Spain announce replacement for outgoing manager following Euros performance
Spain have announced that manager Montse Tome will not be continuing in charge of La Roja, after almost two years in charge. Tome was the first women to take charge of the national team. Tome took over the Spain job from predecessor Jorge Vilda, who she was assistant manager to for six years, sharing her duties with the Spain under-17 side. After Vilda was dismissed following the 2023 World Cup victory. Last year, Tome guided La Roja to the 2024 Nations League title, but could not get them over the line against England in the Euros this summer, with La Roja losing out on penalties. Out of contract at the end of the month, the RFEF announced they would not be renewing her deal. Sonia Bermudez to take over from Tome Another former Barcelona player, Sonia Bermudez, who also turned out for Spain, Rayo Vallecano, Levante, Atletico Madrid and Wester New York Flash during her career. As a coach, she began in the youth ranks at Real Madrid, before taking over the Spain under-19 job, followed by the under-20 position and then the under-23s. She will be assisted by Basque coach Iraia Iturregi, who won four league titles with Athletic in 15 seasons as a player. She has also coached at Athletic through the ranks, and spent time as an assistant to the title-winning CD Baskonia in the men's Tercera in 2024-25, another affiliate of Athletic. How will Tome's tenure be viewed? Image via EFE Despite never placing worse than in a final over her two years, Tome has been a lightning rod for criticism since taking over. Under early suspicion for her links to the previous regime with Vilda, and applauding Luis Rubiales infamous speech to the RFEF, Spain struggled to find fluidity for large parts of the biggest games. At Euro 2025, La Roja were widely believed to have the best squad, but unconvincing changes and a loss of control a goal up in the final saw the finger of blame pointed at Tome. Tome commented that she was 'proud' and 'grateful' to the team, her bosses and the staff. She also noted that she leaves the job 'happy and in peace'.

Barcelona vs Villarreal La Liga match in Miami moves closer after RFEF approval
Spanish football could finally cross the Atlantic after the Royal Spanish Football Federation approved a request for Barcelona and Villarreal to play their December La Liga 2025-26 match in Miami – a move nearly a decade in the making. The RFEF board gave the green light on Monday for the teams' matchday 17 game to be played at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on December 20 in the first step towards the competition playing an official match abroad for the first time in its history. The proposal now heads to European football's governing body UEFA before requiring final approval from FIFA – the last hurdle in La Liga President Javier Tebas' American dream. 'At its meeting on 11 August 2025, the RFEF Board of Directors received a request from Villarreal CF and FC Barcelona to play its match on matchday 17 of the first division in the United States,' RFEF said in a statement. '... the Royal Spanish Football Federation will submit the request to UEFA to begin the process for subsequent authorisation by FIFA for the match to be played at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on 20 December 2025 ...' La Liga has been pursuing its transatlantic vision for almost a decade, emulating the strategy employed by the NFL and NBA to establish themselves in other markets. ALSO READ | Spain names former player Sonia Bermudez as head coach of women's national team Tebas' first attempt came in the 2018-19 season with a proposed Girona-Barca match in the U.S. that never materialised. A planned Villarreal-Atletico Madrid fixture for 2019-20 also fell through, with the matter ending up in the courts after the RFEF refused authorisation. The courts sided with the Spanish Federation, then under Luis Rubiales, who was sacked in 2023 for kissing women's team player Jenni Hermoso on the mouth celebrating Spain's World Cup victory in Sydney. There was another near-miss last season, with a Barcelona-Atletico match almost proceeding before La Liga pulled back at the last minute to better structure the project. Now, with regulatory barriers cleared and internal conflicts resolved, the Villarreal-Barca clash appears poised to finally deliver Spanish football's long-awaited American adventure.
