U2 Returns As Bono Earns His First Solo Smash

U2 frontman Bono is enjoying a big week on the music charts in the United Kingdom, and this time, he's flying solo. The singer-songwriter earns his first win as a soloist with a reimagined version of one of his band's classics. The new take on 'Desire' is tied to his brand new documentary Bono: Stories of Surrender, and it's given him a debut smash on his own, decades into his tenure as a global superstar. As Bono succeeds, so too does U2. The band returns to the Official Physical Singles chart this week, which seems to suggest that interest in his solo work is benefiting the group that launched him to superstardom. U2 reappears on the U.K.'s list of top-selling tunes available on physical formats — such as CDs and vinyl — with 'Atomic City.' The track reenters the tally at No. 65 this week. 'Atomic City' already stands as U2's most recent debut on the Official Physical Singles chart, as it first appeared in December 2023. It quickly surged to No. 5 the following frame, which remains its all-time peak on the roster. The song has been absent from the physical ranking for almost a year. It last appeared in August 2024, when it returned at No. 86 for a single frame before disappearing again. Now, U2 joins Bono on the Official Physical Singles chart, though the band lands several dozen spaces below the rocker. Bono's cover of the group's 'Desire' debuts at No. 1. The same track, originally made famous by U2 decades ago, not only earns the singer his first solo chart-topper on this roster, but it also becomes his inaugural leader on the Official Vinyl Singles ranking. Purchases on that format appear to have propelled it to the summit of both tallies. While 'Desire' doesn't lead the Official Singles Sales chart — which includes all forms of purchases — it still manages a strong start, as it launches at No. 7.

BTS Star Jin Hits No. 1 For The First Time

BTS's Jin scores his first No. 1 on the U.K.'s Official Physical Singles chart with 'Don't Say You ... More Love Me,' from his new EP Echo. NEW YORK, NEW YORK - MAY 20: BTS' Jin lights the Empire State Building in celebration of his second solo album, Echo, on May 20, 2025 in New York City. (Photo byfor Empire State Realty Trust) BTS star Jin returns to the charts in the United Kingdom this week with his second solo era. The singer recently released his sophomore EP Echo, and the project earns him his first hit on the main albums ranking in the country. The set's lead single, "Don't Say You Love Me," has also proved to be a strong seller, bringing the South Korean superstar to a peak he's never seen before. "Don't Say You Love Me" debuts at No. 1 on the Official Physical Singles chart. The cut earns Jin his first leader on the list of the bestselling tunes available on any format that fans can buy and physically hold. The smash is just his second solo placement on the tally, following "Running Wild," which arrived last November. That track spent just one frame at No. 6 before disappearing. Jin's track also manages to conquer both the Official Singles Sales and Official Singles Downloads charts as it arrives. However, it does not mark a new high point for him on those tallies. The musician, who is one of the seven members of BTS, has previously led the charge on both rankings with "I'll Be There" and "Running Wild," which dominated in November 2024. He missed out on his first leader in November 2022 when "The Astronaut" stalled at No. 2. He's also reached the top 10 with his solo cut "Super Tuna." "Don't Say You Love Me" brings Jin back to the main songs ranking in the U.K. as well. The single opens at No. 58, becoming his fifth solo placement, and landing right in the middle of all his releases in terms of peak position. Echo is also a big win for Jin. The EP launches on four rankings across the Atlantic, becoming a top 10 hit on half of them and a strong seller on every list on which it appears.

‘I pulled it off': J-Hope makes Billboard cover history as first male K-pop solo star, celebrates world tour milestone

SEOUL, May 21 — BTS member J-Hope has become the first male K-pop solo artist to appear on the cover of Billboard magazine, featured in its May issue. The publication described J-Hope as a standout figure in the group, highlighting his "magnetic stage presence and captivating dance moves" that contributed to BTS' global success. 'Just as I drew inspiration from the artists I admired growing up, shaping my own music through their influence, I'd be honored if my work could inspire others and pass on that same positive energy — that would mean the world to me,' J-Hope said in the cover story. In April, he reportedly became the first South Korean male solo artist to hold a stadium concert in the United States, which formed part of his debut solo world tour. 'This time, I was on my own, and honestly, I wondered if I could handle that immense energy and pressure by myself. But I pulled it off and that means a lot to me — it's a milestone I'll always cherish,' he said. J-Hope's latest single Mona Lisa debuted at No. 65 on the Billboard Hot 100 in March, and he is scheduled to perform in Taipei this weekend as his tour continues.
