Scottie Scheffler sees off Jon Rahm's challenge to win US PGA Championship

Just when it looked as if Scottie Scheffler – he of the unflappable temperament and ridiculously repeatable swing – was going to do the unthinkable and actually throw away a commanding advantage, so the world No 1 restated his quality to saunter to the 107th US PGA Championship. A procession had shockingly become his recession, but then, as all inscrutable conquerors invariably manage to, he turned it back into procession as he strolled home to celebrate his third major title and, just as notably, his first that is not a green jacket. On this five-shot winning evidence, and in the belief that the 28-year-old was not at his very best, who is going against him to prevail at both Oakmont and and Royal Portrush in the next nine weeks and so emulate Rory McIlroy's achievement in completing the career grand slam last month? His final round 71 for an 11-under 273-total was ultimately hard-earned, but there was also plenty in reserve. As Xander Schauffele intimated, it is ominous for the rest. 'It's a cliche, but he just does all those small things really well,' Schauffele, the defending champion said. 'I played with him in the first two rounds, and he didn't hit it great. He finished strong, which he always does, gives himself some sort of momentum. Then goes and practises after his rounds, does his thing with his team, and he rinses and repeats.' The moment Scottie Scheffler won the PGA Championship! 🏆 — Sky Sports Golf (@SkySportsGolf) May 18, 2025 Jon Rahm will fancy having another shot at the world No 1 after forcing him to fix a faltering swing on the back nine and produce the decisive patch of birdies. Scheffler, who went out with a three-shot cushion over playing partner Alex Noren, bogeyed the first after pulling his drive and dropped two more due to the same tee-shot failing on the sixth and ninth to provide his pursuers with unexpected chink of light. Credit to the Spaniard for being the only chaser to respond. The two-time major champion was courageously cavalier in taking advantage of Scheffler's attack of the lefts, picking up three birdies in four holes from the eighth and he should be thanked for resurrecting a contest from a one-man show. When he rolled in a 15-footer on the par-four 11th – after finding the fairway bunker off the tee – he was actually level with Scheffler. He had started five shots off the pace and apart from Justin Thomas's seven-stroke comeback in 2022, one had to go back 30 years to when Steve Elkington broke Colin Montgomerie's heart for a bigger deficit to be breached. Jon Rahm with a birdie to take the co-lead! 😲🔝 — Sky Sports Golf (@SkySportsGolf) May 18, 2025 With respect to Monty, he is no Scheffler and the crowd almost fell silent in the realisation that the great front-runner had been caught. This was the Texan's eighth 54-hole lead and he had converted the previous seven into silverware. Yet, crucially, Scheffler was never passed and when he birdied the par-five 10th, he was ahead again. This is when Rahm essentially lost it, not with any poor play on his part, but simply because he could not convert the opportunities he carved out for himself. A 20-footer unluckily lipped out of the 13th, a seven-footer was skewed on the 14th and a 10-footer dribbled wide on the 15th. These were all for birdies and even if just two had dropped then pressure would have piled on Scheffler (if he knows such a thing exists). But after he had made a fine up and down for a birdie on the driveable 14th, before birdieing the next par-five, and with Rahm finally making his first bogey of the day on the 16th, Scheffler was able to step up to 'The Green Mile' – the nickname for the treacherous three holes which conclude Quail Hollow and in many respects define this layout – with essentially a stress-free path to the Wanamaker Trophy. Family first ❤️ — Sky Sports Golf (@SkySportsGolf) May 18, 2025 The unholy trinity might well be one of the most demanding closing stretches in golf, but Scheffler was not about to spaff another yawning gap, especially when Rahm, by now a glowering Basque brute of what-could-have-beens, dunked it into the water on the par-three 17th when understandably going flag-hunting. Rahm had expended so much energy in hunting down, if only for the briefest sniff of his scalp, and it was a shame his challenge finished in an ambulance, as he double-bogeyed the 18th for a 73 that left him in a tie for eighth on five-under. Rahm is the type of competitor who believes that 'second is nowhere' and should take heart from the manner in which he made this into a fight. His return to major form only renders the prospects of the US Open and Open yet more enticing. Bryson DeChambeau is now a perennial contender and with Harris English – who came from nowhere with a 65 to reach seven-under – claimed a share for second alongside Davis Riley (72). DeChambeau wasted so many birdie putts in his 70. Alas, England's long wait for another US PGA title now