Akshay Kumar provides insurance to over 650 stunt workers after SM Raju's death

The death of stuntman SM Raju on the sets of Pa Ranjith's Vettuvam has shocked the industry. The 52-year-old stuntman died while driving an SUV in a high-octane stunt scene for the film in Nagapattinam on July 13. It has sparked debate around the safety of stuntmen on set. Amid the controversy, actor Akshay Kumar has stepped forward to provide insurance to about 650 stuntmen and stuntwomen in the country. On July 17, reports of the actor providing health and accident coverage for stuntmen surfaced online. The news was confirmed after a veteran stunt professional thanked the Sooryavanshi star for his generosity. Stuntman Vikram Singh Dahiya, who has worked in films like Gunjan Saxena, Antim, OMG 2, and Jigra, told Hindustan Times, 'Thanks to Akshay sir, around 650 to 700 stuntmen and action crew members in Bollywood are now covered under insurance. The policy includes cashless medical treatment up to Rs 5 to Rs 5.5 lakh, whether the injury occurs on or off set.' While his kind gesture is being appreciated, many are questioning the ethics of Hindi film industry. A user shared the Akshay Kumar news on Reddit, prompting many responses. A user wrote, 'While a great gesture from Akshay, why the heck is an illustrious industry as Bollywood not already providing them insurance is the bigger question! ' Other comment read, 'Wonderful gesture. Every person working on the film set should be insured – not just stunt crew.' ALSO READ | Baahubali stunt coordinator Lee Whittaker opens up on death of stuntman on Pa Ranjith's film set: 'If there's not enough funds with production…' Earlier, speaking to SCREEN, American action choreographer Lee Wittaker expressed his disappointment in the lack of safety on film sets. He stated, 'No one should die doing a stunt. Safety precautions have to meet high standards for the safety of the performer and the crew. If there isn't then the stunt should never happen. If there's not enough funds with production, the stunt should never happen.' Whittaker has also worked in several Indian projects like Vishwaroopam, Linga, Kaadu, Baahubali and Thugs of Hindostan, among others. Soon after SM Raj's death, Pa Ranjith took to his X handle and said, 'A day that started out with detailed planning, caution, clarity in execution, prayers and all our goodwill, as it does on every film set that stages crash sequences, ended up in his unexpected death. This has sent us all into shock and heartbreak.' He claimed to have followed every protocol on set to maintain safety. He shared, 'We relied on the expertise of our stunt director Dilip Subbarayan and followed every protocol, every detail that was needed to make this safe. That in spite of all of our preparations and precautions, we ended up losing a man who had unparalleled experience and achievements, who made his family, colleagues and directors proud with the quality of his work that has affected us deeply. He will have our respect, love and adoration always.' In another development, the filmmaker has been booked for SM Raj's death. Along with Pa Ranjith, Neelam Productions executive Rajkamal, stunt artiste Vinoth, and the owner of the car Prabhakar have also been booked for the incident. They are booked under three sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Section 106(1), Section 289, and Section 125. Just last year, around the same time, another stuntman named Eluumalai died on the sets of Karthi and director PS Mithran's Sardar 2. The incident took place on July 16, 2024. According to India Today, the stuntman fell from a rostrum of 20 feet high while shooting an action sequence for the film. However, it went unnoticed with not much changing over the year.

Housefull 5 box office collection worldwide: Akshay Kumar's film joins Rs 200 crore club in India, crosses Rs 300 crore globally

Housefull 5 box office collection worldwide: Akshay Kumar's comedy caper, the fifth instalment of his much-loved comedy franchise, has entered the Rs 200 crore club at India box office and crossed Rs 300 crore worldwide, at per the makers. Produced by Sajid Nadiadwala under the banner of Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment, the film was directed by Tarun Mansukhani and released on July 6. It opened to mixed reviews but that has not dented its box office collection. The movie has become Akshay Kumar's highest grossing film after Covid-19 pandemic. It has surpassed the lifetime collection of Sooryavanshi, which had a worldwide gross collection of Rs 294.91 crore. Housefull 5 has also beat his 2025 releases, including, Kesari Chapter 2 (Rs 145.73 crore) and Sky Force (Rs 174.21 crore). Other Akshay Kumar films that are already in the Rs 200 crore club are Mission Mangal (Rs 202.98 crore), and Good Newwz (Rs 205.14 crore). According to the makers, the week-wise box office collection of Housefull 5 was Rs 133.58 crore in its first week, Rs 43.51 crore in week two, Rs 16.30 crore in week three, and Rs 6.85 crore in the fourth week, till Monday. A post shared by Nadiadwala Grandson (@nadiadwalagrandson) ALSO READ | Abhishek Bachchan wants to get back into commercial space now: 'Last out-and-out entertainer I did before Housefull 5 was 10 years ago' Housefull 5 has entered the list of the biggest entertainers of 2025, but still lagging behind Vicky Kaushal's Chhaava with a worldwide gross collection of Rs 807.6 crore. The movie's collection has been dipping slowly day by day, as it is facing tough competition from other new releases, including, Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par, Kajol's Maa, and Brad Pitt starrer F1. An excerpt of SCREEN's Housefull 5 review read, 'All I know that the bird has a bigger speaking part than some of the ladies, but what can you do, there are so many characters, the writers must have had a hard time handing out an equal number of lines to each. But then they must have thought, oh, they're all birds, so that's okay. I have to say that compared to the previous Housefulls, this one has a slightly fuller house, but because no one expects anything else, it's pretty much like the older ones– characters tumbling over each other, crass jokes about body parts and fluids (how can they not be there) abound, and yes, there's that classic climactic human chain, where the entire cast is yelling and screaming and shouting and…' Besides Akshay Kumar, Housefull 5's ensemble star cast also includes Abhishek Bachchan, Riteish Deshmukh, Nana Patekar, Jacqueline Fernandes, Chunky Panday, Sanjay Dutt, Jackie Shroff, Ranjeet, Fardeen Khan, Nargis Fakhri, Sonam Bajwa, Chitrangada Singh, Shreyas Talpade, Dino Morea, Johny Lever, Nikitin Dheer, and Soundarya Sharma.

