Karnataka CM Announces Financial Relief And Investigation Following Fatal RCB Victory Celebration Crush

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has declared the deadly crowd crush during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL victory celebrations an "unforeseen catastrophe" while announcing immediate relief measures and launching an official investigation. The tragedy at Chinnaswamy Stadium claimed 11 lives and left numerous others injured when massive crowds gathered to celebrate the team's championship win. During a media briefing, Siddaramaiah revealed that the Karnataka State Cricket Association, not the state government, had organized the stadium event. He emphasized the unprecedented nature of the crowd turnout, explaining that while the venue's maximum capacity is 35,000 spectators, an estimated 200,000 to 300,000 people converged on the location. The Chief Minister noted a stark contrast with another large gathering at Vidhana Soudha, where approximately 100,000 people assembled without incident. "Nobody anticipated this outcome, including the Cricket Association," Siddaramaiah stated, while referencing similar incidents that have occurred elsewhere, including at religious gatherings like the Kumbh Mela. He clarified that his comparison was not intended to minimize the current tragedy. The Chief Minister announced comprehensive support measures for affected families, including Rs 10 lakh compensation for each victim's relatives and complimentary medical care for all injured individuals. He confirmed that a Deputy Commissioner-level investigation has been initiated to examine the circumstances leading to the disaster. Siddaramiah personally visited Bowring and Vaidehi hospitals to meet with the injured and their families, providing updates on their condition. "I consulted with medical staff. All injured persons are now stable," he reported during his press conference. Reflecting on the incident's impact, the Chief Minister posted on social media that "A moment of celebration has been overshadowed by grief," expressing his condolences to the bereaved families. He revealed that the government had previously declined requests for a comprehensive victory parade specifically due to safety concerns about crowd management. The incident unfolded Wednesday evening as enthusiastic supporters gathered outside the stadium to commemorate RCB's long-awaited IPL championship victory. Despite prior awareness of potential overcrowding issues, the massive turnout created dangerous conditions that ultimately resulted in the fatal crush and multiple serious injuries.

Pahalgam attack: BJP hits out; says ‘remarks shameful, do Kharge, Rahul control their party?'

Accusing the Congress of 'speaking the language of Pakistan' following the Pahalgam terror attack, the BJP Monday demanded that the main Opposition party take action against its leaders for making statements that are 'being used' as 'anti-India' propaganda across the border. Addressing a press conference, BJP national spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad described as 'shameful' and 'unwarranted' remarks by Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramiah and other Congress leaders, such as Saifuddin Soz and Mani Shankar Aiyar, and others linked to the party, such as Robert Vadra. Stating that these remarks come at a time when the nation is grappling with grief following the attack that left 26 people dead, Prasad accused the Congress leaders of seeking to 'weaken India's unity'. He sought to know whether the Congress 'truly' stood united with the Government as it had stated during the all-party meeting following the attack. 'What are the Congress's senior leaders saying (about such statements)? Why are they saying so?… a pattern seems to have emerged… Karnataka CM Siddaramiah has said war is not an option … Pakistan TV channels and their generals are using this,' Prasad told reporters. Prasad referred to Siddaramaiah 's remark that there was no need for a war; Karnataka Excise Minister R B Timmapur asking 'why would someone firing a gun ask about a person's caste or religion?'; and a statement by Vijay Wadettiwar, Leader of the Congress Legislative Party in Maharashtra, asking whether 'terrorists have time to ask about religion while shooting?' Prasad also questioned Vadra's remarks about Muslims feeling suppressed and Aiyar's remark that the consequences of the Partition remain unresolved to this day. Siddaramaiah and Vadra later clarified that their remarks had been misinterpreted. The Congress also sought to distance itself from such statements with the party's communications in-charge, Jairam Ramesh, posting on X: 'They speak for themselves and do not reflect the INC's views. There should be absolutely no doubt whatsoever at this most sensitive of times that the CWC resolution, the views expressed by Shri Mallikarjun Kharge and Shri Rahul Gandhi (at the all-party meeting) and the views of authorised AICC office-bearers ALONE represent the position of the INC'. Prasad, meanwhile, said that while the global community, including the US, Russia, Australia, England, Saudi Arabia, Italy and UAE, 'are all standing with India', Congress ministers had claimed 'the world is mocking us'. 'Where are these thoughts and words coming from? During the candle march in Bihar, slogans of 'Pakistan Zindabad' were raised…When asked whether he would visit the house of Shubham Dwivedi (one of the tourists who was killed in the attack), Akhilesh Yadav stated that he has no connection with the family but would encourage his party workers to go there…This is truly unfortunate and deeply regrettable,' Prasad said. 'Do Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge have no control over their party?…all these statements are being misused by Pakistan, their social media is full of it…did they speak to Siddaramiah? Will any action be taken? This is not right; we condemn such statements,' Prasad said, reiterating Prime Minister Narendra Modi 's commitment to give a 'befitting reply' to those behind the terror strike. Taking on Kharge, whom he accused of harbouring 'resentment' against Modi, Prasad said, 'In reality, Mallikarjun Kharge harbors resentment towards Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, which is why he made the '56-inch chest' remark. At a time when the nation expects unity, Kharge should refrain from using such language.' BJP Lok Sabha MP Sambit Patra, meanwhile, asked whether such leaders were 'Pakistani agents', and the statements made by Congress leaders 'a blatant attempt to lower the morale of the country's army, the country's people and the country's government'. The BJP's renewed attack came a day after the party's national spokesperson, Sudhanshu Trivedi, took on the Karnataka CM for 'speaking the same language' as 'Pakistan's Defence Minister, Pakistan's Home Minister and Pakistan's Foreign Minister'.