stretches to 107 years. Matt Fitzpatrick raised hopes when he chipped in for an eagle two on the 14th. He was only two behind and on the 15th was presented with a six-footer to move to nine-under. The 30-year-old missed and on the 16th compounded this error when he yanked a four-footer for a par. All that was left was the merciless Green Mile to gobble him up with bogeys on the 17th and 18th to fall back to five-under and on to the same mark as Rahm. Fitzpatrick must also take the positives after such an awful run. Congrats to Scottie. He is many things as a player. However I believe his best trait is that of being a phenomenal COMPETITOR !! An example- He made 10 bogeys this week and he followed those 6 times with birdies on the very next hole !! @SkySportsGolf @GolfChannel — Paul McGinley (@mcginleygolf) May 18, 2025 'I knew it was going to be a challenging day. To finish off a major championship is always difficult, and I did a good job of staying patient on the front nine. 'I did not have my best stuff but I kept myself in it, stepped up on the back nine and had a really good nine holes. It was a battle out there all four days. I am looking forward to celebrating this one.' Congrats to Scottie Scheffler on an incredible performance. Clearly #1 in the world. 👍👍 — Phil Mickelson (@PhilMickelson) May 18, 2025 The verdict is in. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is the PGA Champion. — Nike (@Nike) May 18, 2025 Oops! 🏆😆 — Sky Sports Golf (@SkySportsGolf) May 18, 2025 'The last two days he [Scottie Scheffler] has been sensational. He does exactly what he needs to do and plots his way around the golf course. 'When he gets in trouble or out of position, his chipping is sensational and he can putt as well. He is a seriously good player and I have never seen someone with a demeanour such as his on a golf course. 'It is reminiscent of the great Bernhard Langer the way he goes about it; it is kind of Bjorn Borg 'ice man' stuff.' Scottie Scheffler follows Rory McIlroy in winning a major in 2025. Here is what the major schedule looks like for this year: The Masters: Rory McIlroy US PGA Championship: Scottie Scheffler US Open: Oakmont, June 12-15 The Open: Royal Portrush, July 17-20 'It is a special walk. When you come to learn the family man Scottie Scheffler, even more so with Bennett and Meredith alongside him. 'It all came together for the Scheffler household. What a performance in the end. 'He looked on the ropes on the front nine but never ever panicked and in the end he does what we thought he would do.' As he goes on the long walk to hand in his scorecard, he walks hand-in-hand with his wife Meredith and his son Bennett in his arms. Family first ❤️ — Sky Sports Golf (@SkySportsGolf) May 18, 2025 Scottie Scheffler is your 2025 PGA Champion🏆#PGAChamp — PGA Championship (@PGAChampionship) May 18, 2025 The stage is Scheffler's to finish off the job. He misses the par putt but it does not matter. He taps in the bogey and wins his third career major. Scheffler is now halfway to the career grand slam, after two wins at The Masters. Plenty of emotion from Scheffler, slamming his cap into the ground. He goes to find his family and the tears are flowing. The victory was by five shots in the end. The moment Scottie Scheffler won the PGA Championship! 🏆 — Sky Sports Golf (@SkySportsGolf) May 18, 2025 That is why he is going to be champion this week. His third into the green is sublime, leaving him a gettable par. He walks to the green, embracing his caddie and in tears. An emotional Scheffler, knowing he is about to be crowned 2025 US PGA champion. The American gets his par on the last and finishes on six under, in a tie for second with DeChambeau and English. Behind DeChambeau missed the fairway to the right and takes the sensible option and chips into the fairway rather than go for the green. A slightly easier decision to make when you have a six-shot lead mind. Not often does a player get to walk down the last with a six-shot lead. Scheffler has already won a fair number of titles in his career but he should enjoy this. He has been consistent and fully deserving of another major title. Scheffler nails his par putt into the middle of the hole and heads to 18 at 12 under, six shots clear. What a glorious walk that will be, as will the walk down the last. It was such a good round for a long time for the Spaniard but boy has it fallen apart in the closing stages. You have to respect him going for it all out but finishes bogey, double bogey, double bogey to end up on four under. It has become a little bit of procession now for Scheffler down the final few holes rather than being under huge pressure, which looked like being the case half an hour ago. Scheffler knows so long as he does not find the water, he will virtually have the trophy in his hands. Even if he did hit it in the water, he still has enough of a buffer. Scheffler plays it safe and bails out to the right. Pragmatic! Scheffler's task is even easier now as Poston bogeys 17 to drop to six under. That means as Scheffler tees up on 17, he has a six-shot lead. Playing alongside Poston is Riley, who makes birdie to join Poston on six under. 