5 dead in head-on collision on N2 in KZN

The death toll from the horrific head-on collision between a sugar truck and a light motor vehicle on the N2 on Saturday morning has risen to five. The crash, which occurred between Amatigulu and Dokodweni, claimed five lives after emergency personnel revised the scene, The Witness reports. However, according to MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma, the truck driver remains missing. 'It is not clear whether he is under the truck or if he fled the scene. Our highly efficient team from the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) and investigators from the South African Police Service's Accident Unit are currently reconstructing the accident,' said Duma. He said that based on initial reports from RTI, the truck slammed into a light motor vehicle and pushed it to the side of the road. The truck then overturned and crushed the light motor vehicle into pieces. The five victims died instantly and their bodies have been taken to the mortuary. Duma expressed condolences to the victims' families, who are being traced by officials from the department. 'We request family members and friends who are looking for their loved ones who were travelling to an event and did not reach their destination to contact Captain Thambo Shandu at Gingindlovu Police Station,' said Duma. He also urged community members, who had gathered at the crash site with buckets, waiting to loot the sugar, to leave the area immediately, warning that the diesel leak from the overturned truck poses an explosion risk. Horrific collision on KZN north coast claims four lives

Four people were killed in a collision on the N2 between Dokodweni and Amatigulu on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast on Saturday. Department of transport and human settlements spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya said the accident at about 8:30am involved a light motor vehicle and a truck. Transport and human settlements MEC Siboniso Duma was expecting to get an update from the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) on the crash, which claimed the lives of three males and one female, and had sent condolences to the affected families, he said. Sibiya said the accident happened shortly after the MEC issued a statement about a successful multidisciplinary force roadblock which had led to the arrest of scores of motorists for drunk driving, being in possession of stolen vehicles, drugs and other offences. 'The MEC has urged we intensify the no-nonsense Alufakwa and Zero Tolerance approach through the province to save lives and ensure visibility of the Road Traffic Inspectorate, and also sustain the road safety campaign until the end of the year and beyond,' he said.

Scores of motorists arrested in KwaZulu-Natal road safety blitz

AN OFFICER from the KwaZulu-Natal Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) puts handcuffs on one of the motorists who were arrested in last night's road safety blitz for various violations ranging from driving under the influence of alcohol and illegal possession of firearms. A late-night road safety blitz led by the KwaZulu-Natal Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) resulted in the arrest of scores of motorists for various violations ranging from drunk driving to possession of illegal firearms. The multi-disciplinary operation, commanded by a senior female officer and supported largely by women law enforcement officials, ran from last night into the early hours of the morning. It involved RTI officers working in partnership with the South African Police Service, Metro Police, and municipal traffic authorities. Transport MEC Siboniso Duma praised the women-led team, saying they embodied the 'No-Nonsense, Zero Tolerance and Alufakwa' campaign aimed at restoring discipline on the province's roads. 'Our RTI team, together with SAPS and other traffic agencies, successfully arrested motorists for a range of violations,' said Duma. The charges include: -Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs; -Possession of drugs and illegal firearms; -Driving suspected stolen vehicles; -Outstanding warrants of arrest. Duma said the crackdown was necessary in light of the rising number of road accidents, particularly around paydays. 'During the first week of August alone, we lost more than 30 people on our roads,' he said. 'We have observed that accidents spike at the end of the month, on the 15th, and the 25th, when people are paid and are more likely to be out, increasing traffic and pedestrian activity.' The MEC reiterated that law enforcement would continue to adopt a strict stance on lawless driving and crime on the province's roads. 'It is for these reasons I have mandated our team to maintain a No-Nonsense, Zero Tolerance and Alufakwa posture,' said Duma.

Contractor paid: Work to resume soon on Mzimkhulu River bridge in Port Shepstone

Contractor paid: Work to resume soon on Mzimkhulu River bridge in Port Shepstone The MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, said today (Friday) that the contractor responsible for the rehabilitation of the Mzimkhulu River bridge has been paid. This is after a meeting with Provincial Treasury. 'We have received more than R800m from our budget. As pointed out a few weeks ago, as the Department of Transport, we experienced difficulties beyond our control,' added Duma. 'The National and Provincial Treasury's Basic Accounting System which is used to process payments was disrupted by the transition from the Standard Chart of Accounts (SCOA) 5 to 6. In addition, our payment system was also disrupted by the rechanneling of money to the Department of Education for the payment of teachers as governed by the National Norms and Standards for School Funding.' He added that the contractor is on site and will be moving machinery in to continue with this important assignment. 'We have agreed that the contractor must aim to finish the rehabilitation of the bridge by December 2. In our engagement with Provincial Treasury, it was agreed that our invoices from contractors will be prioritised, ' said Duma. He added that many other contractors have been paid and he apologised for the inconvenience caused to residents and the business community across all sectors.