Congress's Firefight Amid Row Over Party Leaders' Pahalgam Attack Remarks

New Delhi: Determined to put an end to controversies arising from its leaders' off-the-cuff remarks on the Pahalgam terror attack, the Congress leadership has asked party members to avoid making unnecessary remarks. The party's leadership has said such comments don't reflect its position. The clarification -- and distancing -- comes amid a political row over remarks made by several Congress leaders, including Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramiah, after the party leadership pledged full support to the Centre in this time of crisis. Senior Congress leader and the party's communications in-charge Jairam Ramesh said Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the Opposition, Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi had already made the party's position clear at the all-party meeting over the heinous terror attack that left 25 tourists and a Kashmiri man dead. He also said the party also passed a resolution at a Congress Working Committee meeting. "Some Congress leaders have been speaking to the media. They speak for themselves and do not reflect the INC's views. There should be absolutely no doubt whatsoever at this most sensitive of times that the CWC resolution, the views expressed by Shri Mallikarjun Kharge and Shri Rahul Gandhi and the views of authorised AICC office-bearers ALONE represent the position of the INC," Mr Ramesh said in a post on X. "What individual Congress leaders are saying is their view. The Congress party's view is the view in the CWC resolution, the views expressed by the Congress president and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. There have been security lapses and intelligence failures. However, we need unity, solidarity, a collective will, a collective response and constant communication between the government and the Opposition. We understand the gravity of the situation and we must stand united," Mr Ramesh told news agency ANI. He said the security failure that led to the Pahalgam tragedy needs to be analysed. "But at the moment, you should not associate the views expressed by some Congress leaders as reflecting the party's views." #WATCH | Delhi: On the statements of various Congress leaders regarding #PahalgamTerroristAttack, Congress MP Jairam Ramesh says "...What individual Congress leaders are saying is their view. The Congress party's view is the view in the CWC resolution, the views expressed by the… — ANI (@ANI) April 28, 2025 Among the Congress leaders whose remarks have sparked a row as the nation struggles to cope with the shock in the aftermath of Pahalgam attack is Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The Congress veteran's remark that he does not favour a war with Pakistan drew nationwide criticism. Questioning the security arrangements in Jammu and Kashmir, Mr Siddaramiah had said, "There is no necessity to wage a war against Pakistan. Strict security measures must be initiated. We are not in favour of waging war. There should be peace, people must feel secure, and the Central government should ensure effective security arrangements." The remarks sparked a wave of criticism at a time emotions are running high over the cold-blooded killing of innocents. Mr Siddaramiah later issued a clarification and said that war should always be a nation's last resort. "Only when every other means to defeat the enemy has failed, should a country be compelled to go to central government has already initiated certain diplomatic steps, including revisiting the Indus Waters Treaty - a move we wholeheartedly welcome. We trust that even sterner actions are on the horizon. Not every move needs to be broadcast to the world; rest assured, the nation stands fully united behind every strong and decisive step taken," he said. "At this crucial moment, nations across the world have come out in strong condemnation of Pakistan-sponsored terrorism, standing firmly with India. We must seize this unprecedented global support and teach Pakistan a lesson so profound that they dare not commit such reckless acts ever again," the Congress leader added. Mr Siddaramaiah's remarks were covered by Pakistani