'It was a good test of golf. I wish a couple of things had gone my way a little bit more, it felt like it did not go my way all week. 'It has burned a fire in my stomach and made me want to fight harder. It sucks, but Scottie [Scheffler] is playing incredible golf, he is an incredible golfer. 'I have got to figure out how to get up to his level. This will only add fuel to the fire.' Scheffler does not need to take any risks and that is such sensible, pragmatic play at 15. He sinks a short par putt and remains at 12 under, five shots clear of Poston with two to play. Rahm is going to fall further and further down the leaderboard. His tee shot on 18 leaks to the left and ends up in the creek. Things were looking strong for Rahm five or six holes to go but it is falling apart at 'Green Mile'. Rahm's challenge is well and truly over as he makes a double bogey on 17. That drops him to six under and he is now in third place, with Poston up into second on seven under. DeChambeau's par putt on 18 goes around the hole and he ends up with a bogey to finish on six under after a round of 70. The world number one sinks the easy birdie putt and moves to -12. He has one hand and probably slightly more on that trophy. Rahm is aggressive at the par-three 17th and goes for the pin but overdoes it and finds the water over the back. Has that just handed Scheffler the trophy? Back on 15 Scheffler nestles his eagle putt close to the hole and he is edging closer to the title. Rahm needs this birdie putt on 16 and, looking from behind, it looked in all the way but goes sliding by the left edge of the hole. That bogey for Rahm means Scheffler has a three-shot lead. Is that Rahm's challenge over? Scottie doing Scottie things. He makes the clutch putt on 14 from around eight feet and goes to 11 under, two shots clear of Rahm now, and has the par-five 15th to come, where he could extend his lead to three before heading to 'Green Mile'. DeChambeau has a long birdie putt on 17 that goes close but it does not drop. He remains at seven under, three of the lead. Back on 16 Rahm's second ends up in the bunker to the right of the green. It will be very tricky from there to get a birdie but a par would not be a bad result. Scheffler has a tricky bunker shot at 14, very similar to the one Rahm had a little while ago. He gets it within ten feet and will have the chance to go two clear of Rahm. Meanwhile Rahm's tee shot at 16 is a little wayward and misses the fairway to the left. Scheffler was sublime in the closing stretches yesterday, which set up the lead he took into today. He would take just some of the magic he had during his third round. This is a huge putt for Rahm, having been a little heavy-handed with his eagle effort. But he drags it wide of the left and that is a huge missed chance. That could prove decisive in this tussle between Rahm and Scheffler, with the latter still having good birdie chances coming up at 14 and 15. Rahm is heading to the 'Green Mile', which will be a huge test. That is the Yorkshireman's race run as the 'Green Mile' bites hard. A bogey on 16 is followed up by a bogey on 17 and he is now at five under. Back at 13 our leader Scheffler comes close to sinking a lengthy birdie putt but he cannot drain it. He remains at ten under. Scheffler has an outside shot at a birdie but he leaves his putt short so he will stay at ten under, one clear of Rahm. The Spaniard is up on the 15th and he knows he needs to take advantage of that par five with the tough run coming up over the final three holes. Can Rahm join Scheffler on ten under with a birdie at 14? No he cannot and he knew it straight away as the putt slides past the right of the hole. He was very unlucky with his tee shot that it ended up in the bunker. At 16 that feels like Fitzpatrick's race run after missing a short putt for par to drop to six under. DeChambeau is not giving up as he makes a birdie on the 15th to join Fitzpatrick and Poston on seven under, three off the lead. Scheffler was lining up a birdie chance to go two clear at the top but it slides past the left edge. Noren makes bogey for the second straight hole and he is now at five under. Up on the 12 Poston makes a birdie to join Fitzpatrick in a tie for third on seven under. On the par-three 13th, the Spaniard thinks he is about to sink a lengthy birdie putt to join Scheffler on -10 but it goes around the hole. Meanwhile on 10 Scheffler's second is fantastic and he will have the chance to go two clear of Rahm. Up on 15 Fitzpatrick just misses a birdie putt to spurn a great chance to move to eight under. He knows he needs those if he is going to have any chance of winning this. There will be a three-hole play-off down the 'Green Mile'; 16, 17 and 18. The player with the best aggregate score will win but if they are still tied through three play-off holes then it goes to sudden death. That