Housefull 5 Has Been At The Theatres For 3 Weeks. What Is The Box Office Verdict?

New Delhi: When Housefull 5 hit theatres on June 6, it wasn't just the latest installment in a long-running comedy franchise; it was a litmus test for Akshay Kumar's box office credibility in 2025. After a turbulent 2024 and a lukewarm start to 2025, expectations were sky-high for the fifth chapter in the Housefull series. Directed by Tarun Mansukhani, the film brought back a familiar ensemble and, with it, a familiar formula: double entendres, over-the-top caricatures, chaotic subplots and slapstick humour that's become the franchise's signature. Now, three weeks since release, the numbers are in and the verdict is out. Housefull 5 may have been critically panned, but at the box office, it's been a completely different story. Week 1 Breakdown Housefull 5 opened to a strong start, releasing in over 5,000 screens worldwide in two versions (5A and 5B). Curiosity around the alternate endings, a nostalgia-powered fan base and limited box office competition gave it the push it needed. Housefull 5 became Akshay Kumar's fourth-biggest opener after Mission Mangal, Sooryavanshi and Gold. Here's the full Week 1 breakdown: Day 1 (Friday): Rs 24 crore Day 2 (Saturday): Rs 31 crore Day 3 (Sunday): Rs 32.5 crore Day 4 (Monday): Rs 13 crore Day 5 (Tuesday): Rs 11.25 crore Day 6 (Wednesday): Rs 8.5 crore Day 7 (Thursday): Rs 7 crore Week 1 Total: Rs 127.25 crore (India nett) This was the first Akshay Kumar-led film since Good Newwz to cross the Rs 100 crore mark within four days. Week 2 Breakdown Week 2 saw the expected post-weekend dip, but Housefull 5 held on reasonably well, especially considering the mixed-to-negative critical reception. Day 8 (Friday): Rs 6 crore Day 9 (Saturday): Rs 9.5 crore Day 10 (Sunday): Rs 11 crore Day 11 (Monday): Rs 3.75 crore Day 12 (Tuesday): Rs 4.25 crore Day 13 (Wednesday): Rs 3 crore Week 2 Total: Rs 37.5 crore (approx) Cumulative Total (2 weeks): Rs 164.75 crore Internationally, the film was also performing well, with the worldwide gross collection crossing Rs 212 crore by Day 9, according to official figures from the makers. Week 3 Breakdown By the time Housefull 5 entered its third week, newer releases began to eat into its screen count. Audience fatigue set in and the film began showing sharper drops. Yet, it continued adding to its tally, albeit in smaller amounts. While the exact daily figures for Week 3 are still being compiled, early estimates suggest a third-week addition of Rs 8-10 crore, pushing the film's domestic net total close to Rs 173-175 crore. The Final Verdict With a reported budget of Rs 225 crore, Housefull 5 faced a steep recovery path. However, with Rs 175 crore domestic nett, Rs 200 crore gross in India and Rs 220+ crore global gross collections, the film has firmly placed itself in commercial success territory. Trade analysts believe the sale of digital, satellite and overseas rights will bridge the remaining gap, classifying the film somewhere between a "semi-hit" and a "clean hit". So What Worked (And What Didn't)? What undeniably worked in Housefull 5 's favour was its box office pull, driven largely by Akshay Kumar's return to the comedy genre he's long been associated with and the enduring draw of the Housefull franchise. Add to that, a massive global rollout with up to 21 shows per day in major multiplexes. Another factor that helped was the curiosity-driven release of dual versions - 5A and 5B - which, despite negligible differences, created buzz. But for all the footfall, what didn't work was almost everything else. Critics and discerning viewers alike slammed the film for its crass humour, lazy writing, and its dated, objectifying portrayal of women. Soundarya Sharma's character, in particular, stood out for all the wrong reasons - introduced in a hyper-sexualised manner and reduced to a walking, talking sight gag, she became emblematic of the film's larger issues. The female cast overall had no agency, no arcs, and barely any lines. In terms of content, Housefull 5 failed to connect emotionally or intellectually, relying on tired tropes that felt more exhausting than entertaining. The Bottom Line Housefull 5 might not win any awards for writing, performances or innovation - in fact, many are still questioning how such storytelling still thrives in 2025. But its box office trajectory proves one uncomfortable truth: sexist, slapstick, regressive humour still sells in India, especially when packaged with nostalgia, stardom and scale. So, is it a hit? Yes. Commercially. Is it a win for cinema? That's still very much up for debate.