media, prompting the BJP to launch a scathing attack. Karnataka BJP chief BY Vijayendra posted on X, "Big cheers for Wazar-e-Ala @siddaramaiah from far across the Borders! Pakistani media is all too praise for @siddaramaiah and visibly disappointed at the backlash he is receiving from BJP & others, for his comments against war with Pakistan." Leader of the Opposition in Karnataka Assembly said the Chief Minister may well qualify for a "Pakistan Ratna" award. Mr Siddaramiah's cabinet colleague RB Timmapur also drew fire when he said the terrorists in Pahalgam could not have asked their targets' religion. RB Timmapur, Karnataka's Excise Minister, told the media, "A man who is shooting, will he ask caste or religion? He will just shoot and go. Think practically. He will not stand there, ask and then shoot." The minister said the country is upset over the heinous attack and alleged that a "conspiracy" was being plotted to paint this as a religious issue. "I feel they didn't ask about religion when they were carrying out the terror attack. In case they did, there shouldn't be this madness of using such a statement to politicise the issue based on religion." Family members of multiple victims of the April 22 attack have said the terrorists went to each of them and asked about their religion. Those who said they were Hindu were shot dead. BJP spokesperson CR Kesavan responded strongly to the minister's remarks, describing them as "barbaric and wicked". "The barbaric and wicked remarks of Karnataka Congress Minister Mr Thimmapur has insulted the integrity of the grieving families and humiliated the courageous sacrifice of the victims who were massacred in the Pakistan-backed Islamic terror attack in Pahalgam." The latest to make it to the list is Congress MLA Vijay Wadettiwar. Speaking to news agency ANI, he said, "They (the government) are saying terrorists killed people after asking them (about their religion). Do terrorists have time for all this? Some people say this happened, others say this did not happen. Terrorists have no caste or religion. Catch those who are responsible and take action," he said. The Maharashtra leader's remarks drew a counter from Milind Deora, MP from BJP ally Shiv Sena. "When Indians are killed by terrorists in #Pahalgam, Maharashtra's former LoP Vijay Wadettiwar's first instinct is to defend Pakistan-just like when he claimed that Pakistani bullets didn't kill Hemant Karkare during 26/11. No wonder Indians see the opposition as a national security risk," he said on X. Congress leader from Jammu and Kashmir, Saifuddin Soz, said that if Pakistan says that it was not involved in the Pahalgam attack, India must accept it for now and proceed with the investigation. "What happened in Pahalgam was tragic and unacceptable. Every Indian should adopt the line that the Prime Minister has adopted. If Pakistan says it is not involved, let us accept that argument for now and rely on our investigating agencies, who will know better. India and Pakistan are two neighbours; the neighbourhood cannot be changed, whatever you do. Ultimately, what will prevail between India and Pakistan is dialogue. Dialogue and discussion. No military solution, no arms, no sword. Nothing will work except word of mouth, that is dialogue," he told ANI, drawing a sharp retort from the BJP. BJP MP Anurag Thakur said people like Soz represent "the true face of the Congress". "Pakistan is a habitual offender that takes delight in bleeding India and troubling the world by funding terrorism as its state policy; hence, it must be brought to task. The Narendra Modi government has taken a wise decision to suspend the Indus Water Treaty, sending a categorical message to Pakistan: don't expect hospitality when you are hostile," he said. "The entire nation has unequivocally supported the diplomatic measures taken by the Modi government, exercised with utmost restraint, to counter Pakistan and its terrorism. However, people like former Union Minister in the Congress-led UPA government, Saifuddin Soz, representing the true face of the Congress, are troubled by the government's decision. Shamelessly defending Pakistan, their hearts bleed for a rogue nation," he said on X.
