With Xring O1, Xiaomi seeks chip independence and here is what it means for Qualcomm and Apple
'Our collaboration with Xiaomi has always been about more than technology - it's about collaboration, vision, and a shared belief in what's possible. Lei Jun [CEO of Xiaomi] and I have worked closely over the years to bring innovation to millions of users around the world. With this new agreement, Snapdragon will continue powering Xiaomi's flagship devices as well as new products as it expands into categories like automotive and AR/VR. The next chapter starts now,' Qualcomm's president and chief executive officer, Christiano Amon, wrote on LinkedIn on May 20, are three big takeaways from this piece: 1) China's Xiaomi has signed an agreement with Qualcomm [an American company] to use its flagship - Snapdragon 8-series - chips inside its premium smartphones for many more (but unspecified) years, 2) the Xiaomi 16 series, coming later this year, will be powered by the Snapdragon Elite 2 which is pegged to launch in September, and 3) Xiaomi is probably working on Android XR-based hardware like you read between the lines, you'll find another big takeaway in hiding. If you know, you know. If you don't, that is okay, too. But if you're genuinely interested, spoiler alert: Xiaomi would launch a new phone and tablet exactly two days after signing this 'multi-year' agreement with Qualcomm. Both these devices - the Xiaomi 15S Pro and Xiaomi Pad 7 Ultra - are powered by the Xiaomi Xring O1, its first independently developed flagship-grade System-on-Chip (SoC).To call it fully custom is a bit misleading as Xiaomi is relying on UK-based ARM's blueprints and TSMC [which is based out of Taiwan] manufacturing to make the Xring O1. But building a chip – however you can – takes a great amount of investment and engineering might which is why only a select few – Apple, Google, and Samsung – are doing it. To be clear, even they are not making 100 percent custom chips [only Qualcomm has been able to crack this code with its Oryon core architecture]. Xiaomi is a much smaller company in comparison and for it to be able to pull off something like this, is a phenomenal achievement. You can say that Xiaomi made history on May 22, is not the first time that Xiaomi has made its own chip. But its first attempt – Surge S1 – which dates to 2017, was a relatively more restrained, mid-tier affair in terms of both technology and scale. With Xring O1, it is taking a swing at Qualcomm and MediaTek's fastest mobile chips in the market today in a fully no-holds-barred fashion. The stats are claims that the Xring O1 achieved over 3 million points in the AnTuTu benchmark, outperforming the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite. In Geekbench 6, it reportedly scored over 3,000 in single-core and 9,000 in multi-core tests, with the multi-core score edging past Apple's A18 Pro (which is inside the iPhone 16 Pro). You should take these 'controlled' lab scores with a pinch of salt, but that is hardly the point. The real headline is, Xiaomi is going all-out to challenge Qualcomm and Apple at the highest level, and saying, 'Hello world, look, we can do what Apple, Google, and Samsung can, too.'But it is not so much about beating Qualcomm and MediaTek, or even Apple, Google and Samsung, any more. The need of the hour is self-reliance and while no country is immune to the changing geopolitical and macroeconomic environment, Chinese companies are perhaps the most volatile after the recent Trump tariffs diktat. But Chinese companies have also shown great is a classic example. With no access to US-tech – due to strict sanctions – from Qualcomm chips to Google and Windows software, it built its own ecosystem from the ground up in no time. DeepSeek was able to make Nvidia dance – however briefly – by releasing generative AI models with a significantly smaller number of resources than Xring O1 rollout is another sign of how Chinese companies are coming together to not just brave but take Big Tech head on. Xiaomi has earmarked a USD $7 billion investment, which is roughly Rs 60,000 crore, to build and improve its in-house chip efforts. With AI being the next frontier, these chips would help drive the next phase of growth for the company. It has already announced its own LLM called MiMo, so there is plenty of action happening across the board, not in one or two key Xring O1 isn't just a chip. It is a statement. While it continues to partner with Qualcomm, its first real swing at custom silicon signals a bold pivot toward independence in an increasingly uncertain tech world. With ambitions across AI, hardware, and XR, Xiaomi is no longer content playing catch-up. It is building the future on its own terms and making sure the world takes notice.

Qualcomm, Xiaomi ink multi-year pact to integrate on-device AI in edge devices
NEW DELHI: Qualcomm Technologies and Xiaomi have expanded their partnership with a new multi-year agreement to integrate on-device artificial intelligence (AI) in the latter's smartphones, automotives, AR/VR glasses, wearables, tablets, and other edge devices . Later this year, the Chinese brand will be one of the first to adopt the next-generation premium Snapdragon 8-series . On-device AI refers to running AI models locally on the device, rather than relying on cloud or internet-driven processing. On-device processing is seen as crucial for enhanced privacy and quicker results with minimal latency for applications such as facial recognition, personalised recommendations, genAI, and more. 'We look forward to continuing the next 15 years of our collaboration and leveraging Qualcomm's cutting-edge Snapdragon platforms and technologies to deliver even more innovative and high-quality products to our customers worldwide,' said Lei Jun, CEO of Xiaomi, in a joint statement Wednesday. 'We value the relationship we have built resulting from 15 years of close collaboration and are excited to continue this journey for many years to come, with Snapdragon platforms powering Xiaomi's premium smartphones,' Cristiano Amon, president and CEO of Qualcomm Incorporated, said in the statement. 'We look forward to expanding our work together in automotive, smart home products, wearables, AR/VR glasses, tablets, and more,' Amon added. Xiaomi's various products, including the Mi 15 series, the SU7 electric vehicle (EV), the Xiaomi Buds 5 Pro, the Xiaomi Watch 2 Pro, and others, are powered by Qualcomm chipsets and modems.