is why Scheffler has had a lot of success in his career already. He makes an important birdie on ten to go one shot clear. DeChambeau did make a birdie on 14 to go to six under. Rahm comes close a birdie on 12 but it narrowly misses. He remains at nine under but back at the tenth... A long way to go, but if Jon Rahm does prevail here this evening then he will be going for the career grand slam at Royal Portrush in July. And the Spaniard has won the Irish Open twice on links in the Emerald Isle. Up on the 14th, Bryson's tee shot misses the green to the right and it is a tough lie. We saw Scott have difficulty in a similar position not long ago but Bryson has played that to perfection to set up a good birdie chance. Back on the 12th... Rory McIlroy declined to speak to the media for the fourth day in a row here at the 107th US PGA Championship, as he finished outside of the top 40. His mood was obviously in stark contrast with that in winning the Masters last month. And as one wag put it, 'from the grand slam to the trunk slam'. McIlroy has never before made a cut at a professional tournament and refused to talk after any of the rounds. His silence inevitably leaves so many unanswered questions – mainly concerning technical aspects and a replacement driver and, naturally, about any comedown from Augusta, where he finally realised a lifelong dream and so joined Ben Hogan, Gene Sarazen, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Tiger Woods as the immortals to achieve the clean sweep of majors. Why did he look so flat and why was his performance so mediocre at Quail Hollow venue where he has won titles, more than at any other course? The queries hung heavily in the humid Charlotte air and presumably we will receive no further insight until he plays again in a fortnight. For more from James Corrigan, click here. Maybe he is not out of contention! A superb eagle from the Yorkshireman has jettisoned him to seven under, two off the lead. Behind on the 13th DeChambeau's chances seem to have disappeared with a bogey on 13 to drop him back to five under. Rahm's tee shot on the 11th found the bunker but his second is sublime, finding the middle of the green. Can he sink the birdie putt? Yes he can and he joins Scheffler on nine under for the lead. He then drills his tee shot down the 12th fairway and he is looking on it. The momentum is with him. Jon Rahm with a birdie to take the co-lead! 😲🔝 — Sky Sports Golf (@SkySportsGolf) May 18, 2025 His putt comes up just short and taps in for bogey. His lead has now been cut to one as he hits the turn. Scheffler's third is not great and he is under some pressure now. This is going to be a swing of sorts here and there is mud on Scheffler's ball, which has rolled off the back of the green. If his first putt is not spot on, we could have co-leaders in a few moments time. Scheffler has gone wide to the left off the tee so many times today and he has done so again at the ninth. His lie for the second is not great and he ends up laying up, whether he intended to or not. Up on the 12th DeChambeau spurns yet another birdie chance. On another day Bryson could be right up with Scheffler, not four shots off him. Fitzpatrick also misses a birdie opportunity on 13. The gap at the top is now just two. Those Spanish hands serve him nicely on the tenth and he taps in a simple birdie putt. He is up to eight under and two behind Scheffler. The Yorkshireman is punished for inaccuracy off the tee on the 12th with a bogey and he drops back to five under. DeChambeau has another birdie chance at 11 but he sees his birdie effort slide by. Scheffler's birdie putt on the eighth looked like it was heading in but it misses to the left. Noren will step up next for his birdie putt to close the gap to two but he cannot take advantage. Scheffler is on the eighth tee and his drive goes quite far left. A good chip from a tricky spot will set up a birdie chance but that is far from an easy task. The American has gone back-to-back birdies at seven and eight to move to six under alongside English, Vegas, DeChambeau, Fitzpatrick and Scott. Scheffler's birdie putt slides by and he has to settle for par to stay at ten under. The slightly errant tee shot proved costly for our leader. Noren has the chance to join Rahm on seven under and he takes it with a birdie. After his tee shot misses the fairway to the left, Scheffler has to lay up to the par-five seventh. His third is decent but it will not be an easy putt to make birdie. DeChambeau is being aggressive today but it is not currently benefitting him too much. His third into the par-five tenth gives him a tough birdie putt, which he cannot make, so he stays at six under. Finau drops a shot at 10 to drop to -5. After a stunning chip on from the back of the green at the eighth, Rahm sinks the shorty birdie putt and moves to seven under, three off Scheffler's lead. Back on seven Riley has had an absolute mare; a shot into the water has been followed up by a series of terrible putts. He walks