Small South Otago school raises nearly $60,000 by selling butter

Westgold Butter supplied the school with 250 gram blocks which usually sell for $4 with the school able to keep $1 from each block sold. File picture. Photo: supplied A small South Otago school has raised nearly $60,000 by selling butter. The rising price of butter has seen a number of schools ditch traditional fundraisers in favour of selling the blocks instead. Kaitangata School managed to sell just under 15,000 blocks of butter throughout the community earning them a grand total of $59,000, with some blocks travelling as far as Christchurch. Brittany Morrison is both a teacher and parent at the school, as well as being the treasurer and secretary of the school community group which ran the fundraiser. She said the outcome of the fundraiser completely exceeded their expectations. "We did not expect to sell that much at all... we didn't know if we were gonna even sell 400 blocks and to sell nearly 15,000 is insane." Morrison said the school was home to only 100 students, with their usual once a term fundraiser raising around $2000. She said the school was overwhelmed by what they were going to spend the money on. "We were hoping to purchase 40 pairs of headphones for the classes and a basketball hoop. We can buy multiple of those now. It's unreal. We can't believe when the money started rolling in." Butter company Westgold has been supplying the 250 gram blocks which normally sell for $4, and schools get to keep $1 per block. Despite the bargain, Morrison said future fundraisers might not yield such big results, with Westgold having to up their prices to keep up with the quick rising butter market. "They're putting it up to $5.15 for a 250 gram block, which is a lot more than what we paid. The price went up on the first of June." However Kaitangata School managed to avoid the price hike. "Westgold actually contacted us to try and get our orders in before the first of June, but when they heard that our fundraiser was still had about 10 days to go, they were really good and they understood and they kept their word and we got it for $4." The school largely managed the successful sales through order forms, handing the forms out to 60 families at the school, who then passed it on the friends, family and local businesses. "Local cafes bought some off us. It went as far as I think to someone up in Christchurch, up to Bernie's Bakery up there." Morrison managed to sell 1625 blocks of butter herself. "I sold $6.5k worth of butter just off my order sheet... it was a lot, a lot to deliver." She said the result of fundraiser meant a huge amount to the small school. "We have a small school and so any fund-raising we do, we try and do it really well. "With the success of this butter fundraiser, we probably won't need to fund-raise for the rest of the year." Division one spot up for grabs in schools competition

St Kevin's College will meet Mount Aspiring College for a shot at being elevated to division one in the Southern Schools Rugby Championship. The Oamaru and Wānaka schools had strong wins to wrap up as the top seeds in the championship's maroon and blue pools today. They will now face each other in a playoff game in Ranfurly on Saturday, in the only game for the schools competition next weekend. St Kevin's finished as the top seed of the blue pool with a 26-14 win against Central Southland College in chilly conditions in Oamaru today. Coach Justin Fowler was rapt with his team. "Very, very happy with that," Fowler said. "Certainly was a goal of ours to have a crack at that top six at some stage. "Very proud of the boys. We've sort of won tough in the last couple of weeks, which has been good" Playing at home in wet and slippery conditions, St Kevin's controlled the second half to secure the win. "When we managed to play some good territory we looked good with the ball in hand, especially in that second half. "Our set piece was a little bit shaky, but our ruck ball was good and our counter attack was very good. "We scored probably three long range tries in that second half." It was a team performance, but first five Lachlan Neal controlled the game nicely, centre Kenton Tokai was big defensively and blindside Liasiate Hausia was good with ball and strong defensively. In the other blue pool results, Waitaki Boys' had a monster 59-10 victory against Maruawai/Menzies in Gore, and South Otago ran away 63-0 against John McGlashan College 2nds. Mount Aspiring had a big 50-10 win against Taieri College in the maroon pool. Wakatipu beat King's High School 2nds 50-12 and Otago Boys' High School 2nds got home 30-15 against Cromwell College. In division one, John McGlashan 1sts beat Dunstan 32-17 today and King's High School 1sts had a 47-19 victory against Southland Boys' 2nds on Thursday. Southland Boys' 1sts will play Otago Boys' on Wednesday. After next weekend's playoff game, the competition will be split into division one, two and three for the second round. Southland Boys' 1sts and 2nds, Otago Boys' 1sts, King's 1sts, John McGlashan 1sts and the playoff winner will make up division one. Dunstan has been relegated from division one and will compete in division two with Waitaki Boys', Wakatipu, South Otago, Otago Boys' 2nds and the playoff loser. South Otago, King's 2nds, John McGlashan 2nds, Cromwell, Maruawai/Menzies and Taieri will compete in division three.

South Otago's cool counts in keeping St Kevin's at bay

South Otago held their composure to edge St Kevin's 36-35 in a tense Southern Schools Rugby Championship game in Balclutha on Saturday. The game was in the balance for the majority of the 70 minutes. The home team led 21-7 but St Kevin's scored either side of the break to level the score. South Otago opened up an eight-point lead with just under 10 minutes remaining, and they had to hang on as the visitors pushed for the win. St Kevin's vice-captain and openside Sam Fluksa scored with about five minutes to go to create more tension. But South Otago coach Jason Gilder said his side stayed calm and closed the game out. "We were just stoked with the composure at the end," he said. "To be able to hold them out in those last five minutes and get the win was very pleasing." They kept their structure at both ends of the field and scored some nice tries. Lock Luka May got stuck into his work. He made some strong carries, cleaned out around the ruck and made some telling tackles. Openside flanker Noah Saro followed May's lead. He was never too far from the action, while midfielder Callum Leeds ran strongly and helped set up his outsides. In the other games in the Blue Pool, Central Southland recorded a 31-5 win over Māruawai-Menzies in Edendale, and Waitaki Boys' eased away to beat John McGlashan 2nds 67-5 in Dunedin. The big guns shone in division 1. King's crushed Dunstan 69-13 in Alexandra, and Otago Boys' dispatched Southland Boys' 2nds 55-6 at Littlebourne. Earlier in the week, Southland Boys' cruised to a comfortable 67-19 win over John McGlashan in Dunedin. In the Maroon Pool, Otago Boys' 2nds clobbered Taieri 57-0 in Mosgiel, Mount Aspiring beat King's 2nds 43-19 in Dunedin and Wakatipu edged Cromwell 34-28 in Queenstown.
