Indian sprinters win Silver at Asian Championships, secure spot at 2025 World Athletics Championship
Gumi [South Korea], May 31 (ANI): India's women's 4x100m relay team delivered a strong performance at the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships in Gumi, South Korea, clinching a silver medal with a timing of 43.86 seconds. The team--comprising Srabani Nanda, Abhinaya Rajarajan, SS Sneha, and Nithya Gandhe--finished second behind China, who took gold with 43.28 seconds. Thailand secured bronze in 44.26 seconds, as per a press release from the Athletics Federation of India (AFI). The result not only brought India a podium finish at the continental level but also secured the relay team's qualification for the World Athletics Championships to be held in Tokyo next year. Among the four sprinters, Sneha's selection and performance hold particular significance for HRDS INDIA SPORTS ACADEMY, which she represents. Her contribution to the medal-winning relay marks the first-ever international medal for the academy, which focuses on identifying and training talent from tribal and underprivileged communities across India. 'This silver medal is not just an individual milestone--it represents the success of a system that believes in talent, discipline, and opportunity,' said the founder secretary of HRDS INDIA. 'We are proud of Sneha and the entire Indian relay team. Their performance in Gumi shows that Indian athletics is moving in the right direction.' The academy has been actively working to build a robust grassroots system to support athletes from marginalised backgrounds, with a long-term vision of contributing to India's Olympic prospects for 2036. Sneha's qualification for the World Championships is seen as validation of that approach. As the athletes prepare for the global stage in Tokyo, the success in Gumi is expected to inspire a new generation of young Indian sprinters. For HRDS INDIA, the medal also reinforces its broader mission: to equip athletes with the training, support, and environment needed to compete at the highest levels of sport. (ANI)

Sneha's positive dope test a big wake up call for AFI, SAI
CHENNAI: In what could be another embarrassing episode for Athletics Federation of India (AFI), Sneha K tested positive for banned substance and is undergoing provisional suspension. It was on Sunday, Sneha's name started doing the rounds for returning positive. Interestingly, the 400m athlete was part of the training camp at the National Centre of Excellence (NCOE) in Thiruvananthapuram. Sneha was also part of the Asian Athletics Championships underway in Gumi, South Korea and had to be withdrawn because of this. She was tested by the World Athletics' anti-doping watchdog Athletics Integrity Unit and tested positive for stanozolol. According to the AIU website, she has been served notice of charge. Stanozolol is an anabolic androgenic steroid (AAS) and a performance enhancing drugs. It is banned at all times. This comes days after ace javelin thrower Shivpal Singh tested positive for banned substance and chief national coach of the junior India team, Ramesh Nagpuri, was penalised by National Anti-Doping Agency for reportedly 'aiding' evasion. Shivpal was training at the NCOE Patiala. The urine sample was collected during out-of-competition. The AFI had started an audacious plan this year of decentralising the national camps. Athletes testing positive in camps should give a wake-up call to not just the AFI but also the Sports Authority of India (SAI), who is in-charge of the NCOEs. India has already started bidding for the 2036 Olympic Games and is keen to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030. But such unsavoury instances will bring in disrepute to the country. Sneha had represented India at the World Relays on May 10 and 11. She won bronze at the Federation Athletics Championships in April where she clocked her personal best of 53.00s. She also ran at the Indian Grand Prix 2 at Thiruvananthapuram.

Setback for women's relay team due to doping, injury pull out
New Delhi: India's 4x400 women's relay team has been rocked by a doping scandal and injury withdrawal on the eve of the Asian Athletics Championships starting in Gumi, South Korea, from Tuesday. Sneha Kolleri, who was part of women's 4x400m women's and mixed relay squads, has returned positive for stanozolol in a test conducted by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU). On Monday, AIU confirmed her positive test and informed that the athlete was provisionally suspended on May 23. It has been learnt that she was tested by AIU during the World Relays Championships in Guangzhou, China two weeks back. Sneha competed in mixed relay (4x400m) in which India failed to qualify for the world championships. Before she could board the flight to Gumi, Athletics Federation of India (AFI) withdrew Sneha from the team. It has been learnt that another member of the relay squad Sandramol Sabu has also pulled out due to injury. She has not travelled with the team to South Korea. That leaves only four members -- Rupal Chaudhary, Subha Venkatesan, Jisna Mathew, and Kunja Rajitha -- for the women's relay (4x400m) and mixed relay competitions. Sneha was part of the national camp (for relay teams) at the National Centre of Excellence in Trivandrum. Her personal best of 53 seconds in 400m came this year at the National Federation Championships in Kochi last month, where she won bronze medal. She was part of both the women's and mixed relays squads at the Asian Championships. Aishwarya Mishra, who has the season's best of 51.12s, was not selected in the team as she did not compete in the Federation Cup. Rupal has the next best timing of 52.41s, followed by Vithya Ramraj (52.81s). Sneha has the fourth best timing this season while Subha Venkatesan (53.35s) is sixth in the list. The Indian relay teams are yet to qualify for the world championships. This is the third high profile case of doping this season. Earlier Hangzhou Asian Games 10,000m silver medallist Kartik Kumar and javelin thrower Shivpal Singh failed dope tests. Also, AFI junior team coach N Ramesh was suspended by NADA on charges of 'complicity.' AIU on revealed on Monday that another Indian athlete -- Varsha Tekam, who participated in the National Cross Country Championships in January, has been suspended for evading/refusing to submit sample.
