Aneet Padda's role in Saiyaara sparks debate, can you really get Alzheimer's at 22? Doctors break down the rare condition

When audiences walked into theatres expecting a tragic love story, they were hit with something deeper, an emotional ride that explored memory loss, love, and the cruel twist of early-onset Alzheimer's. Directed by Mohit Suri, Saiyaara stars Ahaan Panday as Krish Kapoor, a struggling musician, and Aneet Padda as Vaani Batra, a quiet aspiring journalist. Their story takes a turn when Vaani begins forgetting basic things, first small details, then entire conversations. In one of the film's pivotal moments, Vaani collapses and is rushed to the hospital. When asked by doctors, she can't recall her brother's age or the date. She is diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's, a rare but real condition. How accurate is Saiyaara's portrayal of Alzheimer's? While the film has opened conversations around the disease, neurologists say its depiction is far from medical reality. Dr. Sunil Singla, Head of Neurology at Shalby Sanar Hospital, says, 'Early-onset Alzheimer's is diagnosed in people under 65, but cases in someone as young as 22, like Vaani, are extremely rare.' Dr. Kaustubh Mahajan from PD Hinduja Hospital adds that such cases may occur only due to rare genetic mutations: 'It's called early-onset Alzheimer's dementia. If it's seen in the 20s, it's extremely rare and likely genetically linked to mutations like APP or TSEN.' What are the actual symptoms of Alzheimer's? In the film, Vaani experiences dizziness, fainting, and sudden memory loss after emotional trauma. But experts say these are dramatised for cinematic effect. Real early Alzheimer's symptoms, as listed by the NHS, typically include: Difficulty remembering recent events or conversations Misplacing everyday objects Repeating questions Struggling to find words Trouble with decision-making Hesitation in trying new tasks Dr. Singla explains, 'Symptoms like fainting or instant memory loss after seeing someone are not typical of Alzheimer's. These scenes are dramatised to serve the film's narrative.' Experts call it 'exaggerated,' but conversation-worthy One key scene shows Vaani forgetting the last six months after a sudden emotional trigger—a plot twist neurologists say doesn't align with medical evidence. Dr. Singla remarked, 'They've exaggerated it for the sake of storytelling. Alzheimer's doesn't progress this fast, especially in someone that young.' He further added, 'Depression can be an early sign of dementia, but Alzheimer's itself isn't triggered by emotional shocks. These are more 'masala' elements.' Despite the medical inaccuracies, doctors and critics alike agree the film plays a vital role—it gets people talking about memory health.

Bigg Boss fame Ankit Gupta tells Farah Khan he was hospitalised following ‘gastric and panic attack': ‘Aisa laga kabhi bhi saans aana bandh ho jayegi'

Bigg Boss 16 contestant Ankit Gupta recently opened up about suffering from an emergency, following which he had to be hospitalised. Revealing that he has currently stopped eating meat, Gupta told Farah Khan on her cooking show, 'I had a gastric and panic attack because of which I was hospitalised.' Revealing the symptoms he experienced, the 36-year-old continued: 'During a panic attack, there is breathlessness, palpitations, and blood pressure shoots up. Aisa laga kabhi bhi saans aana bandh ho jayegi. (It feels like I won't be able to breathe at any moment).' He added that he now follows a strict diet, as a result of which he looks leaner. 'Every time, I have to click a photo of what I am eating or drinking. I have to share it,' he said. Why do gastric and panic attack scenarios happen? Dr Narander Singla, lead consultant, internal medicine, CK Birla Hospital®, Delhi, said gastric issues and panic attacks, though different in origin, can produce similar symptoms like chest tightness, palpitations, bloating, and breathlessness, often making it difficult to distinguish between the two. 'Gastric discomfort typically arises from indigestion, acid reflux, or gas buildup, which can irritate the diaphragm and even the vagus nerve, causing a fluttering heart or unease. Common triggers include overeating, spicy or fatty foods, eating too quickly, or lying down immediately after meals,' said Dr Singla. Panic attacks are sudden episodes of intense anxiety or fear, often triggered by stress, trauma, or underlying mental health conditions. 'They can mimic heart problems, leading to chest pain, a racing heartbeat, dizziness, and a sense of impending doom,' said Dr Singla. It's important to observe when symptoms occur, after meals, during stressful moments, or randomly. 'Note accompanying signs such as bloating, belching (suggesting gastric causes), or overwhelming fear and hyperventilation (indicating a panic response). Keeping a symptom diary can help your doctor differentiate the cause,' said Dr Singla. If symptoms are frequent, severe, or interfering with daily life, consult a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis. 'Managing triggers through dietary changes, stress reduction, and timely medical intervention can significantly improve both gastric and panic-related symptoms,' said Dr Singla. HRA exemption glitch in ITR utility: What salaried taxpayers must do