off with a triple bogey and is now three under. Completely out of contention now. Riley was in second on seven under just a few holes ago but it feels like his challenge is probably over. A bogey on six has been followed up by a sloppy seventh, where he has found the water and will drop at least one shot. Scheffler sunk a difficult par putt on five but he cannot save par on the sixth. His lead is cut from five shots to four. Can anyone now put more pressure on the leader? Fitzpatrick joins the collection of players on six under with a birdie on 10. DeChambeau joins the gaggle on six under with a birdie on nine as he makes the turn. Five off the lead, with Scheffler having a nervy putt coming up on the sixth to save par. Finau also makes birdie on nine and another player moves to six under. Up on the ninth Finau's second is sublime and is very close to going in for eagle. One hole ahead is Australian Adam Scott, who birdies the tenth to join a number of players on six under. Riley got to seven under with a birdie on the fifth but he drops that shot immediately with a bogey on six. Scheffler now leads by five shots with Rahm, Riley, Noren and English on -6. Scheffler has a long, downhill left-to-right putt to save par on the fifth and he sinks the putt. That is clutch! Noren had a birdie chance but his putt slides to the left of the hole. After a sublime second shot into the ninth, the Yorkshireman rolls in his birdie putt to move to five under. One man already at five under is DeChambeau, who remains there after his birdie effort on eight slides past the hole. Not going Bryson's way today. DeChambeau said he was going to go for it today and he is. At the short par-four eighth his tee shot comes up just short of the green and he definitely goes for the hole with his second but it runs on by and he will have a challenge getting a birdie now. Back on the fifth Riley has made a birdie to move into second place on seven under. Scheffler's birdie putt is not great, leaving him a tricky putt for par but he sinks it. Noren has made bogey so Scheffler's lead is now up to five shots. It has been a slow start for DeChambeau but finally he makes his first birdie of the day at the par-five seventh to return to five under, where he started the day. Rahm has another crucial putt to save par, this time on the fifth, and he makes it to remain at six under, five off Scheffler's lead. Not enough players are putting pressure on Scheffler currently. The latest is Poston, who bogeys the fourth to drop to five under. Scheffler demonstrates his prowess from the bunkers as he is just inches away from landing the birdie chip. Another roll of the ball and that was in. The leader saves par. Noren has a birdie putt to cut Scheffler's lead to three shots but he cannot take advantage. Up on the 15th Chilean Niemann comes so, so close to an eagle and settles for a birdie to improve to five under. Back on the third Scheffler found the fairway with his tee shot but his second shot is not his best and finds the left-side bunker. Rahm saves par with a gutsy putt on the fourth. American Harris English currently holds that honour. He birdies the last to cap off a fantastic round of 65 to move to six under. As he seems to always do, Scheffler takes advantage of a slice of luck and bounces back immediately with a birdie to return to 11 under. That was a fantastic putt and his lead is now up to four shots. Ominous? You will not believe it! Scheffler got away with the lie and has a clear sight to the green. He takes advantage of the lucky break with a good approach shot and sets up a birdie chance to return to 11 under. DeChambeau meanwhile on the fifth has made an error by bombing a birdie putt past the hole and then cannot sink the par so drops back to four under. Is that the end of his challenge for the day as he is six shots off the lead? Scheffler immediately dislikes his tee shot on the second and quickly there are shouts of 'Fore Left!'. Plenty of spectators scurry to try and find it. There have been a few already who has missed that way today, including DeChambeau and Si Woo Kim. Bryson saved par but Si Woo did not. Noren cannot take advantage with a scrappy tee shot of his own. It is a shaky start for Noren, whose bunker shot was not the best and he immediately drops a shot to seven under. Can Scheffler save par from about eight feet away? No he cannot as his effort slides by the right edge. Our leader drops to -10 but his lead is still three shots due to Noren's bogey. Scottie Scheffler starts his final round with bogey! — Sky Sports Golf (@SkySportsGolf) May 18, 2025 Scheffler is in a great position on the fairway off the tee on the first but he finds the bunker on the left of the green. The world number one has been sublime from bunkers this week so may fancy chipping out for birdie. Noren found the bunker on the other side. DeChambeau meanwhile has continued his run of pars at the fourth. Just one man currently within four shots of the leader Scheffler; Noren. On the par-three