Royals reign after close-fought match

The top-of-the-table clash in the Women's South Island League between Dunedin City Royals and Otago University was a close-fought battle. But the Royals came out on top courtesy of Amy Hislop's goal in the 18th minute to secure a 1-0 victory. After a period of sustained early pressure, University were unable to clear and an attempted headed clearance landed at Hislop's feet two yards out to finish. The Royals continued to have most of the possession in the first half and the game saw some robust challenges with the students' Ella Morgan having to be carried off before halftime. The second half was more of an even affair with both teams doing extremely well to stop shots and cancelling each other out. The win puts the Royals on 21 points and University remain in second on 18 points. Roslyn Wakari made the long trip up to Nelson and took a 15th-minute lead through Zara Pratley. But Nelson replied with two goals in three minutes to lead 2-1 before the break to win. In the Southern League, the Royals' men travelled to Selwyn and were rewarded with a 5-2 win. It looked promising for the Royals early on when Brady Jacobs had a ninth minute shot that struck the post. But Selwyn played the ball through the middle and Finlay Cottoem struck from the edge of the box. The home side doubled their lead when Luke Mackay scored from the penalty spot on 31 minutes. Jacobs fired home a volley in the 33rd minute and the Royals very nearly equalised just before halftime. The equaliser eventually came 17 minutes from time when Max Davidson rifled home from the edge of the box. Charlie Fawcett, who was introduced as a substitute only two minutes earlier, was on hand to benefit from the Selwyn keeper spilling the ball. Fellow substitute Cato Williams found himself unmarked in the penalty box and he made no mistake striking home a well-directed cross from the left flank in the 89th minute. Jacobs scored the goal of the game in the sixth minute of injury time, cutting in from the left wing and unleashing an unstoppable shot from outside the penalty box . The Royals move into third-equal on in a very congested table with five teams on 13 points. After last week's heartache of conceding a late goal to lose in Nelson , Wānaka again succumbed to a late goal to lose at home 2-1 to Ferrymead Bays. Anthony Sprowson pulled the home side level with a 22nd minute equaliser. However, Bays Kasper Marson scored the winner with seven minutes left. Nomads upset Nelson 3-0 and Cashmere Tech won 8-4 against Universities of Canterbury. • Queens Park grabbed local bragging rights winning 2-1 against Old Boys in the Southern Premiership Invercargill darby. Queens Park took the lead in first half stoppage time when Cameron Johnson fired home from close range. Old Boys equalised with nine minutes remaining when a long ball forward caused Queens Park keeper Jayden Castle to come out of his box and with Old Boys pouring forward they regained possession, having their initial shot blocked on the line however Jayden Dawson was on hand to score. In the fifth minute of stoppage time Anton Fitzgerald secured the win. Northern continued their 100% record claiming their sixth consecutive victory with a 3-0 win against Northern Hearts. Rory Hibbert scored a brace in the first half and claimed his second consecutive hat-trick when he scored early in the second. Green Island upset Roslyn 3-1 at Ellis Park to claim their first win of the season. The home side started slow with Green Island looking to press and hassle. The tactic worked when they took the lead through Seb Smith. Roslyn equalised midway through the first half when Joe Wood pounced on the loose ball following a corner. Green Island took the lead on 66 minutes through Harrison Mclean's penalty and Ryan Walker secured the win when Roslyn failed to clear and he tapped home from close range. Mosgiel benefited from Roslyn's slip and moved into third place on the table with a comprehensive 6-0 win against the Royals. It was 3-0 at the break thanks to goals from Harvey Stephens, Reece Butenshaw and Morgan Day. Three goals in four minutes in the second half did the damage for the Plainsmen with Stephens claiming his hat-trick and Kowin Hancock getting the goal his all round play deserved.