The income tax department's ITR utilities for Assessment Year 2025-26, released late last week, are facing a critical glitch that could impact lakhs of salaried taxpayers claiming House Rent Allowance (HRA) exemption. Himank Singla, a chartered accountant, flagged the issue on X, highlighting that the utility wrongly asks taxpayers to enter their 'place of work' instead of 'place of residence' to compute HRA exemption under Section 10(13A). 'If you live in a metro but work in a non-metro, entering your work city will reduce your exemption incorrectly and vice versa,' Singla wrote. Under the Income Tax Act, 50 per cent of salary qualifies as HRA exemption for metro cities (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata) and 40 per cent for non-metros. The exemption is determined by where the taxpayer lives, not where they are employed. How are taxpayers impacted? 'This mismatch can lead to reduced HRA exemptions and inflate taxable income for those living in metros but working elsewhere,' said Vishwanathan Iyer, senior associate professor of Finance at Great Lakes Institute of Management, Chennai. 'It may also trigger defective return notices from the tax department in cases of over-claimed exemptions.' Employees opting for the old tax regime are particularly vulnerable, explained Naveen Wadhwa, vice-president at Taxmann. 'Until the utility is fixed, taxpayers should enter their place of residence in the field asking for place of work to ensure accurate computation,' he suggested. What to do if you've already filed? Taxpayers who have already filed using the faulty utility can revise their returns. 'You can file a revised return without penalty if done before the deadline,' said Iyer, adding that proof of residence and rent receipts must be retained. Wadhwa also advised filing a grievance with the Centralised Processing Centre (CPC) as an alternate remedy. Wait for a fix or act now? Experts are divided on whether taxpayers should wait for the department to release an updated utility. 'It is safer to compute HRA manually and file now to avoid missing the due date,' said Suresh Surana, chartered accountant. Niyati Shah of 1 Finance, however, suggested waiting or using an offline JSON utility. 'Filing now with incorrect data may result in reduced refunds or defective return notices, leading to double the effort later,' she cautioned.

Vijay singla Graft case: Voice sample did not match: Mann after clean chit to former minister