fourth DeChambeau elects for a nine iron on a 192-yard hole and he comes up short. He cannot believe it but maybe he regrets his choice of club. Back on the first American Davis Riley has made bogey and drops to six under. J.T. Poston has done exactly the same as Riley. Here is the world number one, leading the way on 11 under, looking in good spirits and why would he not be? No surprise, he hits the fairway! Plenty of support for Scheffler on the first tee. Noren is playing alongside Scheffler and starts this final round three shots behind on -8. Noren has not long come back from four months out with a hamstring injury so will be delighted to start the final day in second place. Can he challenge Scheffler for the title? Up at the third DeChambeau played a sublime second shot having missed the fairway to the left but he cannot sink his birdie effort. The Spaniard begins with a par. His playing partner Si Woo Kim bogeys the first and drops to five under. A rollercoaster already for Fitzpatrick. He made back-to-back bogeys to start his final round but has now registered consecutive birdies to return to where he started; five under. There are not many times when you see golfers of this calibre when you are left perplexed but this is one of those moments. DeChambeau has a birdie chance on the second but his effort is dreadful, leaving him a tricky putt to save par, which he does make. Finau also made a par. Back on the first long-time leader Vegas makes a bogey and drops to five under. The 2021 US Open champion and 2023 Masters winner Rahm is getting his final round started. He begins round four on six under and he starts in great fashion with a superb drive down the middle of the fairway. He is playing alongside South Korean Si Woo Kim today. At the third Fitzpatrick has bounced back from consecutive bogeys on the first and second with a birdie on the first to move to four under. Jon Rahm is just under 10 minutes away from the start of his final round but he has just had a catch up with McIlroy in the car par. McIlroy is already getting in his car to leave but had time to give Rahm some words of wisdom and a pat on the back of good luck. Despite finding the fairway on the first, DeChambeau's second is wild and requires a top effort to get up and down for par but he does so to remain at five under. If anyone is to challenge the world number one Scheffler today, the likes of DeChambeau are going to have to put some significant early pressure on. Bryson's playing partner Finau also made par to stay at -5. And… Rory McIlroy refused to talk again. Four days in a row. A different sort of grand slam. DeChambeau is on the first tee and starts his last round six shots off Scheffler's lead. He is playing alongside Tony Finau today, who is also on five under. Both players find the fairway and they are under way. The final group, consisting of Scheffler and Swede Alex Noren, start at 7.40pm BST. Not the start Fitzpatrick wanted up on the first green. His second from the fairway missed to the left and he cannot get up and down for par, so he drops back to four under. Nearly a birdie to finish up for Rory but a par ends his week. He finishes on three over. Back at the first Pavon has played a sublime second shot, which gives him a great opportunity of an opening birdie to advance to six under. Speculation in the press room here whether Rory McIlroy will set a personal record by declining to talk to media for a fourth consecutive day. He has never refused the scribblers and microphones after each round. There are obvious questions that need asking about the change of driver head on Tuesday, why he felt obliged to do so and how it affected his challenge. He is on the 18th, one-over for the day, three-over for the tournament and outside the top 50. 74 players have made the cut this week. Of those Scottie is ranked 3 off the tee, 4 in iron play & 6 around the green. Nobody else is close to that consistency through the bag and you wouldn't even say Scottie is at his very best this week so far🤷‍♂️ @SkySportsGolf @GolfChannel — Paul McGinley (@mcginleygolf) May 18, 2025 The defending champion's final round has come to a close with a birdie on the last to finish on one under after a round of 68. Others to have recently finished include Schauffele's playing partner Burns, who has finished on two under, and Fleetwood, who has ended on two over for the tournament. 'You have to figure out something in a hurry, Bryson [DeChambeau], because the wind won't slow in a day! Scottie [Scheffler] can't keep his foot off the gas, Alex Noren is very experienced and if he continues to play well he can be a serious threat. 