SAP Labs opens new Devanahalli campus in Bengaluru, India
SAP Labs India, a part of the German software company SAP, has inaugurated its innovation park campus in Devanahalli, Bengaluru. The new facility, part of a phased development, represents a total investment of around $224m. It has a maximum planned capacity of 15,000. Phase two of the project has been approved and is slated for completion by the third quarter of 2028. Spanning around 17ha, the new campus is almost twice the size of SAP's existing Whitefield site in the city. Presently, it houses over 3,200 employees with plans to increase that number to 4,500 over the next few months. SAP's innovation park will function as a premier hub for artificial intelligence (AI) innovation, research, and development in the Asia-Pacific region. It will facilitate global AI roles in product engineering, customer service, and delivery. Additionally, it features AI laboratories, hybrid collaboration areas, startup incubation centres, hackathon spaces, and a customer experience centre. Thomas Saueressig, a member of the executive board of SAP SE for Customer Services and Delivery, emphasised that India is a strategically important market, hence justifying the large-scale investment. 'The approval of future phases underscores our commitment to significant annual hiring. Together, our two campuses can accommodate up to 30,000 employees,' he added. Sindhu Gangadharan, managing director of SAP Labs India, praised the abundance of talent available in India. 'On average, over the last few years, we have hired anywhere between 1,500 to 2,000. And so, we intend to bring those amazing talents to work on the innovations at SAP, so we will continue hiring,' he added. SAP also announced training and academic collaborations alongside the campus launch. It will invest $115,597 through a partnership with EduBridge to train over 400 underserved youth in AI-related roles. Furthermore, it has collaborated with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras to focus on AI-based brain research. The project plans to use public data for early diagnosis and treatment predictions. With over 17,300 employees, India is one of the largest employee bases for SAP outside Germany. Besides Bengaluru, SAP also has offices in Gurugram, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Pune. SAP opens new campus in Bengaluru, its second-largest R&D hub outside Germany
SAP opened its new campus in Bengaluru on Tuesday, marking it as the company's second-largest R&D hub outside its headquarters in Germany. The India Innovation Park, as it is called, is located in Devanahalli, in the northern part of the city, close to Bengaluru's international airport. The 41-acre campus will be developed in multiple phases. Currently, 27 acres have been built and are operational. Once the entire facility is complete, it will have the capacity to accommodate up to 14,000 people. At present, 3,200 SAP employees have already moved in, and an additional 4,500 employees are expected to relocate during the first phase. The phase two of the campus has already been approved, and construction will begin soon, with a targeted completion by the Q2 or Q3 of 2028. The total cost of building the campus exceeds 194 million euros. This is SAP's second campus in Bengaluru, with the first located in the Whitefield area of the city. 'The [Innovation Park] is designed to bring together our customers, partners, academia, startups, and communities. For us, this is the beating heart of co-innovation,' said Sindhu Gangadharan, MD of SAP Labs India and Head of Customer Innovation Services at SAP, while addressing hundreds of employees, partners, and government representatives at the inauguration. Software maker SAP is the latest major tech company to expand in India and increase its footprint in Bengaluru, now the world's fourth-largest tech cluster after Silicon Valley, Boston, and London. Earlier this year, Google opened its new campus in Bengaluru, while Microsoft is setting up its largest R&D center in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. More and more tech companies are expanding their presence in India by setting up either Research & Development centers or Global Capability Centers (GCCs). Once considered low-cost outsourcing hubs for global firms, these GCCs centers have evolved significantly over the past few years by supporting their parent organisations by handling a wide range of business functions and specialising in areas such as IT, automation, and manufacturing. Bengaluru is home to 875 GCCs and accounts for 34 per cent of India's GCC workforce. According to a report by IT industry body Nasscom and consulting firm Zinnov, released late last year, the market size of India's GCC sector is expected to grow from $64.6 billion in fiscal 2024 to between $99 billion and $105 billion by 2030. In March, SAP became Europe's most valuable listed company, overtaking French luxury group LVMH and Ozempic-maker Novo Nordisk in market capitalisation, after pivoting its business toward cloud computing and seizing opportunities in artificial intelligence. SAP generates the majority of its revenue from cloud services and is focused on leveraging AI to drive efficiencies for businesses. The company offers enterprise products across cloud solutions, expense management, supply chain management, and analytics. SAP's products are used by over 440,000 customers worldwide, including 98 of the world's 100 largest companies. Taken altogether, its client base generates over 80 per cent of global commerce, according to the company. SAP has over 17,000 employees spread across Bengaluru, Pune, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Delhi in India. The 53-year-old German tech giant has over 40 per cent of its global R&D workforce in India.

SAP Labs opens second campus in Bengaluru with €194 mn investment
SAP Labs has invested about €194 million to start its second campus in Bengaluru, as the research and development (R&D) division of the German software company doubles down on its presence in India at a time when artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping the technology landscape. The second campus, located on the outskirts, complements the existing one in the city's technology hub and has a capacity of 15,000 people, Sindhu Gangadharan, managing director of SAP Labs India, said while inaugurating the new office space. SAP Labs already has about 14,000 employees in Bengaluru, and the latest addition will raise the headcount to around 29,000. Besides this, the company has offices in Hyderabad, Pune and Mumbai. SAP Labs India is SAP's largest R&D location outside its headquarters in Walldorf, Germany. It is driving innovation in key AI use cases and solutions across the entire product portfolio — from S/4 HANA to HXM and the latest sustainability suite. 'Every developer will be an AI developer, and they need the talent to understand deep domain expertise,' Gangadharan added. Thomas Saueressig, board member of SAP SE, said that 75 per cent of SAP engineers have undergone dedicated AI training, while 90 per cent use some AI tools to improve productivity. SAP Labs told Business Standard earlier this year that it aims to double its customers' productivity gains — from 20 per cent to 40 per cent — through generative AI by the end of this year. For SAP Labs, 40 per cent of its global R&D workforce is based in India, and 25 per cent of its global patents are filed from here. It also collaborates with professors to help employees write technical papers and contribute to science journals. Saueressig said SAP is also looking to build its own foundational large language models based on its proprietary data, which will complement models from OpenAI, Mistral and Anthropic.