Three years after sacking his Cabinet colleague Dr Vijay Singla, following the allegations of corruption, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Thursday said that Singla got a clean chit 'because the voice sample in the case did not match with his voice during the forensic examination'. Asked whether Singla would be re-inducted into the Cabinet after the clean chit, Mann said, 'No, he will not be re-inducted. Induction and removal in the Cabinet keep happening. We have 15 ministers in the Cabinet.' Mann was responding to a question about why Singla was given a clean chit by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau when he was dropped from his Cabinet, following allegations of seeking a bribe, with his voice being recorded in a sting operation. On May 24, 2022, Mann had sacked health minister Singla, following the allegation that he had demanded 'a one per cent cut in tenders' allotment and purchase of goods related to the department'. Based on video evidence, Mann had sacked Singla and stated that he had directed the police to register a case against him. The CM had said Singla confessed to his crime. The complaint was made by a superintending engineer posted on deputation with the Punjab Health Systems Corporation (PHSC), Rajinder Singh, who had conducted the sting operation on the minister and his OSD Pardeep Kumar. Mohali police had registered a case against Singla and his OSD under sections 7 and 8 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. The FIR had named Singla as the health minister of Punjab. Later, both were arrested. In the video message, Mann had said, 'Through his sacking, I also wanted to convey the message of zero tolerance for corruption to everyone, including AAP's own people.' The Vigilance Bureau's closure report last month came as a huge embarrassment to the state government. Besides, it also gave opposition parties the much-needed ammo to fire fresh salvos at the AAP government. While sacking him, Mann had said, 'A case was brought to my notice that a minister in my Cabinet was seeking one per cent commission for each tender and purchase related to his department. Only I knew about this case; neither the media nor the opposition knew it. Had I wanted, then I would have covered it up. Had I done so, I would not have failed my conscience, but also those lakhs of people who trusted in me. I am taking strong action against him. I am sacking him from my Cabinet and directing the police to take action against him. He has confessed to this crime.' 'As you all know, we are an honest government. We will not tolerate corruption of even Re 1. Whenever I visit people in villages, towns and cities, I see hope in their eyes. I saw they had hope that there would be someone who would pull them out of corruption. When I was to be announced the chief ministerial face, AAP's revolutionary chief Arvind Kejriwal had said that he would not tolerate bribery and corruption, and I had promised him that we would run this government the same way. I assured him that we would not spare anyone involved in corruption,' Mann had added. The CM had said that the AAP government had 'zero tolerance for corruption'. 'This has happened for the second time in the country. In 2015, Kejriwal had sacked his food and civil supplies minister after a video of him seeking a bribe was shown to him. I want to tell everyone that I would not tolerate corruption for even Re 1. So, straighten yourself. We had taken an oath at martyr Bhagat Singh's Khatkar Kalan village, we had promised that we would run a corruption-free government. This is a historic decision of the AAP.' During the party's campaign in different states, Mann had raised Singla's corruption case and his government's stand of zero tolerance for corruption, even against ministers.

Murder accused cow vigilante dies by suicide, alleges harassment by Bajrang Dal in video sent to wife

Cow vigilante Lokesh Singla, accused in the murder and lynching of two Muslim men in Bhiwani in 2023, died allegedly by suicide on July 5, police said. The development comes a month a video, allegedly recorded by Singla before his death and accusing senior Bajrang Dal members of mental harassment, went viral. A FIR was registered on Tuesday based on a complaint filed by his wife. The police have invoked the offences of abetment to suicide and criminal acts done by multiple accused with a common intention. In the video, purpotedly sent to his wife on WhatsApp, three individuals have been accused of stalking, threatening, and attempting to frame him. 'These men are harassing me, sending people to follow me, and trying to implicate me in fabricated cases,' he said in the video Rajesh Kumar Chechi, Deputy Superintendent of the Government Railway Police Faridabad, said, 'We will look into all the allegations throughly. All the three named in the video have been made accused in the FIR. The investigation is on. The body was released to the family after the autopsy.' A Bajrang Dal member on condition of anonymity said in his personal capacity that due process of law should be followed. 'If Bajrang Dal members or anyone else has been named there should be strict action and a fair investigation regardless.' Singla's body was recovered near the train tracks on the Agra-Palwal route. He has three kids. The Indian Express earlier reported that Singla was an informer and witness for the police in Haryana's Nuh district during raids on alleged cattle smugglers, even accompanying police teams on raids. Singla was among 13 accused initially named in connection with the alleged murder of Junaid and Nasir, and are part of cow vigilante groups. The list also includes Monu Manesar, a Bajrang Dal member and face of the cow protection task force of the Haryana government in Gurgaon. A January 19 FIR in Ferozepur Jhirka station describes Singla as a member of a cow protection group. It stated that he had informed police that three men involved in cattle smuggling would be going to Rajasthan's Ghatmika village and that they can be nabbed if a raid is conducted. Incidentally, Junaid and Nasir hailed from the same village.
