[Photo News] Lee Jae-myung visits border village on Day 2 of border tranquility
President Lee Jae-myung on Friday met residents at a hamlet known as Unification Village, or Tongil Chon, near South Korea's border with North Korea as he visited Jangdan-myeon in Paju, Gyeonggi Province. The meeting was held at a community service center that is 2 kilometers east of Dorasan Station, the railway station closest to North Korea. The station has been operating since 2002. Friday marked the second day since loudspeaker propaganda broadcasts stopped between the two Koreas. Following Lee's order to suspend the daily broadcasts Wednesday at 2 p.m. — for the first time in about a year — North Korea turned off its loudspeakers on Thursday. Lee told residents he was relieved to learn that North Korea stopped the loudspeaker broadcasts after South Korea did so, as it solved noise-related problems at the border village stemming from the broadcasts. Lee's stop there followed his visit to the South Korean Army base of the 25th Infantry Division to meet about 50 officers, noncommissioned officers and soldiers combined, and a village in Yeoncheon-gun, Gyeonggi Province, which is about 20 kilometers south of the borderline.

Rabid BTS fan tries to break into Jungkook's home hours after K-pop star discharged from mandatory military service
Surprise K-pop-in. A rabid K-Pop fan tried to break into the apartment of BTS member Jeon 'Jungkook' Jung-Kook just hours after he was released from mandatory service in the South Korean military, according to a report. A Chinese woman in her thirties was picked up by Seoul police around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday as she repeatedly tried to enter the security code of Jungkook's apartment door, The Korea Times reported. 3 Jungkook, 27, was discharged from the South Korean Army on Tuesday and had a rabid fan attempting to break into his Seoul apartment on Wednesday, cops said. AP The woman told police that she traveled all the way to the South Korean capital from mainland China to celebrate the 27-year-old pop star's military release after 18 months of service, the outlet reported. Wednesday's attempted break-in is just the latest in an ongoing series of obsessive fans flirting with criminality in efforts to reach members of BTS. Overly enthusiastic fans repeatedly sent food to Jungkook's home in 2023 and during a tour stop in Las Vegas, they incessantly called his hotel room in a stunt he called 'scary,' the Korea Times reported. Jungkook and his bandmate Jimin, 29, were discharged from the South Korean Army on Tuesday as six of the seven-member, internationally popular supergroup finished up their mandatory civil service this month. 3 BTS members Jungkook and Jimin pose in their fatigues as they are discharged from their mandatory 18-month service. Getty Images Photos show the pair proudly saluting in their fatigues — but Jungkook revealed the once familiar flashbulbs now seem foreign. 'Actually, it's been so long since I've been in front of cameras, and I didn't even put on makeup, so I'm a bit embarrassed,' Jungkook told reporters, adding, 'I don't know what to say.' Jungkook and Jimin began their brief military careers in December 2023. BTSers RM, 30, and V, 29, exchanged their camo for sequins on Tuesday, and the band's lead rapper Suga, 32, will complete his mandatory civil service as a social service agent on June 21. 'J-Hope', 31, completed his military service in October 2024. 3 BTS fans were wait to greet Jungkook and Jimin as they ended their civil service and rejoined the ranks of pop stardom. Getty Images The wildly successful K-Pop group put their music career on hold in 2022 with the members complying with the Asian nation's civil service mandate for 18- to 28-year-old men. Millions of fans anticipate a reunion tour, but no such plans currently exist. Instead, J-Hope is currently on an international solo tour that brought him to Brooklyn in March, and Jimin is set to begin his international tour next month.

Chinese woman tries breaking into BTS Jungkook home after military discharge
A Chinese woman in her 30s was arrested late Wednesday night for allegedly attempting to break into the home of BTS member Jungkook, just hours after his discharge from South Korea's military. According to the Yongsan Police Precinct, the incident occurred at approximately 11:20 p.m. at Jungkook's residence in Seoul's Yongsan District. Authorities said the suspect was seen repeatedly entering random passcodes on the front door's keypad in an attempt to gain entry. Police responded to a report and arrested her at the scene. She reportedly told officers that she had traveled to South Korea specifically to see Jungkook after his return to civilian life. The timing of the intrusion coincided with Jungkook's official discharge from military service earlier that day. He had enlisted in December 2023 and completed 18 months of mandatory duty in the South Korean Army. Photos released by News1 captured Jungkook saluting during his discharge ceremony in Yeoncheon, Gyeonggi Province. The arrest has raised fresh concerns about the safety and privacy of high-profile K-pop idols. The case remains under police investigation, with authorities looking into further details surrounding the woman's actions and intent. Jungkook is one of four BTS members discharged this week, leading to widespread fan excitement. Hundreds of fans, some dressed in BTS's signature purple, gathered in front of HYBE's Seoul headquarters to celebrate the group's gradual return. Many held banners and photographs in anticipation of a possible reunion. HYBE has hinted that all seven BTS members—set to complete their service by the end of June—may reunite following their hiatus, which began in 2022 at the height of the group's global fame.

Kia begins mass production of next-gen military tactical vehicle in South Korea
Kia has officially begun mass production of its upgraded military transport vehicle , the next-generation Kia Medium Tactical Vehicle ( KMTV ), marking a significant milestone in the company's decades-long involvement in military mobility. The roll-out ceremony was held Tuesday at Kia's Autoland plant in Gwangju, about 270 kilometers south of Seoul, the automaker said. The event marks the introduction of the first new KMTV model in 48 years, following the debut of the original medium tactical vehicle in 1977. Features Developed under a contract with the South Korean Army awarded in December 2019, the new KMTV comes in two variants — a 2.5-ton model with a 280-horsepower diesel engine and a 5-ton version powered by a 330-horsepower unit. Both are equipped with 8-speed automatic transmissions. Beyond raw power, the new KMTV adds modern features such as air suspension seats, front and rear cameras, around-view monitoring, and a built-in navigation system. Kia says the vehicle also boasts improved payload capacity and enhanced protection features, aiming to appeal to both domestic and international defense customers. Deliveries to the South Korean Army are scheduled to begin this month, with plans to supply the vehicle to global markets in the near future. The announcement comes on the heels of Kia's participation in the International Defence Exhibition & Conference (IDEX) 2025 in the UAE, where it showcased its full military portfolio, including the KMTV bare chassis, the Light Tactical Vehicle (KLTV) two-seater, and the company's first passenger pickup truck, the Tasman.

S. Korean, US troops conduct deployable bridge drills
South Korean and US military engineers practiced installing a deployable bridge at a major US base in South Korea this week as part of efforts to strengthen joint capabilities in maintaining supply lines during wartime, officials said Monday. The five-day exercise began Monday at Camp Humphreys in Pyeongtaek, about 60 kilometers south of Seoul, involving some 50 personnel from the South Korean Army's 1117th Engineer Corps and the 11th Engineer Battalion of the US 2nd Infantry Division. The drills were focused on setting up the US military's Line of Communication Bridge, which allows troops and equipment to cross various terrains over distances of up to 300 meters. South Korean and US troops regularly train on installing deployable bridges, often over rivers, due to South Korea's terrain that is home to more than 3,800 streams and rivers. (Yonhap)
