Life convict on parole dies

A life convict, who had been enlarged on parole, died on Thursday. Police said former village assistant Sankaranarayanan, 68, of Mangalakudiyiruppu under Thatchanallur police station, was awarded life imprisonment in a honour killing case. As he suspected that a woman had helped his son for marrying a railway worker despite his opposition, Sankaranarayanan murdered the pregnant lady. After a court here awarded him death sentence, it was commuted to life imprisonment by the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court. Sankaranarayanan, who was out on parole, had to return to Palayamkottai Central Prison on July 20. But, he was found near the railway track close to Balaji Avenue in Thatchanallur on July 19 evening with serious injuries and admitted to the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital for treatment, where he died on Thursday. Police suspect that Sankaranarayanan might have ended life by jumping in front of moving train. Exclusive: Sneha Bhawsar on Ishani's new time and playing an antagonist; says ‘People love to hate Ankita and that's the biggest compliment I can get'

Ishani, the spin-off of the popular show Jhanak, premiered on July 3 and has already carved its own space on television. Actress Sneha Bhawsar, who plays the manipulative and complex Ankita, is thrilled with how far the show—and her character—have come. Speaking to Times of India TV, she shared her excitement, fan reactions, and what it means to play such a layered role in a prime-time slot. Reflecting on the show's evolving journey, Sneha said, 'Who would've thought… from being part of a show, to a spin-off airing at 11 PM (yes, the 'sab so rahe hote hai' slot), to now becoming our very own show at 7:30 PM with a fresh storyline and identity — it's been a rollercoaster! The love you've shown for Ishani has been unreal, and honestly, that's what kept us going. This journey is just getting started… Stay with us, kyunki abhi toh bas shuruaat hui hai — picture abhi baaki hai!' On audience feedback, Sneha gleefully shared, 'Oh, people love to hate Ankita—and honestly, that's the biggest compliment I can get as an actor! The hate is pouring in—and I'm loving every bit of it! People are genuinely furious at Ankita, and that tells me I'm doing my job just right. That fine line between annoyance and fascination? That's where Ankita lives… rent-free in people's heads.' Looking ahead, fans can expect drama at its best. 'Ankita and Yash's wedding is coming up—it's going to be beautiful, dramatic, and full of unexpected moments,' Sneha teased. Speaking about the prime-time shift, she added, 'Playing Ankita in a prime-time slot is a dream. Most people expect female characters to be likable or redeemable—but Ankita isn't either, and I love that. This slot ensures more people witness her manipulations unfold in real time. That challenge? I live for it.' With intensity, mystery, and emotional depth, Ishani and Sneha's Ankita are clearly here to stay—and stir things up.

Sharda University Student Suicide: Victim's Father Alleges Mental Pressure By Faculty Members

A second-year BDS student at Sharda University in Greater Noida died by suicide, alleging harassment and humiliation by faculty members. The father of a second-year BDS student at Sharda University in Greater Noida, who died by suicide on Monday, said she was under intense psychological stress due to the way certain faculty members treated her. The body of the student was found in the hostel room of the university, which comes under the jurisdiction of the Knowledge Park Police Station. The deceased student accused her teachers of harassment and humiliation in a suicide note. Following the incident, tensions escalated on campus as students staged protests, demanding accountability from the college authorities. A heated exchange also broke out between police personnel and protesting students. Seven people, including six university staff, have been booked in the case, and two faculty members named in the suicide note have been arrested. What Did The FIR Say? The student had complained to her father about being repeatedly humiliated in class by faculty members and threatened with academic consequences, according to the FIR seen by the Hindustan Times. The family told police that the student's father visited the university on July 14 after her daughter's complaint, and personally met the Dean, HOD and other faculty members, who assured him that she would not be harassed further. 'My daughter was under immense mental pressure because of how she was treated by certain faculty members. Despite my meeting with the university officials just days before, no action was taken. They gave verbal assurances but continued to harass her," the victim's father said. The student was reportedly told that her work would not be approved and she would be barred from exams. The next day, she took the extreme step. Her father said she was 'tortured" and evidence regarding her death was also 'destroyed". The university has not issued any official statement in connection with the case yet. The incident comes days after a college student in Odisha's Balasore district died after setting herself on fire, allegedly over harassment by a teacher.
