L.A.'s most famous doughnut spot is opening in the Bay Area

Randy's Donuts, the instantly recognizable Los Angeles chain known for its original location's gargantuan sign and a multitude of doughnut flavors, is opening its first Bay Area shop. The 73-year-old brand will arrive in the region with an outpost in Santa Clara, at 2595 Homestead Rd., SFGate first reported. (The Chronicle and SFGate are both owned by Hearst but operate independently). Adeel Siddiqui, owner of Bay Area Indian restaurant mini chain Port of Peri Peri for the last 17 years, confirmed the news to the Chronicle. He is working with two other partners under the franchise group Sweet Rings LLC. The plan is to operate this and another three locations planned for Fremont, San Jose and Redwood City; If all goes well, the new location will serve its treats in the third quarter of the year. 'We're so excited to be the first to bring Randy's Donuts to the Bay Area,' he said. Randy's is opening just a stone's throw away from Stan's Donuts, the South Bay's venerable doughnut specialist, featured on the Chronicle's top doughnut list, which is located at 2628 Homestead Rd. Commentators on Reddit were quick to make the connection, but expressed hope that the two shops could coexist.' Given that Stan's has been around for a very long time and is very very popular (best glazed donuts you've ever eaten), fingers crossed they'll be fine,' one Reddit user wrote. Siddiqui believes the Bay Area is the perfect place for Randy's. He points to strong companies in the tech industry and a large, diverse population as promising signs. Randy's, whose 35-foot tall donut sign has graced the silver screen in films such as 'Mars Attacks,' 'Dope' and 'Iron Man 2,' also has an allure that Siddiqui, like others, can't resist. 'The original has become a destination. People everywhere know about it,' he said. But there are currently no plans to install a similar sign atop the building, a former KFC location. The Bay Area has been expecting Randy's Donuts' arrival since owner Mark Kelegian bought what was then a few, but popular drive-thrus. In 2019 he told the Chronicle he was thinking of opening 10 locations in the region, but did not specify when and where. Today, Randy's is on an expansion tear. New franchises have settled into San Diego, Las Vegas and abroad into Japan, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia and South Korea. Is San Francisco due for a Randy's location? Siddiqui says he is focused on getting the first locations right. But looking ahead, his answer is very certain: 'Absolutely,' he said.

Chargesheet filed against Dubai woman for entering Bollywood actor's house

Mumbai: The Khar police filed a chargesheet on Wednesday against a 47-year-old Dubai resident who illegally entered actor Aditya Roy Kapur 's Bandra (West) flat on May 26. Gajala Siddiqui, who is married to a businessman, claimed to be a devoted fan of Kapur and said she had met him at a Dubai institution's inauguration in 2017, although the actor does not remember this encounter. She said she obtained the actor's address through an internet search. The incident happened between 6pm and 7.30pm when Siddiqui travelled by taxi from Mumbai International Airport after arrival and reached Kapur's home in Rizvi Heights. "The chargesheet was filed after we gathered details about Siddiqui's intention and purpose of her visit and how she managed to get hold of the actor's address. She claimed she discovered the actor's residential address through an internet search, travelled to Mumbai on Monday without informing her family," said a police officer of the Khar police station. The filed chargesheet includes statements from the actor's house help, Sangita Pawar (49), the society manager, and his manager, along with CCTV evidence. "Our investigation revealed that Siddiqui departed without her mobile phone. Her family and husband were unaware of her location until the police station contacted them about the case. She is currently in Byculla Women Jail following her court appearance after police custody. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Kickstart your new journey with the Honda Shine 125 Honda Learn More Undo Her husband and family are expected to arrive in the city," said the officer. The officer indicated that the court will decide about releasing her passport and permitting her return to Dubai. Siddiqui informed police that she took a cab from the airport to the address she found online. At 6pm, Siddiqui entered the flat after convincing the house help, Sangita Pawar (49). In the complaint, Pawar said: "I was alone at home. At 6 pm, the doorbell rang. When I answered, I found a woman at the door. The woman asked if it was the residence of actor Aditya Roy Kapur. When I confirmed it, the woman said she had brought clothes and other gifts for the actor. I believed her and let her in after I informed that the actor is out for shooting." When Kapur returned, he was told about the visitor but said he did not recognise her. "She tried to approach the actor, prompting him to leave the house and contact society manager Jayashree Dunkdu. Dunkdu then informed the actor's manager, Shruti Rao, who quickly arrived in the flat and contacted the Khar police. When I asked the woman to leave, she refused and insisted on staying at the actor's residence," Pawar said in the FIR. The situation continued for 90 minutes at Kapur's residence before his house help alerted his managers and the police. Siddiqui, who brought gifts and clothing for Kapur, would not leave without meeting him.

