Max temp up by 3°C, Met predicts dry spell till Thurs
Kolkata: The city remained dry and humid on Saturday even as the maximum temperature spiralled up over three degrees from Friday's 29.2 °C to touch 32.7°C. The mercury could rise further by a degree on Sunday, which too, was expected to remain dry as well, said the Met office. With the monsoon trough having slid north and an upper air circulation, which was predicted to bring widespread rain in south Bengal earlier this week, having moved away, Kolkata and south Bengal could remain relatively dry till Aug 14. Met predicts moderate rain in Kolkata for 5-6 days
Kolkata: The city and south Bengal are set to receive "light to moderate" rain over the next five-six days. Though an upper air circulation was hovering over the region, it triggered scanty rain on Friday. With the trough moving away, rain will now be more scattered and sporadic, the Met office said. North Bengal, on the other hand, is set to receive heavy rain. Although rain and thunderstorms have been predicted in some areas of south Bengal, it could be light and moderate, said the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Alipore. "There could be localised clouds triggering rain and thunderstorms in some south Bengal areas, but it will be moderate. North Bengal may get some respite over the weekend, but showers will return from Aug 11-12. ," said RMC weather scientist Sourish Bandopadhyay. An RMC bulletin on Friday said: "The monsoon trough at mean sea level now passes through Ferozpur, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Kheri, Patna, Bankura, Digha and thence east-southeastwards to northeast Bay of Bengal. An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over Bangladesh and Bengal coasts, and adjoining areas of northwest Bay of Bengal." Humid city gets sharp evening shower, rain may remain scanty
Kolkata: The city experienced another humid day with scattered morning rain and a sharp spell of evening shower, even as the maximum temperature reached 31.6°C, a degree less than Saturday's maximum. With the monsoon trough having slipped up north, rain will remain scanty and sporadic over the next few days, said the Met office. North Bengal, however, could receive heavy rain over the next 48 hours. Kolkata recorded 9.6 mm of rain following a month of heavy rain in July, which turned out to be the wettest in 10 years. Even though the city remained largely dry over the last three days, intermittent showers will continue, said the Met office. "We will continue to have localised rain. The monsoon has shifted slightly northwards, which will lead to more frequent and heavier showers across north Bengal. Kolkata and south Bengal could remain relatively dry for a few days," said Regional Meteorological Centre weather scientist Sourish Bandopadhyay. A bulletin issued by the Regional Meteorological Centre on Sunday said: "The upper air cyclonic circulation over northeast Bihar and neighbourhood lay over northwest Bihar and adjoining northeast Uttar Pradesh and extended up to 4.5 km above mean sea level, tilting southwestwards with height. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like What does it take to be an air traffic controller in Singapore? Wet start to monsoon helps Kol top last June rain count
1 2 Kolkata: Two more days are still left of June but the monsoon rainfall count in Kolkata has already exceeded the figure logged in last year's June. A wet beginning to the monsoon led to 187.8 mm rainfall in the city between June 1 and 27 this year, while the figure was 143.2 mm in the entire June last year. With a cyclonic circulation and a low-pressure area set to form on June 29, the count, which remained below normal in Kolkata, could exceed the normal mark, said the Met office. Consistent overnight rain and a grey sky greeted Kolkatans on Friday morning, and as the day proceeded, a cloud cover persisted with occasional spells of drizzle in most areas. The city received 42.7 mm of rain on Friday, as a result of which the maximum temperature dropped two degrees to 29.3°C. You Can Also Check: Kolkata AQI | Weather in Kolkata | Bank Holidays in Kolkata | Public Holidays in Kolkata Heavy to very heavy rain has been predicted for Monday, as a cyclonic circulation is forecast to form over the north Bay of Bengal on June 29 that may develop into a low-pressure area by June 30 (Monday). "We expect spells of heavy rain in Kolkata and south Bengal that could take the rain count higher and closer to the normal mark. The city has a 24% deficit for June till now," said Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) weather scientist Sourish Bandopadhyay. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trading CFD dengan Teknologi dan Kecepatan Lebih Baik IC Markets Mendaftar Undo But south Bengal has already received more than its normal share of June rain. It received 243.9 mm of rain between June 1 and 27, 13% more than the normal count. "There have been successive cyclonic circulations that caused intermittent but consistent rain ever since monsoon arrived in south Bengal and Kolkata on June 17. While the rain has been heavier around Kolkata, the city has received drizzles and moderate showers. But Kolkata's deficit is not much, a deficit of up to 19% being taken as normal. The impending low-pressure may wipe out the month's deficit," said Bandopadhyay. Heavy rainfall (7 cm -11 cm) has been predicted on June 30 in Kolkata, Howrah, North and South 24 Parganas, Purulia, East and West Burdwan. In 2024, the monsoon arrived even later in Kolkata and started on a dry note. It had led to a deficit of 49% in Kolkata in June and 67% in south Bengal. Between 2014 and 2020, Kolkata received more than its normal rain count in June just once, in 2018.
