Chatham Cup heritage strong motivation for United

Christchurch United striker Walter Leoru takes a shot during their 4-1 win over Selwyn United on Friday. PHOTO: THOMAS BIRD The last time Christchurch United reached a Chatham Cup quarter-final, they went on to win the competition. Ryan Edwards. That was in 2023, when the team claimed their seventh title after beating Hamilton's Melville United on penalties in the final. Now, they're back in the last eight and will host Auckland United on Saturday afternoon. 'It's South Island v North Island, it's Christchurch v Auckland,' said head coach Ryan Edwards. 'We'd love to have all the local Christchurch football community come down and support us.' United's seven cup titles are a record, which they share with University-Mount Wellington. 'One thing Slava (Meyn, United president) is really big on is history really matters at football clubs,' Edwards said. 'Looking back at the different people who have come through the club, won the Chatham Cup and what they've gone on to achieve – that inspires the future.' United currently lead the Southern League after a 4-1 win over bottom-placed Selwyn United on Friday night. They sit one point ahead of second-placed Cashmere Technical, who have played an extra game. However, their hopes of winning every available trophy this season were dashed in last week's English Cup semi-final, where they lost 10-9 on penalties to Nomads after a 2-2 draw. Nomads will meet either Cashmere or Waimak United in the final in early September.

Holdem hat-trick sinks Royals in lively seven-goal thriller

The Dunedin City Royals have come up short in an entertaining seven-goal thriller. After leading 2-0 early, they fell 4-3 as Flynn Holdem delivered a hat-trick to give Nomads United victory in their men's Southern League game at Logan Park on Saturday. The scoring opened from a corner, when Max Davidson glanced his header into the far post on 16 minutes, then two minutes later Jack Julian's mazy run into the penalty box drew defenders and he squared the ball to Connor Neil to slot home from close range. Nomads pulled one back on the half hour mark when striker Holdem powered home a towering header from a corner on the left. Just as Nomads threatened to equalise, the Royals restored their two-goal buffer. Brady Jacobs' diagonal run beat the offside trap and he flicked his lob over the on-rushing keeper from the edge of the box on 34 minutes. Two minutes later Holdem again out-muscled the defence to head home from another corner. The Royals conceded the equaliser right from the restart of the second half, when Cooper Goldsmith scored within seconds. Nomads took the lead for the first time on 52 minutes, when the Royals conceded a free kick on the edge of their penalty box. The first attempt hit the wall and on the rebound keeper Jonathan Tucker pulled off a great save. But Holdem reacted quickest to the loose ball, scoring the eventual match-winning goal. Wānaka travelled to Christchurch and were toppled 4-1 by Cashmere Tech. A strong defensive showing in the first half was undone by conceding two goals in first half added time. The first goal came when a quickly taken free kick caught Wānaka's defence napping for Lyle Matthysen to tap home, before a long ball allowed Yuya Taguchi run through the middle. That pair scored again in the second half, before Wānaka's Ed Belingher rifled home a late consolation goal. Christchurch United remain top of the table after a 1-0 win over Ferrymead Bays. Cashmere Tech are one point behind, while Coastal Spirit are third after they beat Selwyn 4-2 and Nelson Suburbs thumped UC 6-1. In the women's Southern League, the Dunedin City Royals won their 10th consecutive league match with a 10-1 win over Roslyn Wakari, moving eight points clear of second place University. Toni Power opened the scoring with a brace and Amy Hislop made it 3-0 at the break. Hislop went on to score another four, making it five for the day and pushing her five goals clear atop the golden boot race, on 14 for the season. Yesterday Otago University beat Northwest United 3-0 in Christchurch and remain second on the table. — Neville Watson

Guard of honour for footballer who lost leg after being hit by car

Fans and team mates welcome Jordan Chiedozie onto the pitch for Bashley's benefit match against AFC Bournemouth. A footballer who lost a leg after being hit by a car on the M27 has been given a guard of honour by team mates at his former club. Jordan Chiedozie, who played for Southern League club Bashley FC, was left in a coma after he was struck by the vehicle as he tried to change a tyre in February. Richard Slee reports on Jordan Chiedozie's recovery and preparation for the benefit match. He'd been travelling home to Southampton after playing a match at Tavistock in Devon when the accident happened. The 30-year-old lost his right leg and suffered open fractures on his left leg, along with a cracked pelvis. Throughout his recovery his dream was to be able to walk out onto the pitch again, which, despite a metal brace, he was able to do at the benefit match on Friday. He was given a standing ovation by fans and team mates as Bashley hosted AFC Bournemouth's development side. The visitors won 6-1 but posting on X, Bashley FC said the result was unimportant. "The football came second today, it was all about showing support and love to the inspirational Jordan Chiedozie" they said. Having started his career at AFC Bournemouth, Chiedozie went on to play for clubs including Cambridge United, Margate, Poole Town and AFC Totton. Extended interview: Jordan speaks to ITV Meridian's Rachel Hepworth about the crash, his recovery, and the support he's received. The self-employed striker also worked in the building industry, but has been unable to focus on anything other than his recovery, which involves daily sessions of physiotherapy. "I try not to think too much about the future," he told ITV Meridian before the match. "I just focus on what I can do now, today. "My whole life changed in February, but I don't think my outlook on life has changed much. "I still try to make the most of every situation. " When I'm going into hospital for physio I see lots of people in far worse situations than me. It's humbling. "I think my mindset as a footballer means I'm able to focus on the physio and physical recovery because I'm used to it. " In many ways I still think I'm lucky because I'm still here." Chiedozie is still keen to compete in sport and hopes to rekindle his passion for golf. He recently received his prosthetic leg and is learning to adapt to his new life. A 44-year-old woman, from Wraysbury in Berkshire, was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving and was later bailed until 1 May, extended until 1 August.

