Two college graduates are back teaching in their hometown of Sioux City

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — Summer is swiftly approaching, which means seniors are gearing up to take on college. After finishing college, you'd expect to find a career someplace else, but two locals are finding themselves back at where their journeys began, and this time, they're the teachers. 'We are so ridiculously blessed and lucky and happy and fortunate to have a bunch of kids who have graduated from Mrs. Bryce's Education Pathway, and then they've gone on to college, and now, they're right back in our district being teachers, and with a teacher shortage, not only in the district, but in the area and nationally. This is a crucial component to what we do here at the Career Academy.' said Eric Kilburn, Sioux City Career Academy principal. Andy Markowski, who will be the new kindergarten teacher at Bryant Elementary, said finding his passion for teaching was all from the career academy. 'It really opened my eyes because I was still kind of exploring what I wanted to do. There were a bunch of pathways. I was thinking about, and I took a couple of classes here, and it just kind of opened my eyes, and this is what I want to do for the rest of my life,' explained Andy Markowski. Ellie Nava will be a science teacher at East Middle School. Nava said she's always wanted to help people but didn't know where to start at first. Nava questioned if the Sioux City School District would be the right place for her. 'I found myself wondering whether this is the place for me since I had been here for so many years, but the more I'm here, the more I feel like I fit,' said Nava After hard work, both Markowsky and Nava said they are excited for this new journey. 'I am eager to take on the responsibility, and I feel like I can definitely see those avenues where I want to kind of make a change or really get hands on to make sure that I can benefit where I'm going,' said Nava 'I'm excited to get started. It was nerve wracking at first because I'm graduating a whole year early, so getting started at such an early age compared to some of these other teachers who have gone to school for four years, but I feel like I'm ready' said Markowsky. Both Markowski and Nava will begin teaching this upcoming school year. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Big Brothers Big Sisters participate in 10th annual Earth Day clean up

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — A local non-profit organization is stepping up to help keep a part of Sioux City clean of litter on Tuesday. Around 20 people with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Siouxland went to Kelly Park to pick up the trash. This is the 10th year that the non-profit has cleaned up the park on Earth Day. The City of Sioux City partnered with the organization to provide vests and bags to those picking up the garbage. Non-profit officials said cleaning up Kelly Park is a teamwork event for the 'Bigs' and the 'Littles.' Flood victims receive help from Sioux City Career Academy students 'Probably just since its Earth Day to help the Earth and clean up, so animals don't get hurt,' said a 'Little' with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Siouxland. 'Such a beautiful day on Earth Day, cleaning up, and getting to hang out with our littles, so that's pretty awesome,' said a 'Big' with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Siouxland. 'I think it's a great teamwork event. You have one person holding the bag. You have one person picking up and spotting for each other. And I think it's a good lesson for them that you have to do something more than just yourself. And that's what they learn in their mentoring,' said Kim Wilson, marketing & special events director with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Siouxland. After the 'Bigs' and the 'Littles' collected the trash in the park, they played a game of kickball. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Flood victims receive help from Sioux City Career Academy students

JEFFERSON, S.D. (KCAU) – Almost a year after historic flooding, Siouxland families continue to repair their homes, and one house in South Dakota is receiving help from the Sioux City Career Academy. Roughly four feet of water was inside the home, but thanks to a group of students, the house is coming together nicely. Beverly Loof and her husband were some of the many people impacted by the 2024 flood, but thankfully, they were out of town when it happened. 'We weren't able to get back in here ten days later, and when we did get in here, there was no more off-white carpet,' Loof said. 'It was just mud and it was pretty devastating.' Iowa Gov. Reynolds signs bill to help 2024 flood, tornado victims Due to the high water, the Loofs had to throw out many items. 'Everything looked like a tornado had went through the inside and everything was mixed up and turned upside down,' Loof said. 'And we put a dumpster outside and all my new furniture and everything went in the dumpster.' Once the house was cleared, the next step was getting the house back to its former glory. With help from the community, repairs slowly took place over the next several months. Then, Renae Hansen with the McCook Lake Izaak Walton League made a call that would expedite everything. 'The Sioux City Career Academy has a lot of kids and it's towards the end of the year,' Hansen said. 'I was hoping by chance that I would be able to utilize some of their skills out here. When I called, they said it was like divine intervention because they've got 60 kids with limited projects to get them through the end of the year.' For the past couple of weeks, the Loofs' house has been booming with students. 'We've been working here doing drywall,' 11th grader Beau Smallcomb said. 'It's a little difficult, but once you get to know what you're doing and practice, it's pretty easy.' Sioux City awarded $25k to help create Homeless Court Program While there is still much to do before the house is complete, Beverly Loof says she can't thank these students enough. 'It's been amazing to see these young men and ladies, you know, be able to do this type of work.' she said. 'My husband's not able to do it anymore. And for them to come out here and spend their time and do it the best they can, it's been amazing. We wouldn't be this far without Renae and the academy.' 'It feels good to help people that need it because, you know, they're older, and they shouldn't be having to do it themselves,' Smallcomb said. A Sioux City Career Academy instructor said they'll be working on the house for about another week. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