This start-up is lowering the chances of passing on life-threatening diseases to your children—but it will cost you

Biotech start-up Orchid is one of the few companies offering in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) patients the option to screen their embryos for severe genetic diseases before their pregnancy begins. "This technology is going to totally reshape how people have children," Orchid's CEO Noor Siddiqui told CNBC's The Edge in an interview. "I think it's going to become an option that more and more people will choose because there's just the opportunity to avoid a lot of catastrophic outcomes, and they don't want to roll the dice on their child's health," Siddiqui added. During IVF, a woman takes fertility hormones to suppress her natural menstrual cycle and increase the number of eggs in her ovaries. Once her eggs are collected, they are mixed with the sperm and fertilized in a lab. The viable embryos are then transferred to the uterus. Siddiqui says that Orchid has developed a new technology that sequences 99% of an embryo's entire genome before implantation in the womb and screens for over 1,200 monogenic conditions, as well as some polygenic diseases. "When you have an embryo sample, you have about 125 cells on day five, and the embryologist at the IVF lab sends us about five of those cells, and in those five cells, you only have about 10,000 times less than the amount of DNA that you would have in a blood or saliva sample. So, what we had to invent is a new amplification protocol, as well as a new computational pipeline," Siddiqui said. The embryo screening process takes between two and three weeks, after which patients receive a whole genome embryo report. Orchid's counselors go through the report and help patients decide which embryo to move forward. Despite having been cleared by the Federal Drug Administration as a laboratory developed test (LDT) and backed by geneticists like George Church and Carlos Bustamante, Orchid's procedure has failed to convince some. "These tests, in general, cost money, often not covered by insurance. And so increasingly, breast cancer, for instance, is becoming more a disease of the poor because people can afford to undergo IVF and screen out breast cancer mutations when they've had a family history of breast cancer. I think that raises a problem ethically," bioethicist and Columbia University professor Robert Klitzman told The Edge in an interview. Orchid currently charges $2,500 per embryo screening. That's in addition to the IVF process which, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, ranges from $15,000 to $20,000 for a single cycle and sometimes requires several attempts. To mitigate the costs, the company has a philanthropic program that patients on low incomes can apply for. Orchid's technology is now available nationwide in the U.S. except in New York state, where Orchid had applied for a license to operate at the time of the interview. Learn more about Orchid's technology by clicking the video above. IVF was conceived as a reproductive method for people with infertility issues, but over the past decade, other patient groups have turned to it to prevent passing on genetic conditions to their child.

BJP Minority Morcha to launch campaign to encourage Muslim girls to join defence

The BJP Minority Morcha will run a nationwide campaign from June 9 to encourage Muslim women to join the defence forces. This was announced by its national president Jamal Siddiqui on Thursday (May 29, 2025). Also Read | BJP to distribute 'Saugat-e-Modi' kits to people from Muslim, Sikh and Christian communities The Minority Morcha plans to organise a programme on the 11 years of Modi government across the country. Meetings will be held in dargahs and madrasas, and Muslim girls will be encouraged to join the defence forces. 'We want them to also join the forces, become Agniveer. For this, we will start a programme across the country from June 9,' he said. Mr. Siddiqui alleged that some fundamentalists wanted to keep Muslim women confined, but 'according to Islam they have the freedom to go out and work'. Copies of the Constitution would be distributed and members of the community apprised of the rights bestowed upon them. For this, a big programme will be held in Delhi's Shaheen Bagh. Condemning the remarks of a Jammu BJP MLA, Mr. Siddiqui said no one had the right to insult the defence forces.
