Tom Cruise Praises Ex-Wife Nicole Kidman as a ‘Great Actress'

Bang Showbiz | Los Angeles Tom Cruise has paid tribute to his ex-wife Nicole Kidman, describing her as a 'great actress' and reflecting on their time working together on Eyes Wide Shut. The Top Gun star, who was married to Kidman from 1990 to 2001, recalled recommending her for the role of Alice Harford in Stanley Kubrick's 1999 psychological drama. Speaking to the British Film Institute's Sight and Sound magazine, Cruise said he believed Nicole was the perfect fit for the part. 'I flew out to his [Kubrick's] house and landed in his backyard,' Cruise said. 'I read the script the day before, and we spent the day talking about it. I knew all of his films. While we were getting to know each other, I suggested Nicole for the role—because, obviously, she's a great actress.' The production of Eyes Wide Shut famously stretched over 400 days. Cruise recalled promising Kubrick his full commitment to the demanding shoot, even as the legendary director downplayed the expected timeline. 'I knew it was going to be a long shoot,' Cruise said. 'He told me, 'No, no, we'll finish in three or four months.' And I said, 'Stanley, I'm here for you. Whatever it's going to take, we're going to do this.'' Reflecting on the experience, Cruise emphasized his passion for filmmaking. 'When I go to make a movie, I spend a lot of time in preparation—understanding what people need, how we can collaborate, and really create something special,' he explained. Cruise also spoke fondly of working with Val Kilmer, who passed away last month at age 65. The two reunited in Top Gun: Maverick, and Cruise shared his appreciation for Kilmer's return to the franchise. 'I felt so grateful that he agreed to do the film,' Cruise said. 'We did a lot to make it happen. At first, he didn't want to do it—he said, 'I don't want to be a supporting character. I want to star in films.'' Despite the initial hesitation, Kilmer's appearance was a highlight for fans—and a meaningful moment for Cruise, who cherished their on-screen reunion.

When Tom Cruise convinced director Stanley Kubrick to cast his wife Nicole Kidman in Eyes Wide Shut

All of Hollywood stopped and gasped in shock when Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman called it quits on their marriage in 2001, after being together for 11 years. However, during their time together, the couple worked alongside each other in movies like Far and Away (1992), Days of Thunder (1990) and Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut (1999). Interestingly, it was Cruise who suggested Kubrick cast Kidman in the film, and the director agreed to cash in on the undeniable and organic chemistry between the two. Just prior to getting the coveted BFI fellowship, Crusie talked to the magazine Sight and Sound and shared the story of how he was brought onto the Kubrick project and how, after glistening reviews from directors Sydney Pollack and Martin Scorsese, he was more than ready to work with The Shining director. 'It was a great experience. I was very excited to do it. I knew Stanley's movies very well, and I was introduced to him through Sydney Pollack. So Stanley called Sydney because he wanted me to make a movie. He sent me a fax. I flew straight to his house, and I had already read the script before meeting him, so we sat down in his backyard and discussed it the entire day. 'I knew all of his films. I spoke to Scorsese about him and Pollack… so I knew what he did and how he worked. Then it was basically he and I getting to know each other. And when we were doing that, I suggested Nicole play the role [of Alice]. Because obviously she's a great actress.' Cruise shared that he assured Kubrick that he was fully committed to the project and, no matter how long it takes, he was going to see it through. 'I knew it was going to be a long shoot. He was like, 'No, no, no. We'll finish in three or four months.' And I said, 'Stanley, look, I'm here for you. Whatever it's going to take, we're going to do this…' I thought the film was very interesting, and I wanted to have that experience,' added Cruise. In his illustrious career, Stanley Kubrick directed movies like The Shining (1980), A Clockwork Orange (1971), 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) and Barry Lyndon (1975), among others. The director passed away in 1999 due to a heart attack. On the other hand, Tom Cruise is gearing up for the release of Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning, which he calls 'a culmination of all Mission Impossible movies and the work everyone has put into it for the last 30 years.' The film releases in India on May 17.