Royals in 1-0 loss after goal ruled out

After Southern League powerhouses Cashmere Technical and Coastal Spirit dropped points on Friday, the Dunedin City Royals had an opportunity to move up the congested table on Saturday. They came up against Universities of Canterbury away and gave away possession in the middle in the 11th minute. The home side's cross found Pero Forman unmarked in the penalty box to finish — and record a 1-0 victory against the Royals. The Royals thought they had forced an equaliser in the 85th minute only for this to be ruled out and despite eight minutes of time added on the Royals would not be able to find a way through. The loss left the Royals on 10 points and fourth equal. Wānaka made the long trip up to Nelson and thanks to keeper Josh Shackleton's heroics it looked like the Central Otago side would come away with a share of the points. He denied Nelson twice early, but was helpless to stop Lennon Whewell's 29th-minute opener. Shackleton again pulled off a couple of stunning saves early in the second half and Wānaka equalised on the hour mark when Ed Belingher ghosted in unmarked at the far post to score from close range. Heading into injury time, it looked like Wanaka would secure a draw but Whewell beat a couple of defenders and shot across goal to secure a 2-1 win. Frontrunners Christchurch United had a 2-1 win against Cashmere, Ferrymead Bays beat Coastal 3-1 and Nomads United had a 2-1 win against Selwyn United. Men's Southern Premiership In the men's Southern Premiership, University looked to claim their fifth consecutive victory when they went 2-0 up over Roslyn at Ellis Park after only 23 minutes. The students had the better share of possession and led through goals to Blake Allison and former Roslyn player Simba Muwunganirwa. University stretched Roslyn and should have added to their tally but paid for their missed chances. Roslyn were more structured in the second half with some slick touch passing resulting in Hamish Mair being on the end of a cross at 58 minutes. Roslyn's Jack McFarlane found himself in space on the left, dribbled into the box and calmly passed it into the net for the equaliser. McFarlane then turned creator, curling a right-sided free kick into the path of substitute Ben Williams-Davies who scored an 88th-minute goal for a 3-2 win. Northern steamrolled Old Boys 8-1 in Invercargill. Nicholas Brett scored a first-half hat-trick. William Fleming's 29th-minute strike gave Old Boys some hope, but Rory Hibbert also scored a hat-trick and Toby Orchiston a brace to leave Northern top of the table on 15 points. Queens Park and Royals had an entertaining 2-2 draw. The Royals had a halftime lead, following a passage that involved 13 passes. It was crossed into the box and found Charlie Fawcett, who bent his right-footed shot perfectly past the outstretched hand of the keeper into the top corner. Queens Park equalised on the hour mark when Tom Kent's long-range free kick found Rodrigo Schmidt De Camargo in the penalty box. Queens Park took the lead when Anton Fitzgerald planted a far-post header into the back of the net. The Royals claimed a share of the points when skipper George Barker equalised with the 77th-minute penalty. In the battle at Sunnyvale, Mosgiel beat Green Island 2-1. Green Island took a 46th-minute lead through Finley Kruger. The Plainsmen responded when Luke Clissold showed great technique to volley home the equaliser and Mosgiel claimed three points when Patrick Koppert headed home an in-swinging corner on 65 minutes. In the women's South Island league, the Royals thumped Nelson Suburbs 8-0 at Logan Park. Amy Hislop claimed a hat-trick — leading the golden-boot race with a total of eight goals — and Raegan Potter bagged a brace. Hannah Mackay-Wright's goal made it 4-0 at halftime. Toni Power made it 7-0 on 65 minutes and substitute Georgia Kennedy rounded out. Roslyn Wakari moved up the table with a 2-1 victory in Kaiapoi over NW United. Zara Pratley's opener on 15 minutes was cancelled out when NW equalised 10 minutes before the break. However, Catriona Galvin scored the winner on 56 minutes to move Roslyn to fourth. Otago University held on for a 3-2 win against Universities of Canterbury at Logan Park yesterday. By Neville Watson

Friendly atmosphere the key to club's award-winning away days

By Phil Campbell Falmouth Town had the honour of picking up the prestigious FSA Away Day Experience of the Year award at the National Game Awards in association with Isuzu. The Pitching In Southern League Division One South outfit, who finished ninth in the table last term, earned acclaim for its outstanding efforts in hosting travelling fans from across the country. The criteria for the award looked at a variety of different elements, including the warmth of a welcome, the atmosphere, the view of the game, the refreshments on offer and the facilities available, with Falmouth Town coming up trumps. And Football Supporters Association (FSA) Network Manager for Community Owned Clubs Richard Irving explained just what set Falmouth apart, saying: 'It was very much about the atmosphere on the day. 'The welcome was particularly noted as being of a very friendly nature, and just the all-round way that the club is set up and is functioning now, seemed to appeal to a lot of our fans. 'Obviously, for many of them, it is a long way to go but clearly when they have got there, they have had a real welcome and a really good experience.' Part of the process in selecting the winner involved the FSA canvassing members to garner their views on what their best away day experience was, and Irving believes that Falmouth, famous for their group of passionate supporters called F Troop, have set the standard for other clubs to try and emulate. 'There are many things that we could point to that Falmouth has done that appear to have appealed to people,' he continued. 'I think it is incumbent upon us to highlight those things and show what can be done. 'Many of our clubs, and there were a very large number nominated, do a really good job of providing a welcome to away fans, but this year, it is certainly Falmouth that have come out on top.' The National Game Awards is a celebration of the non-league season - highlighting the community, fans, on-field, and off-field successes of the game outside of the English Football League. The ceremony is held each year by the Non-League Paper, the UK's number one selling football title and the best place for your non-league news, with this year's event held at Plough Lane - home of AFC Wimbledon.

Angels prospect George Klassen is improving after apparently getting hit in head by line drive

Associated Press SAN DIEGO (AP) — Right-hander George Klassen, one of the Los Angeles Angels' top prospects, is improving one day after he was apparently hit in the head by a line drive. Klassen was injured Sunday while pitching for the Double-A Rocket City Trash Pandas. The liner appeared to hit him in the head, leaving him flat on his back on the mound during the fourth inning of a Southern League game against Montgomery. Klassen needed help to get off the field from his manager and athletic trainer. He was still undergoing further testing Monday, but the team said Klassen was awake and alert, and his condition was improving. Manager Ron Washington said he didn't have an update Monday before the Angels opened their series with the San Diego Padres. Klassen is one of the most promising players in the Angels' perpetually low-rated farm system. The Halos acquired the 23-year-old last summer when they traded closer Carlos Estévez to Philadelphia, which drafted Klassen in the sixth round in 2023. Klassen is 1-3 with a 4.97 ERA for Rocket City, striking out 36 over 29 innings. ___ AP MLB: recommended