Housefull 5 Is Akshay Kumar's First Hit In A While. It Took 17 Other Actors To Do It

Sixteen flop films and almost four years. This was perhaps the distance that Bollywood star Akshay Kumar had to travel from 2021's blockbuster Sooryavanshi to reach Housefull 5, his latest release, which is on its way to becoming a hit at the box office within days of its release. Housefull 5, the newest chapter in the comedy film franchise Housefull, crossed the Rs 100 crore-mark at the domestic box office on Tuesday. Directed by Tarun Mansukhani of Dostana fame, the thriller comedy released in theatres on June 6. Countless laughs. One Housefull heart. It took 18 actors, including Akshay Kumar himself, two alternate endings of Housefull 5 (Housefull 5A, Housefull 5B) and a reported budget of Rs 300 crore for the actor to finally become lucky in 2025, almost four years after the release of Sooryavanshi. Housefull 5 also stars Riteish Deshmukh, Abhishek Bachchan, Jacqueline Fernandez, Sonam Bajwa, Nargis Fakhri, Sanjay Dutt, Jackie Shroff, Nana Patekar, Chitrangda Singh, Fardeen Khan, Chunky Panday, Johnny Lever, Shreyas Talpade, Nikitin Dheer, Dino Morea, Soundarya Sharma, and Ranjeet. Housefull 5 is also his third release this year after period dramas Kesari Chapter 2 and Sky Force, which fell just a bit short from becoming box office successes. According to reports, Sky Force was made on a budget of Rs 150 crore and earned Rs 142 crore. Kesari Chapter 2 raised between Rs 144-168 crore while it was made on a budget of Rs 120 crore. Housefull 5 is around Rs 200 crore away from being called a bona fide hit. Bankrolled by Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment, the film was reportedly mounted on a budget of more than Rs 300 crore. It's the fifth film in the comedy franchise and it marks the 10 years of the first Housefull film too. And, so the makers left no stone unturned in their efforts to make this film a hit. Mediapersons were distributed BookMyShow codes worth Rs 500 to watch Housefull 5A along with a companion for a show on the release day (June 6) at a cinema hall of their choice. Book… — Nadiadwala Grandson (@NGEMovies) June 9, 2025 In terms of advance bookings for the release day, Housefull (both versions combined) had earned Rs 14 crore, with the figures from block (reserved) seats amounting to approximately Rs 5 crore, according to trade website Sacnilk. The movie's reported earnings come as a much-needed respite for Akshay Kumar. After the highs of his Sooryavanshi in 2021, one of the biggest hit Hindi films in the post-COVID-19 world grossing over Rs 290 crore, came Atrangi Re the same year which fell flat at the box office. The coming four years were marred by a long list of duds, including big-ticket titles across genres such as Samrat Prithviraj, Ram Setu, and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan. The only exceptions were 2023's OMG 2, in which Akshay Kumar featured in an extended guest appearance, as well as Stree 2 and Singham Again, both 2024 releases, which starred him in a cameo. These 16 movies also don't include Cutputtli, which got a direct-to-digital release on JioHotstar (then Disney+ Hotstar). The name of Akshay Kumar once bore the promise of a hit film, an idea that has come under scanner and intense media scrutiny after the actor's consecutive movies bombed at the box office in the last four years. The films being poorly reviewed by critics also didn't help. During the trailer launch of Sky Force earlier this year, Akshay Kumar candidly spoke about his career slump. "It's not that it has happened for the first time. The best part is you keep on working hard. That is what I tell myself. If anyone talks to me about it, I say the same thing that you have to keep working hard," the actor had said. Akshay also said many people have started advising him to do "one film or maximum two films" in a year. "... But I say if I can work, then why not? I have based my entire career on that. Many people have told me not to do content-based films, but I don't want to leave that. I want to keep working on different kinds of films," he had said at the time.
