Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy's TGL golf announces Detroit expansion team Motor City Golf Club

A new team is coming to TGL — the golf league co-founded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. Detroit was awarded the league's first-ever expansion team with the Motor City Golf Club, TGL announced Tuesday. While the news was announced Tuesday, Motor City Golf Club won't begin playing in TGL until 2027. Because of that, the announcement did not feature any news about the team's roster or any branding information about the club. The owners are known, however. The team will be co-owned by Middle West Partners and members of the Hamp family, which also co-owns the Detroit Lions. Sheila Ford Hamp and her husband Steve are co-owners of the club. Denver Broncos owner Rob Walton is also part of the ownership group. TGL — which combines golf and technology — completed its first season in March. Six teams made up of PGA pros competed over the course of two months in three-on-three and singles events. The Atlanta Drive — which features Justin Thomas, Patrick Cantlay, Billy Horschel and Lucas Glover — won the league's first SoFi Cup. Six cities were represented during the first season of the league — Atlanta, Boston, Jupiter, Los Angeles, New York and The Bay. Jupiter — which features Tiger Woods — represents Florida. The Bay represents the San Francisco Bay Area. Tuesday's news also confirms there will be multiple seasons of the league. While that was assumed after the conclusion of the TGL's first season, nothing was set in stone. The expansion to Detroit suggests TGL expects to play seasons in both 2026 and 2027. The league did not announce additional details about its second season.

Photo courtesy of TGL presented by SoFi May 20 (UPI) -- Motor City Golf Club will make its debut as TGL's seventh team in 2027, the tech-infused golf league founded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy announced Tuesday. The team, which will represent Detroit, has an ownership group led by Middle West Partners. The group's principals include Michael Hamp, Peter Hamp and Kevin Kelleher. "This is a great moment for Detroit sports and a proud moment for me personally," Michael Hamp said. "My grandfather, William Clay Ford Sr., was an avid golfer, and I believe bringing a new format of the game he loved would make him really proud. "I'm incredibly grateful for our partners at MCGC. It's an honor to build this team together. Detroit's fans are the most loyal in sports, and we're excited to represent our city in TGL and build a team that Detroit fans will be proud to support." Shelia Hamp, the principal owner of the Detroit Lions, and her husband, Steve, and Rob Walton, owner of the Denver Broncos, and Jordan Rose, founder of Rose Law Group, are among the co-owners of the Motor City Golf Club. "We are excited to be a part of innovating the great game of golf," Walton and Rose said in a joint statement. "TGL finds a terrific balance between honoring the tradition of the sport while adding elements that will grow its appeal and fan base. We look forward to being a part of Motor City Golf Club." Atlanta Drive GC won TGL's inaugural season title, capturing the SoFi Cup in March. The 2026 campaign will start in January. Boston Common Golf, Jupiter Links Golf Club, Los Angeles Golf Club, New York Golf Club, and the Bay Golf Club are the other six teams in the league.

Group of investors ready to bid $77 million for Dallas TGL franchise, per report

Group of investors ready to bid $77 million for Dallas TGL franchise, per report Could TGL expansion be coming? A recent report says there's an eight-figure offer to make it happen sooner rather than later. As reported last week, TGL is already in talks with ESPN working on a schedule for 2026. And on Tuesday, the Associated Press reported a group is planning to bid for a franchise in Dallas, putting the total investment at $77 million. TGL started in 2025 with six teams: Atlanta, New York, Los Angeles, Boston, The Bay and Jupiter Links. Each team had four players, with three participating each week. Expansion has been a discussion point with the initial success of the league, and now we know there are bids out there to bring more teams in soon. In an interview with TGL CEO Mike McCorley, he told the Palm Beach Post there is no "timeline" on expansion, but he did not rule out a few additions for the 2026 season. Although each team doesn't have players from only areas where they're from, a Dallas team could be comprised of some of the PGA Tour's best. Tom Kim, who played for Jupiter Links and was one of the first season's stars, lives in North Texas. Others with Dallas connections include world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth, Will Zalatoris, Si Woo Kim and others. More: Rory McIlroy talks TGL Season 1: What worked, player buy-in and what he wants changed for 2026 Justin Thomas' Atlanta Drive beat New York 2-0 in the best-of-three championship series last week, taking home the inaugural SoFi Cup. What does Rory McIlroy think TGL can build upon in 2026? Last week at the Texas Children's Houston Open, Golfweek caught up with TGL co-founder Rory McIlroy to speak about what changes TGL was working on going into season 2. "I think we could do better job with being a little more imaginative with the golf holes, like design golf holes that you would never be able to play in real life," McIlroy said. "I think that would be pretty cool, right? I think that something that we could do a better job of. I would say the putting surface needs looked that, like I think it's much harder to hole putts on that TGL green than it is the hole putts on on a normal green. We could have a look at changing the putting surface maybe,as well. "Apart from that, ESPN is happy. Sponsors are happy. The players are really bought into it, so as a first season has went, I think it's went really, really well."