Tom Cruise gives positive update on Top Gun: Maverick sequel

Tom Cruise has revealed he and the 'Top Gun: Maverick' team are 'thinking and talking about many different stories' for the sequel. The 62-year-old actor is set to reprise his role as pilot Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell in the upcoming follow-up to the 2022 blockbuster, and has now shared he and the creative team are currently exploring different avenues of where to take the 'Top Gun' story next. During an appearance on the Australian 'Today' show, Cruise said: 'Yeah, we're thinking and talking about many different stories and what could we do and what's possible. 'It took me 35 years to figure out 'Top Gun: Maverick', so all of these things we're working on, we're discussing 'Days of Thunder' and 'Top Gun: Maverick'.' The 'Mission: Impossible' star added he was working on 'numerous other films' at the moment, including Alejandro Iñárritu's first English language movie since 2015's 'The Revenant', and other projects with his 'Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning' director Christopher McQuarrie. He said: 'There's numerous other films that we're actively working on right now. I'm always shooting a film, prepping a film, posting a film. 'I just finished a film with Alejandro Iñárritu too, who did 'The Revenant', that was an extraordinary experience and [Christopher McQuarrie] and I are always working on several different films.' 'Top Gun: Maverick' - which is the legacy sequel to 1986's 'Top Gun' - followed Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell (Cruise) as he trained the next generation of TOPGUN pilots, including Bradley 'Rooster' Bradshaw (Miles Teller) Jake 'Hangman' Seresin (Glen Powell) and Robert 'Bob' Floyd (Lewis Pullman). As well as introducing a host of new characters, 'Top Gun: Maverick' reunited Cruise's 'Maverick' with Tom 'Iceman' Kazansky, as portrayed by the late Val Kilmer - who passed away last month at the age of 65 from complications related to pneumonia following a long period of ill health - which Cruise described as a 'very special' moment. Speaking with Sight and Sound magazine, the 'Jack Reacher' star said: 'To come back all those years later, and it was amazing being on set for 'Top Gun: Maverick' because it was like time had not passed. We were laughing and it was joyous. 'And then we started acting and it's just, you see it … he became 'Iceman'. The power that this guy has, even not saying anything, to become that character. You see how even the sniff that he gave. He was 'Iceman'. 'And you saw the dynamic between these friends. It was very special, to say the least, for me personally. 'I just tell people … you take Iceman from the first film and you look at it here, that whole journey, he became 'Iceman'. And he didn't even have to speak. 'That's what he's able to do. Beautiful, really beautiful. A gift that he had and that he shared with all of us.' Even so, Kilmer had initially rejected the role of 'Iceman' in the original 'Top Gun'. Cruise explained: 'I felt so grateful that he decided to make the film. We did a lot to get him in the movie. Originally, he just didn't want to make the movie, 'I don't want to be a supporting, I want to star in films.' 'I was calling his agent, and Tony Scott was hunting him down and meeting in an elevator with Val, and he was like, 'Please, Val, please.' 'You just see what a great actor, charismatic guy he was. And in that scene, what I love about what he did and how he played it, he just knew that tone to hit.'

Richard Wilkins shares head-scratching Tom Cruise selfie ahead of Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning release

Richard Wilkins has shared an eyebrow-raising new selfie with movie star Tom Cruise that appeared to shrink the legendary movie star. Cruise, 62, is currently on the junket circuit to promote Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning, in what will mark the eighth installment of the iconic action film series. One of the movie star's stops was a sit down with legendary Nine entertainment journalist Richard Wilkins, who took to Instagram to share a behind-the-scenes look at their chat. 'Always a pleasure to catch up with the great @tomcruise,' Wilkins wrote. '#missionimpossiblethefinalreckoning is a beast of a movie! Bigger, faster, higher, deeper… this guy keeps raising the bar... and then jumping over it again… and again! 'Mission Control… this week on @thetodayshow.' Bizarrely, the selfie appeared to show Cruise looking completely dwarfed next to Wilkins. While the size disparity was likely the result of a distorted camera lens, the optical illusion appeared to accentuate Cruise's much-speculated real height. The legendary movie star's true height has been the matter of fierce debate for decades, with most outlets reporting that Cruise stands at about 1.7 metres tall. Other outlets, such as The Guardian, have estimated Cruise at closer to 1.67 metres tall, which would put Cruise on par with stars like Al Pacino, Ben Stiller and Kendrick Lamar. Cruise's height was also a frequent topic of tabloid conversation during his decade-long marriage to statuesque Aussie star Nicole Kidman, who is reportedly about 1.8 metres tall. Following their high profile divorce in 2001, Kidman infamously remarked 'at least I can wear heels now' during a late night talk show appearance. The selfie comes just days after Cruise made a rare comment about Kidman, with whom he shares daughter Isabella and son Connor. Cruise recently spoke to Sight and Sound magazine, where he reflected on his 1999 psychological drama Eyes Wide Shut, directed by Stanley Kubrick. During the chat, Cruise revealed it was his idea to cast then-wife Kidman as his co-star. "It was a great experience. I was very excited to do it," he told the publication. "I knew Stanley's movies very well and I was introduced to him through Sydney Pollack. So Stanley called Sydney 'cause he wanted me to make a movie. "Then it was basically he and I getting to know each other and when we were doing that, I suggested Nicole play the role (of Alice). 'Because obviously she's a great actress." Eyes Wide Shut marked the third and final time the couple were paired together onscreen, following Far and Away and Days of Thunder, where they first met.
