Scottish inmates able to watch hit TV show Prison Break
Prisoners are permitted to rent the 2005 crime drama which details the fictional story of a US jailbreak, as well as titles like Silence of the Lambs and psychological thriller Dexter. Also included in the rentable catalogue is thousands of 18-rated DVDs like Fifty Shades of Grey, Brokeback Mountain and American Pie, according to The Scottish Sun. Shadow justice secretary Liam Kerr MSP said: 'Ordinary Scots will be appalled that inmates are being provided with X-rated movies by prisons. 'England and Wales banned 18-rated movies and TV shows from their prisons 12 years ago and it is about time that the Scottish Prison Service followed suit. 'Many of the prisoners at Barlinnie will be behind bars for violent crimes, so it is common sense they should not be able to access graphically violent material about serial killers and torturers. 'Prisoners trying to get clean will also not be helped by having access to content that promotes drug use. 'SNP Ministers must intervene and immediately direct the SPS to remove violent or sexual films from our prisons.' (Image: Image of Liam Kerr MSP, PA) A spokesman for the Prison Officers' Association said: 'Given all the factors such as overcrowding, drug use, bullying and organised crime gang activities inside our prisons, the last thing we need is anything else adding to the tension or temperatures. 'It is something that the Scottish Prison Service (SPS) should be reviewing as a priority with a view to limiting the availability of these films.' Other titles available include serial killer classic Silence of the Lambs and psychological thriller Dexter - a series about a killer police forensic officer. A source said: 'Some of the depraved crimes this lot have committed could easily be adapted into a Hollywood blockbuster. 'The last thing they need is to be given any twisted ideas - they shouldn't even be allowed TVs in the first place.' Also available for prison movie nights is Fifty Shades of Grey, Brokeback Mountain and American Pie. Lags can also kick back and watch a documentary about real-life child killers Fred and Rose West. But critics have basted the film fiasco and are urging prison bosses to review the rules. Amazon Prime fans have just days to watch 'one of the creepiest thrillers'
Amazon Prime Video watchers have just a week left before the acclaimed horror, The Silence of the Lambs, leaves the streamer. The 1991 movie starring Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster follows Clarice Starling, an FBI cadet, seeking help from a serial killer Hannibal Lecter to apprehend another prolific murderer, Buffalo Bill, targeting young women and removing the skin from their bodies. The iconic movie is one of just a handful of movies to win the 'big five' Oscars – picture, best actor, best actress, best director and best adapted screenplay – and has cemented itself in horror movie history. Scoring an impressive 95% on Rotten Tomatoes to go with it, if you still need more convincing to give it a try, fans from over the years have shared nothing but praise for its stomach-churning plot. 'Hopkins absolutely nails the creepy, calculating Hannibal, making his performance unforgettable. Foster's portrayal of Clarice balances strength and vulnerability, adding a real human element to the tension,' Rotten Tomatoes User Jaxon H praised. 'GREATEST VILLAIN OF ALL TIME!!! The acting, story, characters are so incredible,' Darcy J echoed. 'The Silence of the Lambs is one of the creepiest and most intense thrillers ever made. 'The atmosphere is dark and unsettling, which makes everything even more gripping. If you like thrillers that mess with your mind, you have to watch this. It's disturbing but in a way that makes you appreciate how good it is,' Aptem agreed. 'Will always remain one of the greats. Hopkins and Foster shines properly in character here. Directing is first class. Gripping and always shifting between the dark and light, doubt and facts, bizarre and sense, psycho and insane logic. Intelligent and intriguing. Absolute benchmark classic,' Frans B said. Reflecting on the movie's legacy in 2021 to Vanity Fair, Jodie said: 'What's surprising about [the movie being intense] is that there's really no blood and gore. There's only really one scene that is at all gory. 'The movie is so scary because it seeps into people's consciousness through fears. It really works on fear more than anything else.' And Anthony reminisced on how the iconic scene of his reveal in the prison cell came about. 'I remember the day when Jonathan asked me [how I wanted to be revealed in the prison cell for the first time]. More Trending 'It was Monday, January the 9th, 1990, and he said, 'The camera's going to be Jodie coming down the corridor. How'd you want to be seen? Do you want to be standing, or reading, or asleep, or something?' I said, 'No. I'd like to be standing.' ''Where?' I said, 'In the centre of the cell.' 'Why?' I said, 'I can smell her.' He said, 'You are crazy.',' he recalled. The Silence of the Lambs is streaming on Amazon Prime Video until June 1. Got a story? Britain's longest serving prisoner is 'slowly dying' under new 'barbaric' regime
Nicknamed Hannibal the Cannibal due to his crimes, Robert Maudsley is struggling after being moved to a new prison as he is 'especially vulnerable' to infection. A new "barbaric" jail regime is slowly killing Britain's longest serving prisoner, according to his new love. Robert Maudsley, 71, suffered Covid during the pandemic and has been left especially vulnerable to infection as a result of his extraordinary time in solitary confinement. For 47 years, a quadruple killer, nicknamed 'Hannibal the Cannibal' by fellow prisoners, he has been kept apart from the rest of the prison population. It now equates to more than 17,000 consecutive days alone in his cell. But he was moved from Wakefield jail, known as Monster Mansion, in April after a row over the 'privileges' there, reports the Mirror. He had been on hunger strike, refusing food over several weeks, though he has started eating again. He was taken to Whitemoor jail, Cambridgeshire, where he is being held on a specialist wing. His brothers Paul and Kevin have found it hard to visit him from their native Merseyside. He found love with Loveinia Grace Mackenney, 69, who writes to him regularly. Loveinia said: "He had Covid 19 twice and almost died. "This new regime is slowly killing him. I believe they knew that was a risk when they moved him. He is totally different now, he cannot write the way he did before because he thinks his letters are being checked, he has not had his TV or radio, it is barbaric." Loveinia is concerned that the hunger strike and new regime are combining to slowly kill Maudsley. In his letters to her, he told of his miserable childhood, taken into care due to neglect and beatings at home. He was first locked up for manslaughter when he was 21 in 1974. On July 28, 1978, already serving life, Maudsley killed two fellow prisoners in Wakefield jail. He was said to have told a prison guard: 'There'll be two short on the roll call.' He had already killed a fellow patient in Broadmoor secure hospital, in 1974. The victim was found with a plastic spoon blade in his ear, which led to Maudsley's nicknames, first 'Spoons', then Hannibal the Cannibal, amid claims that he had eaten his brain. Special provision was made for him inside Wakefield, and his cell was compared to one used to house Dr Hannibal Lecter, played by Anthony Hopkins, in his Oscar winning role in the 1991 film 'Silence of the Lambs'. The Prison Service declined to comment on individual prisoners. However, a source stressed that no prisoners are kept in solitary confinement in the UK penal system.
