Boil water notice issued after E. Coli found in Samples Road area of Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — A boil water notice has been issued for residents in the area of Mentor Road and Samples Road by the South Blount County Utility District. On May 14, a water sample taken from Samples Road in Louisville tested positive for Coliform bacteria, whose presence can indicate contamination by disease-causing microorganisms. It was negative for E. coli. However, repeat samples taken the next day showed positive results for both Coliform and E. coli. To prepare water for drinking, bring it to a boil for one minute, then let it cool before using. Use boiled or bottled water for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and cooking until further notice. Boiling water kills bacteria and other harmful organisms. 'E. coli are bacteria whose presence indicates that the water may be contaminated with human or animal wastes. Human pathogens in these wastes can cause short-term effects, such as diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms. They may pose a greater health risk for infants, young children, the elderly, and people with severely compromised immune systems,' wrote South Blount County Utility District. Anyone who experiences symptoms is encouraged to seek medical advice, and those at an increased risk should seek advice from their healthcare providers about drinking the water.