'Scottie would have to back up a little, but with these breezes it wouldn't be difficult for him to stumble a little. I think he'd have to have a very sloppy round of golf (to not win), which I haven't seen, sloppy and Scheffler doesn't really go together in the same sentence.' The Yorkshireman is under way and begins his final round at five under. His first drive of the day is straight down the fairway and he is playing today alongside Matthieu Pavon. Up on the eighth Viktor Hovland has made an eagle to move into the red and onto one under. McIlroy is on the 17th tee and his shot looks like it is on a good line but there is not enough on it. The ball comes very close to ending up in the water. His chip on leaves him a lengthy putt for par, which he cannot take so he has to settle for a bogey which drops him to three over as he heads to the last. The first two-thirds of the 'Green Mile' have hit Schauffele hard. A double bogey on 16 is followed up by a bogey on the 17th as his par putt slides past the right edge. He drops back to even par and he is seeing more and more dollars slip away. The PGA Championship increased the purse by $500,000 to $19 million, the third-largest prize fund on offer for the men's majors. The winner of the PGA Championship gets $3.42 million (around 2.8 million pounds). 6.40pm: Matthieu Pavon, Matt Fitzpatrick 7pm: Tony Finau, Bryson DeChambeau 7.10pm: Jhonattan Vegas, Keegan Bradley 7.20pm: Jon Rahm, Si Woo Kim 7.30pm: Davis Riley, J.T. Poston 7.40pm: Scottie Scheffler, Alex Noren The defending champion Schauffele has had his momentum stunted by a double bogey. He was not in contention to win but he drops plenty of places down the leaderboard as he goes from three under to one under. Back on the seventh Niemann has just sunk a lengthy eagle putt to move from one under to three under. Burns and Schauffele have had such fine days to advance to three under but they are in strife on the par-four 16th. Burns' second nearly found the water and he has to simply just chip out. Schauffele went in a similar direction and actualy ends up in the water. McIlroy is just shy of the green at the par-five 15th and comes very close to chipping in for eagle. It runs a little bit beyond the hole so a bit of work to do for Rory. He drains the putt and goes back to two over, where he started the day. Over on the 16th Fleetwood has chipped in from just off the green to secure a birdie on the par four. He is two under in his final round and one over for the tournament heading to the final two holes. The Northern Irishman is punished for his venture into the water and a bogey drops him to three over. McIlroy has such a fine record around this course but it has not come together for him this week. Sam Burns and Xander Schauffele are putting together great rounds and it definitely feels like they are bouncing off each other. They both make birdies on the 14th and both advance to three under for the tournament, five under for the day. Playing just behind them is Rory McIlroy, whose tee shot leaked to the left and has found the water just left of the green. Max Homa threw his club down the fairway after a poor shot 😬 — Sky Sports Golf (@SkySportsGolf) May 18, 2025 Scottie Scheffler's bid for a procession to his third major title has not been helped by today's easy pin positions. Think there could be a really low one out there for a Rahm or a DeChambeau. Or, of course, a Scheffler. Englishman Marco Penge has chipped in for eagle on the par-four eighth to move into red and onto one under. Our very own James Corrigan sat down for an interview with Penge, which you can read right here. McIlroy knew going into today that he was not going to be lifting the Wanamaker Trophy at the end of the day and so far it has been a day of little if any movement. He began the round at two over and he is still two over having made his way to the back nine. Not Rory's week. He has received a slice of Scheffler-esque luck from yesterday as his tee shot on the 12th looked to be going miles right but it rebounded into the fairway. Sam Burns and defending champion Xander Schauffele are both four under for the day and two under for the tournament having made the turn. They are very, very unlikely to be in contention come the end of the day but they will want to finish as high up the leaderboard as possible and, as we all know, the prize money increases the further up you go. The likes of Joaquin Niemann, Michael Thorbjornsen and Thorbjorn Olesen are also at two under and are under par for their fourth rounds so far. Sergio Garcia has just finished his final round and been speaking to Sky Sports, saying these are the best of the conditions of the week and expects plenty of good scoring for the rest of the day. Garcia finished his tournament on seven over after a round of 69. 