Wimborne announce trio of signings as squad preparations continue

WIMBORNE Town are putting the finishing touches to their squad with a trio of signings announced and the new season around a month away. Ex-Chile youth international Max Bustamante and South Korean midfielder Seung-Woo Yang have both signed for The Magpies, whilst the versatile Owen Roundell has also re-signed for the club. Powerful and full of pace, young forward Bustamante signs for Wimborne with three full seasons of step three football already under his belt, having been top scorer at Berkhamsted in 2023/24 and spending last season at fellow Southern Premier South side Sholing. After signing for The Magpies, Max said: 'It's a fantastic set up, with a great ground and excellent fans, when the offer came in it was a no brainer. 'I'm looking forward to playing at the Wyatt Homes Stadium again and giving my all for the supporters.' In-demand young midfielder Yang has also signed for The Magpies after an impressive end to the season at Bemerton Heath Harlequins in the Southern League Division One South. After starting off at the famed Southampton Academy, 'Sueny' joined Forest Green Rovers before continuing his development at Eastleigh where he made some National League appearances. On signing, Yang said: 'I'm really excited to be joining Wimborne. I can't wait to get going and play in front of the fans which I know are great. 'I believe I can help the team achieve our goals this season and I feel ready and better than ever.' Wimborne have also announced that Owen Roundell, who can play as a centre back or as a defensive midfielder, has re-signed for the club. After joining the club back in January, Roundell was virtually an ever-present during the record-breaking unbeaten run that propelled The Magpies to their highest ever finish of tenth. Manager Tim Sills said: 'Owen is one of those core members who did so well at the back end of last season so it's great to have him back with us.' The trio were involved on Thursday night as Wimborne got pre-season underway, retaining the annual Gerry Page Trophy with a 2-1 win over Christchurch.

Swindon youngster heads out on loan to Non-League outfit

Swindon Town goalkeeper Redman Evans will spend the next four months in Non-League after he agreed a loan move to Alvechurch. As pre-season looks to get underway, Evans will get the chance to get his feet under the table and begin next season with Alvechurch in the Southern League Premier Central Division after a four-month loan deal was agreed. Advertisement Swindon have been swift in assembling their goalkeeping department, with Lewis Ward arriving as an experienced back-up for Connor Ripley, who agreed to stay on for another two seasons when signing his new contract after being hugely impressive in the second half of last term. These moves have allowed Swindon to send Evans on loan as he enters the final year of his first professional contract to continue his development by playing regular football, as opposed to backing up Ripley. He's worked hard over the past year and shown real promise. 'A loan spell at Alvechurch will give him the chance to develop his game further, adapt to senior football, and return to us stronger. We'll be monitoring his progress closely throughout.' Evans was a standout performer in Town's run to the FA Youth Cup quarter-finals in 2023/24, hugely impressing staff with his development that season both as a player and as a character over the course of the campaign. This earned him a professional contract, alongside Joel McGregor, Jaxon Brown, and Sonny Hart, and last year he played at Westbury United and Hungerford Town on loan, becoming a firm favourite at both clubs. Advertisement Although he remains in step three at the start of his loan, it will give him the opportunity to continue playing regular football and hopefully continue to progress up the pyramid. The move will also see him play under former England goalkeeper Tim Flowers, who is the manager at Alvechurch, who are also the club that produced Jacob Wakeling. Swindon have been swift in trying to secure opportunities for their young players this summer. Hart went on trial with a Non-League side after his impressive spell at Farnborough last season, although he has been in training with Town this week, so it is unclear whether that loan will materialise. Brown, Dylan Mitchell, Ant McCormick, George Alston, and Dani Gonzalez have all also been part of the first-team squad so far, but are all likely to be given the chance to go out for more regular playing time this season.
