Lottery player checks Jurassic Park ticket — and discovers ‘T. rex sized prize'
A lottery player checked her Jurassic Park scratch-off ticket — and discovered a 'T. rex sized prize.' 'I was shaking,' the $200,000 prize winner told the South Carolina Education Lottery. The lucky player said she 'had been hoping for a big win.' But she didn't expect her ticket to be worth six figures, lottery officials wrote July 30 in a news release. The woman hit the jackpot after a stop at the Chris Corner store in Saint George, a roughly 55-mile drive northwest from the popular tourist destination of Charleston. While there, she tried her luck on the Jurassic Park game. She said she was drawn to the lucky ticket because of the price, not the dinosaur-themed movie franchise. 'I had an extra $5,' the winner told lottery officials. 'So, I said 'Give me that ticket!'' It turns out, her ticket beat 1-in-540,000 odds to score a top prize in the game. The woman — who wasn't identified publicly — kept $139,000 after taxes, lottery spokesperson Holli Armstrong told McClatchy News via email. It's not the first time an unexpected ticket has made someone richer. Two other South Carolina lottery players aren't Clemson fans, but they both won big in the school's game, McClatchy News previously reported.

'I felt like Jed Clampett when he discovered his bubblin' crude,' she said, referring to the character on The Beverly Hillbillies discovering oil on his land. This resulted in Jed's family's new wealth and their move to California. The woman also shared her plans for her earnings, adding: 'I'll have a little fun, take some trips, and retirement will come sooner rather than later.' As a result of her win, the petrol station where she got the lottery ticket received a commission of $5,000. According to the South Carolina Education Lottery, the odds of winning $500,000 in the Money Madness Extra Play game are one in 1.152 million. This isn't the first lottery player in the US who ended up winning big. 'The first three were not winners, so I put them in the trash,' she added. 'Then I was like 'Where's my fourth ticket?' I looked in the trash and I was like, 'Oh, my gosh, I threw it away.'' Luckily, Howard-Thornton was able to recover the ticket and won the game's top prize of $80,000, or $57,600 after taxes.

The Upstate woman told South Carolina Education Lottery officials she made a trip to the 357 Redi Mart in Lyman because her husband had forgotten to buy the lottery tickets she requested. "I was standing in line and these bright, shiny and glittery tickets caught my eye," she said. "I bought three of them." The first two Money Madness Extra Play tickets weren't winners, but the third earned her a $500,000 prize. "I felt like Jed Clampett when he discovered his bubblin' crude," she said. The winner said she is making plans for her newfound wealth. "I'll have a little fun, take some trips and retirement will come sooner rather than later," she said.
