3D Is Back. This Time, You Can Ditch the Glasses

If there's one thing that turns people off from adopting new tech, it's being forced to look silly and feel uncomfortable for extended lengths of time. It was always the Achilles' heel for 3D in the past, and it remains the primary hurdle for VR headsets and goofy-looking smart glasses. But there's a new wave of 3D coming. Laptops, tablets, and even computer monitors have started embracing a new form of 3D technology that solves this problem entirely, without giving up just how compelling 3D can look. I've used the latest iteration of the technology and spoke with the creators—this might finally be the version of 3D that sticks. The Final Frontier I was skeptical when I first saw this next generation of 3D technology. Interest in 3D comes in waves. It led Avatar to become the highest-grossing film of all time. Five years later, it became the butt of a joke. But this new wave of 3D products isn't just a rehash of past failed attempts. There's a new technology bringing this trend to life, and it's what makes this new era of 3D so compelling. The creators of this technology have been watching the momentum build. 'Today, we're at hopefully the inflection point,' says David Fattal, cofounder and chief technology officer of Leia Inc. Founded as a spinoff of HP Labs over a decade ago, the company has been responsible for nearly all of the 3D implementations in gadgets over the last several years. That includes its first project, the failed Red Hydrogen One smartphone in 2018, as well as its own hardware projects like the Lume Pad 2 Android tablet in 2023. [optimized 3D viewing screenshot] When I first saw the Acer SpatialLabs gaming monitors a few years ago (powered by Leia's tech), I knew the glasses-free experience had a certain magic to it. Despite my initial doubts, I was impressed by the strength of the 3D effect and the large 'sweet spot.' Here I am today, with a full-fledged 3D monitor on my desk, the Samsung Odyssey 3D: It finally feels like 3D screens are coming to fruition.

Ryan admits to feeling unsatisfied with her food until she adds some Hellmann's Mayonnaise. This year's hottest Super Bowl ticket? Advertising space, Fox says.

The high demand seems to have pushed prices to a record, with a few ad spots reportedly selling for a record $8 million and even $8 million-plus for 30 seconds. Fox declined to comment on the specific price tag for 30 seconds, which can vary depending on placement and other factors. But in an earnings call in November, CEO Lachlan Murdoch said ad space had sold out at 'record pricing.' Last year, a 30-second spot went for around a reported $7 million. The Super Bowl is a hot ticket for advertisers because the live viewing audience is so large. Last year, an estimated 123.7 million viewers tuned into the game, according to Nielsen. Advertisement Evans said the mix of ad categories for the most part includes the usual suspects: beverages, snacks, tech companies and telcos. There will be a focus on AI in more commercials, he said, and slightly more pharmaceutical companies advertising this year. One category that's down is movie promos and streamers. Another traditionally big category for the Super Bowl, automakers, are mainly sitting it out after a tough year in the sector, with only Stellantis' Jeep and Ram brands having announced an appearance. The California wildfires in January made the lead up to the game less predictable than usual. State Farm pulled out of its planned advertising to focus on the fires. And some other advertisers faced production delays. But Evans said accommodations were made wherever possible. Advertisement 'These are unique circumstances. ... So we're being as accommodating as possible to try to make sure that everybody can get done what they need to get done,' he said. 'But more importantly, you know, don't put themselves or anybody else in harm's way because of it.' Advertisers are expected to begin releasing their ads in the days ahead of the game. One of the first ads to debut was an ad for Budweiser, featuring a Clydesdale foal that helps make a beer delivery. Another Anheuser-Busch brand, Michelob Ultra, also released its ad, which shows Willem Dafoe and Catherine O'Hara as pickleball hustlers. Hellmann's ad brings Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal back together for a reprise of the Katz's Deli scene in "When Harry Met Sally." Teasers have abounded this year, from an Uber Eats teaser starring Charli XCX and Martha Stewart to Chris Hemsworth and Chris Pratt touting Meta's Smart Glasses.