6.40pm: Matthieu Pavon, Matt Fitzpatrick 7pm: Tony Finau, Bryson DeChambeau 7.10pm: Jhonattan Vegas, Keegan Bradley 7.20pm: Jon Rahm, Si Woo Kim 7.30pm: Davis Riley, J.T. Poston 7.40pm: Scottie Scheffler, Alex Noren Another HUGE snake at the PGA Championship 😲🐍 — Sky Sports Golf (@SkySportsGolf) May 18, 2025 Several big names are among the early starters to tee off. Xander Schauffele has made a quick start. He made the turn with a score of three under for the round then birdied the 10th to move to two under. Rory McIlroy is level par for the day and remains at two over. Scottie Scheffler will look to put the finishing touches on a third career major title when he sets off in the final round of the PGA Championship on Sunday at Quail Hollow Club with a three-shot lead over Swede Alex Noren. World number one Scheffler is scheduled to head out in the day's final pairing with Noren at 6.40pm with forecasts calling for breezy conditions and mostly cloudy skies. Scheffler emerged atop the leaderboard late in Saturday's third round with a scintillating finish that saw him cover the last five holes in five under, a stretch that included a tap-in eagle at the par-four 14th hole. 'I have a good opportunity to go out there and try and win the golf tournament,' Scheffler said after the third round. 'But it's going to take another really good round. 'There's a lot of great players chasing me on the leaderboard and someone is going to put up a great round and it's up to me to go out there and have another really good round and finish off the tournament.' Noren is making only his second start of the year after sitting out seven months with tail bone and tendon issues and is seeking his first major title in his 40th start in one of golf's blue-riband events. Sitting four shots off the pace in a two-way share of third place were Davis Riley and fellow American J.T. Poston while Spaniard Jon Rahm was a further shot back with South Korean Kim Si-woo and Venezuelan Jhonattan Vegas. Lurking six shots behind Scheffler is a group of five that includes U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau and U.S. Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley. The pursuers all have their work cut out as the unflappable Scheffler, twice Masters champion, has closed out each of the last seven 54-hole leads he has held on the PGA Tour. In the previous 106 PGA Championships only 16 golfers have entered the final round trailing by three or more strokes and won the Wanamaker. The most recent was Justin Thomas who came back from seven shots in 2022. Rory McIlroy, who made the cut on the number in his first major since completing the career Grand Slam at last month's Masters, went out with the early starters and bogeyed his opening hole.

Stumbling start from Scottie Scheffler throws US PGA Championship wide open

Scheffler took a three-shot lead over Sweden's Alex Noren into the final round and briefly found himself five clear after Noren dropped shots on the first and fourth. The world number one had bounced back with a birdie on the second after also dropping a shot on the first, but bogeyed the sixth and ninth to reach the turn in 37. At nine under par Scheffler had company at the top of the leaderboard from two-time major winner Jon Rahm, who followed seven straight pars with birdies on the eighth, 10th and 11th. Jon Rahm with a birdie to take the co-lead! 😲🔝 — Sky Sports Golf (@SkySportsGolf) May 18, 2025 American Harris English had established a very early clubhouse target of six under after a superb closing 65, but fully intended to catch his scheduled 5pm flight. 'I mean, the best player in the world is even [par] through 3. I don't see him slipping a whole lot,' English said. 'I see myself catching my flight. If we have to turn that thing around, we can do it.' Xander Schauffele had earlier ended the defence of his title as he started it, making a double bogey on the 16th hole and complaining about conditions. Schauffele and Scheffler were the two highest-profile players to speak out about the decision not to allow preferred lies in Thursday's first round, despite torrential rain disrupting practice earlier in the week. Both men blamed 'mud balls' for hooking their second shots to the 16th into the water in round one and the same hole cost Schauffele another six on Sunday, although this time his ire was directed at the 17th instead. Next highest is — Underdog Golf (@UnderdogGolf) May 18, 2025 'After kind of a decent round going, the goal was to try to backdoor a top 10,' said the Open champion, who had covered his first 15 holes in five under par, including a chip-in eagle on the eighth. 'I got greedy on 16, that one was on me. No mud on that ball unfortunately. Hit that in the water (from a fairway bunker). 'Then 17 is a pretty ridiculous set-up today. That will be one to keep an eye on. You have, I don't know, like a 10-foot window to land it to keep it somewhere like pin high.' After dropping a shot on the 17th Schauffele did at least birdie the 18th to complete a 68, his only sub-par round of the week. 'Yeah, I'd like to keep it going,' Schauffele said. 'If we had four more days stacked up right now, I feel like I'd have a pretty good chance. Just kind of lost control of the golf ball there midweek, unfortunately. 'Just didn't have enough to score well, but I feel like I'm playing a lot better than what I'm doing. So just got to hang tough.' Masters champion Rory McIlroy had earlier completed a final round of 72 to finish three over par and declined to speak to the media for the fourth day in succession.
