AGTF arrests criminal linked to Sonu Chambal

Jaipur: Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) Saturday arrested Shyampal Thakur, a wanted criminal with a Rs 15,000 reward on his head, from the ravines of Dholpur. Thakur, linked to the Sonu Chambal gang, was on the run since a recent exchange of fire with police in Rajakhera area. Thakur is accused of overseeing arrangements for gang members who used illegal firing ranges in the Chambal ravines to train with weapons. He is also suspected of being involved in trafficking arms, sheltering fugitives, and relaying police activity updates to the gang. Officials said he played a critical role in managing food, shelter, and transport for visiting criminals from Rajasthan and neighbouring states. The arrest took place late Friday night after police received information that Thakur was planning to escape to Uttar Pradesh by bus. Acting on the tip-off, the AGTF, along with Dholpur police, caught him at Khanpura Mod. After nearly a month of surveillance, the AGTF team managed to track down Thakur. Back on May 8, a police raid in Rajakhera targeting the Sonu Chambal gang resulted in the arrest of dacoit Madhav Singh along with a cache of firearms. During that raid, Shyampal Thakur, Sonu Chambal, and Thansingh Thakur opened fire at police and managed to flee, ASP Siddhant Sharma said. Police believe Thakur handled arms trafficking links between Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

Addl DG (AGTF) Dinesh MN said those arrested are Jeetendra alias Jeetu Chambal and his associate Tejpal Thakur from the Rajakheda area in Dholpur. Jeetu is the younger brother of Sonu Chambal, who had nearly 35 serious cases registered against him, including murder, kidnapping for ransom, and attacks on police in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. Police said Sonu built an illegal firing range in the ravines where criminals from other states were trained and given shelter. Following his recent arrest by Haryana Police, Jeetu took over leadership of the gang.
