by News & Star readers as one of the ten finalists in its 'Best Hairdresser 2025' award. The salon is located on Carlisle's Denton Street and is owned by Sian Jones who opened her business in August 2021 when she was 22 years old. After being informed that Salon Vibe has been chosen by News & Star readers to feature in the final ten of the 'Best Hairdresser 2025' award, Sian was on hand to express her delight. Salon Vibe (Image: Supplied) She said: "It's so humbling to have been nominated for this award, I know that sounds really cheesy but it is really humbling. "Considering the age I was when I opened up the salon, the biggest thing for me was that I started off by myself and built the team up so hearing that feedback is really appreciated. "I specialise in har and when I was opening up the place I had worked in many salons before and I wanted to use my experience to create a really down-to-earth and comfortable place where you can come in your pyjamas if you really wanted to, a home from home. "What I love most about this is that clients become friends and we all muck in and help each other out and it's just an amazing job." (Image: Supplied) Sian also discussed why she believes that her clients enjoy visiting her salon, with her and her team's 'down-to-earth' personas as well as wide range of services playing a key role in this. She said: "I think people obviously like the great work that we do, we have so much fun and have a laugh. We are professional but we are also normal, down-to-earth people and I think people like to see that. "I think a big factor as well is the fact that we offer everything from hair, beauty, aesthetic, teeth, and dog grooming which I think sets us apart from others."
